Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I wish Eschatos didn't have those perspective changes. I do enjoy the game with them, but I think the game would've been a lot better with fixed 2D perspective. I'm playing the game for survival only so it doesn't make me rage so badly. I think it is a good game that could've be a lot better with fixed camera.

JSS on the other hand I'm enjoying a lot.

Bummer!

Even JSS. ;-(

I like this one like I lke R-Type Delta. Good times all around and a good memory-based shooter.

It's a love/hate relationship. I'm about to turn the game on right now, lol. Eschatos Advanced mode is keeping me engaged.

JSS...there is a lot to like and if you factor in all the unlocks and stuff it's clear that Qute put a lot of time into the game. I appreciate that...it's just the problems I bring up above just get in the way too much. Really if there was just a little more room to innovate on patterns, and if there were a control scheme that, when I hit laser while holding shot, laser would fire, I would be really into these games. I just get tired of dying to stupid shit over and over again. : /

But hey you've got a real nice score on JSS Normal man! My goal is to beat Normal at some point, so I will keep trudging.

Good enough.

I logged about ten hours on the handheld over the last six months so it is fun on the 360 with an SE stick. Hard still. Shit is hot.

Love the way it logs time played...very nintendo in that respect.

I'm old-school so this one speaks to me. Lots of fun. Quick plays, for fun.

Also, accept me on PSN once it goes up. Still waiting for my PS3 Semeitsu stick to arrive from cali but I'm really digging Mamoru-PS3 so far...playing with the neo pad recently. Game is togh with a sanwa.

I actually already have that for Neo Geo Pocket, one of the first games I got when I embarked on my quest to complete the NGPC collection. Is it still worth getting the SNES one if I already have that one?
Cotton 100% is a different game than the original which got a NGP port. It's like a remix of sorts with redesigned levels and much more colorful and cutesy visuals. It's worth checking out even if you have the original.

CAVE has their own lil hooks which works for me. :)

Btw, check out my top ten shmups vid for 360 for other suggestions. All playable on US 360. Vid doesn't have any recent releases cuz I made it last year. Hope it helps.

There's a few on there I don't necessarily agree with (like Shoot1up being on the list at all, for example - that should have been Leave Home or, er, that one with the time limit whose name I can't remember right now), but YAY at Rez HD being #1 on your list.

I still have a promo copy of Rez for PS2, maybe I should dive back in.

Playing more Eschatos, got so frustrated with the main game and JS last night that I tried out Cardinal Sins tonight.

WOW, this is fun!! Short, bite-sized strategic shooting mayhem. With a doable last boss to boot.

Managed to snag most of the achievements too, since they're not dick-stompingly hard like JS lol. Anyways, CS has definitely warmed me back up to the game.

Did the handheld have Cardinal Sins or was that a separate game?

Mamoru-kun PS3 is a lot of fun, definitely try to get through the challenges if you can. They get tough, but once you learn your routes through the levels and dependable patterns to take down the bosses, you'll stabilize everything and be able to take whatever the game throws at you. Let me know if you have any questions, I platinumed it last week (despite the freeze bugs).

Speaking of freeze bugs, they generally happen in Arcade and Story mode, so be careful when using those modes. When it happens in Meikai Gekijou mode (which is rare), it tends to happen when there are a lot of stars on screen, so try to suck in stars as much as possible.

I was rocking Cardinal Sins earlier. Game is a total treat. And I discovered the sprite limit switch so it looks absolutely stunning now. Made it to what I assume is the final boss...Apocalypse or something named like that. Best fun with a score attack I've had since Final Soldier R on wiiware.

Still don't know the difference between Trial and Normal, though. (?)

Only difference I've found so far is that the final boss has one less phase on Trial, which makes it a bit easier.

It is also possible that the grading is a bit more lenient on Trial.

Ah. I see.

I made it to like half your score on normal.

Cardinal Sins was only released as a download for the Wonderwitch dev kit/blank cartridge. I've got it on a thumbdrive but I don't own a computer to transfer it. I was going to do so but then Eschatos got announced so I just shelved it all and left it in the states. Here is the actual download page:

http://members2.jcom.home.ne.jp/jss2/recycle.htm

Way cool that Eschatos is all Wonderswanny with scans of the actual cartridges, hidden Wonderwitch icons to find, etc.

Honestly, these games play quite a bit better on the 360 cause of the stick and all...though it is easier to switch shots and shield on the handheld. Handheld is pretty neat cause it is tate and super vertical.

Wow, the Wonderswan dev kit/blank cartridge...lol that's some real obscurity.

I actually still own a Wonderswan, bought one 10 years ago or whatever to play the FFs but wasn't into shooters at the time.

If you want too boost your CS score, def take a look at this Nico vid:

http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1203205

Really helped me with the scanning section.

Otomedius Excellent video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPfufTNj2Uw&feature=feedu

I like the presentation and all, but you can seriously destroy the bosses as soon as they appear (on Expert mode, no less)? What a joke.

I'll still buy it eventually though. I liked the first game well enough, but it's not something I'd put any real time into or take seriously. Just a fun diversion to blow through until you want to go back to better games.

LOL, not you too man...

I do say nay to Otomedius. The nightmare of grinding for character cards to hit 1000 in the first game was enough to permanently spoil me on the game. Odds are the sequel has something similarly free time-destroying.

Where the hell IS Otomedius X? >:(

Isn't it about time Konami remade Parodius & Fantastic Journey in HD...? :)

Yeah, I haven't bothered grinding any of the achievements (yet). I just cleared it with each character and haven't touched it since. I dunno, I just like the presentation and all of the different ships and power-ups, but since the game is piss easy and there's no scoring system to speak of, I totally get why people don't care for it.

Otomedius X is the twentieth retail shooter to appear on J-360. Kinda abirtrary but a nice little milestone!

Wondering if anybody here has gotten the recent SNK Arcade Classics 0 on PSP? Some pre-NG shooters on it I'd like to try but not sure if emulation is good.

Dear god no, that looks like a doujin game attempt at a Gradius clone. No amount of overly sensitive Yoshizaki Mine moeblobs can tempt me to play this over something like, uh, say, replaying Gradius V or Rebirth for the umpteenth time. Or Genetos, even. Or hell, how about some Crimzon Clover? That game was rad! :p

The original non-LE version was, and Cave's twitter said that it'd be the same. So yeah.
I know about the original (non-Limited Edition sku) but it was said that the Platinum release was going to be locked.
If Cave really confirmed it, then it can join Mushi Futari Platinum on my game shelf :)

Late review and all but my look at Strania is up: http://www.pwnem.com/t-strania-review
Game is great but I dunno...I'm not really a fan.

-It feels like the game could have been just one stage longer

Christ no!! lolol

Very fair review though. I like that you wrote out information about the scoring system, a lot of people don't go that far to find out where all the bonus points are coming in. I feel you took an objective look at the game and decided it wasn't for you, which is fair.

adversesolutions said:

Just sayin'

Maybe a stage that takes place on the ground, maybe even in a canyon or something to fit the nature of the game. Then again the Vower side might have something akin to that.
Then again I guess it won't matter much as an extra stage won't change my opinion of the game.

Then again and then again..Gosh I hate it when I do that.

Finally got my copy of Bullet Soul -

Wow - this game is fucking awesome! Not incredibly deep or anything, but it's mad fun - in a "blowing everything to pieces at 1000mph Raiden sort of fun".

Love everything about this game - the music, the stage designs... and maybe it's the ship designs, but i'm definitely getting Outlaw Star vibe from it.

Anyway - just wanted to make sure this game is on most people's radars - it's a REALLY good, no brains required, shooter.

Between this, Strania, Muchi Muchi Pork, Neo Witches and (soon for me) Eschatos, my VLX investment has paid off big time!

Yay! Another version of Cotton for the pile. Absolutely perfect condition too. :)

I like this one a lot. It doesn't have the awesome rock soundtrack from the Super CD version, but it's much prettier - even better than the arcade versions with a bunch of added effects, plus it's own remixed ost.

Seems a lot easier somehow though. Will have to play more.

Got to play a few hours of Otomedius X this week. Much, much, much better than the first. Just a ton of Gradius bosses for the fans...especially the end levels. Music is also quite exquisite, total fan service. And it is on the easier side which is great for a change. Altogether a great package and I'm quite pleased. Reccomended.

Good to hear, but not good for my bank balance :P Nice to see some impressions though, as I said before I'll pick this up eventually.

Yeah, kinda released at a bad time with all the great XBLA and other shooters...nobody on my friend list even has it. Truthfully, I just kinda bought it out of obligation (since I have the Hyperstick) but I was plenty surprised how much better it is than the first, and will be putting some hours into it. I'd place it somewhere in the middle of the 360 shooter catalog. I'm sure it will get a platinum/budget US release and more folks will pick it up.

Does it use the touch pad on the Hyperstick?
It is supposed to...my stick is in california though. But, the same cursor exists in this game so I assume you can still touch with the touchpad and also the second stick on the 360 pad like the first game...have not tried a pad yet.

Damn. Sp00ky was streaming Gradius V last night and now I have the urge to replay it. Unfortunately I have the NA version and my JPS2 is hooked up while my American PS2 is packed away :(

Any word on the localization for Oto-X?

A little after the Japanese release, Konami finally acknowledged that this game does indeed have an American release coming. A good number of sites changed their dates to 6/28/11.

Konami Otomedius PR

Konami USA Otomedius Excellent Website (as barebones as it is)

@Yes Boss!: I went one step further and pre-ordered the 2nd Limited Edition Pack (the one without the $400 chair) & the Otomedius G OST. Especially since I got the stick the last time, so I was like "What the heck, I'm a Yoshizaki Mine whore, so I need that artbook....in my veins!!!" Should be here soon. ^_^

I actually booted that up last night. I have no clue how I never noticed the analog motion!

I realized that I'd still rather play most of the other Gradius games, though...

Even better, I've been playing some Gaiden on my PSP since I pulled out my 3000 to play some UMDs. Game is my favorite Gradius, just above III for SNES. There are some Gaiden bosses in Oto X (!)

And, I'm a big fan of Rebirth. Gets a lot of hate but I love it!

Gaiden is great from what little I've played. I bought that shortly after Gradius V's JPN release, but haven't seriously sat down with it.
