Convicted Securities fraud Martin "Pharmabro" Shkreli, awaiting sentence, has lost his bail privileges and been sent to a federal prison in Brooklyn after soliciting an assault on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He offered $5000 to anybody who would procure a sample of Clinton's hair, with the follicle attached, during her book tour.
In defence, his hapless attorney was reduced to comparing Shkreli's conduct to satire.
"He did not hold up the severed head of the president of the United States like Kathy Griffin."
Griffin has attracted widespread censure after posing for a tasteless photograph in which she held up a prop that resembled a severed head of the President. She later apologized, but the stunt has made her somewhat radioactive.
The judge in the Shkreli case was not impressed by the attorney's argument. "This is a solicitation of assault. That is not protected by the First Amendment.
So off he goes.
