Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Surely play how you like, but the more serious fans of the genre will be serious about comparing scores and such. The lack of faithful reproduction of the original games breaks this aspect of the genre. Slowdown or lack thereof has a large impact on difficulty.

Not directing at you in particular, but was meaning to post something along these lines and this is as good a place as any.

Do serious fans even mix scores on different platforms? I can't imagine they would lump the 360/PCB/PC scores together. Just a question.

And as an aside. I've really been digging the original Darius game on the PSVR. Works extremely well...even having to turn your head slightly because the super wide image is so big. Lotsa fun and try it if you have the setup! Have not tried Burst on it yet.

I had my first 1CC run in a shooting game EVER yesterday. :) Ok, DDP:Resurrection Novice mode but still. :D Had two ships left in the end. Feels good man!

Edit: also thanks for the discussion, guys! I'll comment on that later.

Awesome! Congrats! I CC'd DDPR as well - great game.

And, we should specify: Crimzon Clover is a gem :3
they're all gems :)

I'm talking more along the lines of established companies. Those developers don't have a catalog of games to look back on and nit pick. I was more referring to if CAVE were to move ahead and develop something new. Which I wish they would so that people would stop trying to compare their ports. It would just be nice for them to have a new game come out and have the game get judged on its actual mechanics and gameplay rather than how perfect the slow down is matched up to from old pieces of hardware.
therein lies the problem. if you stick to threads about these ports from established companies, you're going to see walls of complaints since there really isn't anything new to discuss. In regards to new output from CAVE, I'm with you and desire that as well. But if you're looking for a fresh experience, you have to dig a little deeper.for fans of the genre, the true gems have been the doujin/indie output.

Also, cave lost a lot of staff to M2, and while I can trust that they're still capable, I'm a bit more interested in seeing where ubusana goes.

Honestly I didn't noticed big issues, only small slowdowns (drop from 60 to 59/58 fps) in both games buy only in few sectors with A LOT of enemies on screen. I play on Intel HD graphics so maybe some of the other issues are related to Nvidia/AMD drivers, I don't know.
I'd say that these are good ports and Degica is working hard with its patches.

I simply don't I understand the hate coming from Shmup11 forum, huh. :/

Is the MAME Cave driver more faithfull to the arcade original?

looks like first footage from tanoshimasu (ex-cave members) and their mobile shmup aki to blue is up on youtube

not on a gamest arcadia level, but some leader boards don't even differentiate the platform: e.g. muchi muchi pork 1.00 and progear. then you look at something like deathsmiles..and yeah..

jealous about the darius VR

it's like crack...don't get too addicted ;)

not for cv1000 sh3 games like daifukkatsu and mushihimesama. steam release for sure on that end. even for non-sh3 upcoming releases like dangun feveron, although MAME is very accessible..you can bet that the ps4 release should be extremely authentic since M2 are gods. for battle garegga ps4, it even has the pcb stage 2 graphics glitch after the flamingos which has no relevance to the actual gameplay. talk about authentic :D

Ubusana might make me buy a PS4 if it doesn't get a PC release.

Wow! This actually looks pretty good. Is this for both iOS and Android? The video says something about it running on Windows.

I've never actually seen most Cave games in real life, so my only reference is MAME and some IPad versions.

From playing MAME recently, these games seem to run beautifully. With CRT emulation everything looks pretty amazing too. Hook up an arcade stick and I'm not sure how things could be much better, aside from having the actual cabinets and PCBs.

What exactly is wrong with Cave games on MAME? Are there specific glitches or issues? I haven't noticed any, but then again as I said, I don't have much point of reference to judge from.

I think we're all hoping ubusana is our savior - at least in terms of bigger budget releases. not sure about mobile platforms for aki to blue tbh.

admittedly, I'm not the most knowledgeable in MAME configs, but SH-3 games... while supported, are very spotty and aren't accurate in game speed. pre-SH-3 games run flawlessly and can be configured to match PCBs almost identically. I play progear in MAME and I am hard pressed to find any differences between MAME and my PCB.

CAVE 68000 games such as dodonpachi, donpachi, esp ra.de., guwange, dangun feveron and even games like ketsui, dodonpachi daioujou, espgaluda, and progear are pretty spot on. on the other hand, games like mushihimesama, ibara, espgaluda II, pink sweets, futari, mmp, etc are games that have speed issues. maybe that's been fixed? if it works for you stick with it!

The SH3 games (Mushihimesama and beyond) in MAME don't have accurate slowdown. Lots of people were noticing and pointing this out when the emulation was introduced (and removed and reintroduced etc). I also remember hearing EOJ say that the first-gen hardware games (DonPachi through Guwange) aren't totally accurate speed-wise, either, but I haven't heard as much talk about those in general.

Accurate slowdown is hard as hell, lol. And unfortunately it's a big deal when Cave tweaks their difficulty curves around it, regardless of whether you're interested in comparing scores or not.

How are you playing original Darius? Is it included with Burst?

Ah, I see.

Well, for me as a relatively casual player that doesn't phase me much. So basically what I'm playing may be slightly harder because slowdowns don't occur as much. For people who play these games religiously then it's great to have more accurate versions on Steam.

we'll you're just lucky (and I'd want your setup) because they chug/run atrociously on my setup. I'd even take inaccurate slowdown gladly (for free) over the performance I get T-T

Yeah, it's a new PC. 6700k, n1080 etc. Haven't had a true gaming caliber PC in over a decade so it's really fun to have.

When are Dangun Feveron and BG coming out on PS4 exactly? For the latter there's only a JPN release date set in stone where physical is exclusive to the LE afaik?
As for Ubusana, did we hear anything about it at all after the announcement which was almost 2 and 1/2 years ago? Videos or any date known?

Dangun is early next year, nothing more concrete than that.

Ubusana is still just a name on a dude's blog.

This gets said a lot but I haven't found any evidence to suggest it's true and I'm quite sure the "mass exodus" people talk about was related to Tanoshimasu which is, like, three dudes.
well hopefully that's the case. with the current state of cave I have more anticipation for M2 releases

speaking of cave, I'm still working on a muchi muchi pork clear and can now get to the stage 5 mid boss with 80 mil :)

Went back and played FINAL BOSS again after seeing their new update video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diRGfxfCsdI

There is nothing out there in the recent years that comes close to the amount of love that's been injected into this game. When it's officially released it will probably easily win shmup of the year for that year and I'll even go as far to say as it being regarded as one of the greatest of all time. The game has amazing situational weaponry use, fun ways to offer bonus point opportunities, awesome ways to discover secrets for end of stage bonus points, great enemy pattern layouts that offers difficulty without blanketing the screen with bullets, amazing stage lay outs, bosses that have awesome mechanics, and that's not even getting into what comes after 1cc'ing it.

Really hope these 2 guys get the recognition they deserve when they finish the game.

Unfortunately for me I've always been a bit of a gfx whore regarding shmups, if great mechanics aren't married with lush pixel art (basically any arcade shmup of the last 25+ years, most output from the 16-bit consoles and great indies like CC:WI, Jamestown etc) or nice to look at 3D (think Ikaruga, Under Defeat, Gradius V, Raiden IV) the genre loses much of its appeal to me :(

Final Boss looks like a supercharged NES game and that has no visual appeal for me, even tho I absolutely adore platformers like Shovel Knight that doesn't translate as well to shmups as far as I'm concerned

Oh wow, nice. That's an insta-buy right there. Thanks, not sure how I missed this was coming. Is it a good port? Any scan line options?

Amazing port. Up there with the M2 stuff. Insanely good with scanline option (though not really needed) and tons of other minuscule oprions like adjusting the individual screens. The japanese menu is a pick thick because it is so detailed do I'm waiting for the western release as well.

Yeah to each their own. Me personally I think the animations for the bosses and their attacks just look fantastic. Each ship has their own unique tweak on each of the specific weapons and mechs that they can transform into. Just the amount of time they've taken to animate the things they've done in their game is an amazing feat. Now they are currently updating animations on place holder assets and the game is starting to look even better.

Hopefully most people find the game attractive or can look past the monochromatic color palette to enjoy what I think is the deepest shmup to have been developed in recent years.

I really they would start some kind of crowdfund to help them finish the game.

On another note... Is there anywhere to get great prints of shoot'em up artwork? I want to buy canvas prints so I can decorate my room them.

As I said, not really knowing the differences to the orignal arcade versions I enjoy the heck out of...

• DDP:Rressurection (Normal 1.5, also the fun Arrange (ver. L))

• Mushihimesama (mostly Arrange, Normal, 1.5. ...well, all of them, really. I can't decide which mode to practise, haha! I still really don't get the scoring systems, though)

Mushi's sequel Futari is kinda awesome and so is Espgaluda II, both of which I tried on mame. They look beautiful and feel fresh to me. I hope they release those two games next because I don't really like the feeling of playing with less than optimal emulation settings. Instabuy!

What Cave game should Degica release next (while patching the others ;) ) ?

I'm still hoping for Muchi Muchi Pork. Not very optimistic given its theme and lack of appeal compared to other Cave games, but I really want to play it and the console port is way too expensive.

I'd like to see Dangun Feveron on PC too.

It is a fan favorite though. And the port from 360 could certainly use a little fixing up. I vote for this twofer as well. And would be nice to have the Pink Sweets included even though it is less popular.

Personally still waiting for a port of the phone Dodonpachi Maximum. One can dream though.

Muchi Muchi Pork looks crazy! So colorful and frantic :O The character design is a bit strange but it has a certain appeal for sure.

it's top notch. I really liked it before, but after spending a few weeks-month trying to get to 2nd loop, it's really grown on me. yagawa medal chaining which is straight forward but fun with a great lard shot-to-medal chaining system (although regular shot will sporadically trigger a medal which keeps you vigilant). great level design that constantly keeps you engaged with different scoring opportunities at hand. a rank system that doesn't really have any impact on your game (other than boss milking) which is refreshing for a yagawa game.

very light-hearted theme about fat girls riding air bikes to lose weight and collecting lard from floating piggies. some of the bosses have badass names like major sirloin and general porkfilet. even the soundtrack is hilariously lighthearted.

I love it so much... I was even considering trading my battle garegga board for muchi muchi pork but I'd have to toss a little extra on top to make that happen.

Can somebody summarize the plot of Muchi Muchi Pork? "Fat" girls riding bikes but why? What happened? :D

Well, this is a story, all about how...

The story involves a trio of females from Butazuka City who have been transformed into pig-girls by the evil General Pork Fillet, who comes from the far away planet of Iberiko (a reference to the Iberian peninsula, where Spain is located, also known as a country so obsessed with pork products that it actually has a famous restaurant called "Museum of Ham".) The pig-girls fly via bikes (called "ketta machines", which derives from the word for bicycle in the Nagoyan dialect), which are powered by pedaling (to lose weight, one might surmise?).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Makes sense! Sounds pretty epic to me. I'm listening to the STG weekly episode on this game, trying to understand the scoring system a bit. I love that there is such a thing as a lard attack.

it's the best part of the game as it keeps you engaged and on your toes at all times - switching between rapid fire and lard shot to collect lard and medal chain and using bombs at certain points for huge scoring potential.

button A - rapid fire
button B - lard attack if you have built up lard, otherwise a small single stream rapid fire attack
button C - bomb

you basically just use rapid fire button A to spawn piggies that you collect for lard, and then you can destroy enemies with the button B lard attack to turn them into medals. you build up your medal value from 100 to 10,000 and anything you kill after that will drop 10,000 unless you "drop" the chain.

it gets much deeper than that (boss milking with bombs after destroying the individual parts, using small rapid fire B to spawn more piggies and then switching back to rapid fire A to collect it as lard instead of points, etc..), but that's the basics.

Is there any site/video detailing the various modes from Dodonpachi Resurrection? (Rules/Differences/Loops/Secrets) etc?

G-Sync is really wonky with most shmups I've played. I was playing Eschatos today and it was giving slowdown for no reason. Turned it off and the game ran as smooth as butter. That's my first trouble shooting step with most shmups.

BLA slowdown patch pushed today for DDPR. I'm about to check it out.

Edit: I don't know what the OG BLA played like, but the STEAM version is definitely a lot faster thank what it was before. Way more intense.

finally 1-alled much much pork ending at a 2-2 run :)

bVs8mvz.jpg

good news on the ddp dfk port too. I know a lot of people were looking forward to that.

thanks :)
spent the better part of a month on it. I found that the best strat for me was having enough resources going into the 4th boss was clutch because you can easily get 3 or more lives on stage 5, and then once I made it to the stage 5 boss 6-7 times I knew it was go time

it makes me want to get a board :P
