I recently decided to play some shmups I've owned via compilation releases on PC and PSN, here are my quick impressions-
Ninja Commando
OK calling this a shmup may seem weird but if you look at gameplay of it, it does contain elements of shmups.
While the gameplay was unforgiving, I really liked its visual style. Bosses that block your shots are a neat twist too.
Twinkle Star Sprites
This game is deserving of its praise, while I didn't have anyone to play against I really liked the cutesy aesthetic of it and the gameplay concept is pretty neat.
1941
So hey a shmup with a lifebar from the late 80s/early 90s! I liked how simple this game was and it was short enough for me to play through it and beat it.
Blazing Star
Game good too much for me in later stages but I still enjoyed it. the team did an amazing job with the visuals and graphics. Dat final boss doe...
Forgotten/Lost Worlds
The game's Engrish is entertaining and I quite enjoyed this weird trip. Seriously forget mature surrealism, gimme more of this wacky mish mash of cultures. I liked the upgrade system and the store randomly popping up for you to power up to blow stuff more easily.
Mystic Riders
Irem's Mystic Riders was pretty neat but I don't see the purpose behind the fire power up when Electricity is the better option. The upgrade system is a nice addition and the penalty for dying having you go down to Lvl. 2 is some good anti-frustration features.
Broom attack is too OP though.
Air Duel
Eh...pretty drab colors but the visual style they were going for is commended IMO. Prettyr un of the mill otherwise.
In the Hunt
I didn't like that you couldn't shoot stuff behind you mainly because the movement in this game is rather limited. I also didn't understand who power ups worked esp. with so few of them offered to you throughout the stage.
Granted it's silly to compain about the shooting thing I mentioned this being a shmup and all, but I gues sit's cuz I played Gunforce 1 and 2 before it that rubbed off on me

While the visuals are impressive, I feel like the game could've been better.
