A man has been killed by a hippopotamus at a Naivasha hotel where he was on holiday.

According to residents who live near the hotel, the animal trampled on the Chinese man on Sunday night.

They said the hippo emerged from Lake Naivasha, which is next to the hotel, and attacked the tourist who was taking a walk in the compound.

The animal charged toward him, tossed him to the ground and eventually trampled him to death.

Naivasha deputy police boss Paul Mengich confirmed the incident and urged tourists to avoid going near the lake saying water levels have risen and wild animals could be lurking anywhere.

My worst fear. :(

I'm sure this happens often. It's not like the hippo was hungry and ate him.

Reminds me of that Cracked article:

Cracked said:
Hippos are practically the very definition of Disney-cute. What sort of person could look at this big ol' rascal, playing away in her favorite swimming hole, and not think of stuffing her in a tutu and making her dance to classical music?
For chrissake look at them. There is no way you could look at a big, fat, happy, squishy, huggable hippo and not think, "If she could talk like a human, she would sound just like Jada Pinkett Smith and be oh so sassy." You would totally name her Sassybaskets and she would be your tutu-wearing, ballet-dancing, strut-walking pal for life. Just you and Sassybaskets against the world! Look out, New York, here comes Sassybaskets!

OH SHIT! RUN!

It turns out in the real world, hippos fucking kill people.
There's this word, "territorial," that nature takes pretty seriously. When it's applied to a two-ton animal with teeth the size of bowling pins, that is one hell of a word. The sort of word you either pay very close attention to, or ignore and end up with a complimentary "Killed to death by a fucking hippo" tombstone. That sort of thing is really embarrassing for the family, you know?
The next time you settle in for a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos, take a moment to to reflect on the small fact that hippopotamuses kill more humans per year than any other animal in the entire continent of Africa. Only elephants are consistently larger than hippos, and only the Warner Brothers' Tasmanian Devil is more consistently aggressive.

Perhaps you've seen this pic:

That is not in fact a man and a hippo doing a live reenactment of a cartoon they saw. That's an experienced park ranger, who narrowly avoided getting killed by a hippo by sprinting over a hundred yards.
The late Steve Irwin, a man who used to tackle 12-foot crocodiles for fun and wave angry snakes filled with kill-you-before-your-next-heartbeat poison at a camera, considered a five-minute sequence where his camera team had to cross a river filled with hippos to be the single most dangerous moment ever filmed on his show.
The man who toyed with crocodiles, was scared shitless of hippos.

They're mean.

But the one at the San Diego Zoo is awesome. It flirts with all the girls and hams it up for the camera.

And now for a sad twist...

A Chinese tourist has been killed by a hippopotamus near Lake Naivasha in Kenya's Great Riff Valley, medics said on Monday.

The woman, said to be in her 30s, was attacked by a hippo mother after trying to take photos of a baby hippo, the Standard newspaper reported.

Wildlife officials shot the mother hippo dead after the incident which took place at a country club near a nature reserve.

edit: Wait, this article say it was a woman, the article in the OP talks about a man?

edit2: Another article..

The woman in her 30’s was attacked by the lactating hippo mother which crushed her and she died on the way to hospital.

The incident occurred at Lake Naivasha Country Club five kilometres from Naivasha town.

Kenya Wildlife Service officers moved in and shot dead the wild animal.

The tourist was allegedly trying to take pictures of a young hippo when the mother attacked her.

According to the warden in charge Hellsgate National park Osman Ibrahim, the victim left her room at around 9pm after spotting the young hippo.

“The information we have is that the Chinese tourist started taking pictures of the young hippo and she was attacked by the mother,” he said.

“She was seriously injured on the waist and neck and was rushed to a nearby private hospital where she was pronounced dead,” he said.

The Jungle Cruise at Disneyland taught me to fear hippos when I was a kid.

"They're only dangerous when they wiggle their ears!" *takes out gun: bang, bang, bang!

Would that be an accidental trample, or a prolonged intentional trample whilst being killed by a hippo?

Hippo's don't look particularly aggressive creatures, maybe it was just trying to be friendly.

When I was in an African village in Togo named Aveve, I asked if there's any animals in the village. They responded by saying there's usually Hippos near the water. I said great lets go. Yet in my mind I was making sure all the slower people are in front of me :)! They also said one killed a villager the week prior.

why did the hippo do it ? he must have had a reason
Nature gonna nature. Wild animals can be territorial, and especially protective of their young. Sometimes, it's just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The tourist taking pictures of the baby hippo did not help.

Yeah, not surprising, Im actually pretty sure as far as number of deaths go hippos are the most dangerous animal in africs

AHAHAHA then looks are deceiving. They are absurdly territorial and absurdly deadly.

My first reaction to the thread title was, "Why would you say, 'shocked?' Hippos being deadly is well-established."

As soon as I read Chinese tourist I knew she was probably trying to get way too close.

Last summer a whole bunch of Chinese tourists were caught feeding a baby grizzly near a national park here. They threw a sandwich at it just to get some pictures. And that is a huge no-no around here as it makes them come closer to towns.

Some tourists are really ignorant to be honest.
