Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I'll be looking out for a PS2 to Switch converter personally as I love playing shmups and other retro games with my PS2 Saturn pad.

Well, I can tell you I emailed Brook a week ago (they make all kinds of converters) and they said they will look at making converters for Switch. :-) PS2 converters, though, not sure since there might not be enough demand. But 360/PS3/XB1/PS4 etc., probably.

I recently decided to play some shmups I've owned via compilation releases on PC and PSN, here are my quick impressions-

Ninja Commando

OK calling this a shmup may seem weird but if you look at gameplay of it, it does contain elements of shmups.

While the gameplay was unforgiving, I really liked its visual style. Bosses that block your shots are a neat twist too.

Twinkle Star Sprites

This game is deserving of its praise, while I didn't have anyone to play against I really liked the cutesy aesthetic of it and the gameplay concept is pretty neat.

1941
So hey a shmup with a lifebar from the late 80s/early 90s! I liked how simple this game was and it was short enough for me to play through it and beat it.

Game good too much for me in later stages but I still enjoyed it. the team did an amazing job with the visuals and graphics. Dat final boss doe...

Forgotten/Lost Worlds

The game's Engrish is entertaining and I quite enjoyed this weird trip. Seriously forget mature surrealism, gimme more of this wacky mish mash of cultures. I liked the upgrade system and the store randomly popping up for you to power up to blow stuff more easily.

Mystic Riders
Irem's Mystic Riders was pretty neat but I don't see the purpose behind the fire power up when Electricity is the better option. The upgrade system is a nice addition and the penalty for dying having you go down to Lvl. 2 is some good anti-frustration features.
Broom attack is too OP though.

Air Duel

Eh...pretty drab colors but the visual style they were going for is commended IMO. Prettyr un of the mill otherwise.

In the Hunt
I didn't like that you couldn't shoot stuff behind you mainly because the movement in this game is rather limited. I also didn't understand who power ups worked esp. with so few of them offered to you throughout the stage.
Granted it's silly to compain about the shooting thing I mentioned this being a shmup and all, but I gues sit's cuz I played Gunforce 1 and 2 before it that rubbed off on me :P
While the visuals are impressive, I feel like the game could've been better.

Nice yeah I already own their PS2 to PS4 converter and it works flawlessly once I updated it's firmware. I'd be fine with either 360 or PS4 as I have an arcade stick that supports both of those. Either way I will wait until some more 2D or shmups get announced for the system before dropping more money on converters.

i have in the hunt! (i think i posted my copy on here) rich sprites like metal slug =)

forgotten worlds had those cool cameos from sidearms and 1943

is it me or does the last year or two feel like a particularly (if not historically) bad time to pick up classic SHMUPs for a lot of systems? feels like that genre got hit in nearly every scene, to varying degrees

I'm kinda shocked at the Saturn shmup prices in the last year. I still have not completed the collection. And last time I was in Tokyo prices had gotten a bit silly. Wound up only getting one new disc: Thunder Force Gold 2.

well, at least you got one of the greats! what all do you have left to get, saturn wise?

I just collect the shmups. Only about ten left but still a couple of pricey ones in there:

Cotton Boomarang
Parodius Da!
Sexy Parodius
Konkani Antiques Collection
Detana Twinbee
Image Fight/X-Multiply
Bokun to Ippatsu!
Dezaemon
Sol Divide
Terra Cresta
Planet Joker

A lot of stickers in there. But a few pricey ones. Nothing too bad but the prices have gotten a bit out of hand. Luckily I bought all the others years ago.

Also need that Keio Flying Squadron. I'm guesssing that is a shmup as well.

The Steam version could really do with a manual, I have no idea what's going on.

not really a fan of DU3 myself. true mode is the best as it feels most natural and easiest to use the ingame mechanics/system, but after spending a couple hours yesterday I realized I wasn't having fun with the scoring mechanics... which is odd because I find grazing & scoring in psyvariar 2: the will to fabricate to be a blast. just not a fan of sitting at the bottom of the screen during the entire stage(s) with no real reason to play aggressively. also not sure why it felt so weird, but having to hold down laser to collect scoring items instead of shot seemed unnatural. after killing a big enemies with laser instinctively I would want to use shot to absorb scoring items while taking out the popcorn enemies but I was forced to hit laser again to collect points that spawned. I know that kind of defeats the purpose of playing slowly to allow enemies to spawn more bullets, but it almost feels as if shot doesn't have much of a point outside of moving a bit more quickly out of a pinch. aesthetically a very pretty game but not for me :(

If you guys have nothing to do on Saturday, we're having a shmups meet at my place (Maryland) and will likely be attempting to stream while we're at it. This should be a fun time! We usually aim to start the meet around 1 PM, but it may take a bit after that to set up any streaming equipment. I will probably use my PS4's internal streaming at a minimum though!

nice! what games you guys planning on playing?

I'm getting super stoked for the Chicago meet in June even tho it's still 3 months away D:

Awe, been a few years since I left. Missed many of these. I'm assuming this is in the new place and not the old basement?

An expanded version of Sine Mora coming to PC, PS4, & Xbox.

http://gematsu.com/2017/03/sine-mora-ex-announced-ps4-xbox-one-pc

I really quite like Sine Mora, it had three major issues holding it back: popcorn enemies took too long to kill, invisible bullets, and powerups were essential but didn't bounce off the edges when you died. Fix those and it would be a great game. Still enjoyable, though.

that said, i can't see myself buying it again. it's on my 360 if i ever feel like playing it again.

I would only buy this if they removed that horrible time limit garbage. Dying if you run out of time is really crap in a shooter. I don't care if its trying anything new.

I tried DU2. I stopped because I'd get an epileptic seizure. Too many fx to handle

I bought again Caladrius Blaze and I can confirm: now it works with Intel GPUs.

Maybe this will help some Gaffers used to play games on their notebooks, the game works fine now ^^

(Patch 1.01)

Getting back to the streams above. No bullet coloring on Garegga. Braver than I!

Looks like it was a good time.

Most of the people there were coming off playing the PCB or the Saturn port, so that's what they were used to. One of the PCB owners actually mentioned that they had not been playing the PCB at all because the port is that good, and the savestate feature is useful.

Trust me, very little of what was streamed was actually me playing, lol

More photos by the way:

Bullet Soul (PC) review copies are going out and there isn't an embargo.

The port seems really solid. I played through every mode and haven't run into any issues.

Super LTTP but this weekend I became full on addicted to R-Type for the first time. Always thought the art looked cool and thought hell, I'll finish up some of my Wii U library with a great arcade game, this looks interesting....

AMAZING. The art, music, and weapons are sooo coooool. Very rad.

How is resolution support? Is it like Caladrius where they upscale 720p?

Haven't played Caladrius.

There aren't any resolution options. Fullscreen sets the monitor to 720P. I'm guessing that was the resolution of the 360 version (haven't played it).

Like the Cave ports, the game-screen can be moved/stretched/flipped if need be.

Glad I popped in here, I see Caladrius is still on sale until 3/22 on PS4. Was just looking at it in Steam where I have other stuff like recently purchased Darius, Raiden IV, etc but maybe PS4 on this one.
