Oh! Customizable ships! Nice!

Hope most of this year's crop of import shooters are region free...

Gingaforce site is up:

http://gingaforce.qute.jp/top.html

Staff is Director: Mach, Program: M-kai and Sound: Yousuke Yasui (Super Sweep) + others

No videos yet but there's a description of the game on the site. Scratch that, Famitsu has more details:

・Stand-out visuals. Enjoy battles with unique mechs.
・Unlock features, equipment customizations and other replay value.
・The shield system and other aspects of the first game are continued in this one.
・Depending on your play result, you can earn new equipment for your craft
・Your ship's equipment carries over from one play to the next
・Once you clear the game you can change equipment and difficulty to enjoy the game again
・Over 10 stages

Since this thing will sell in the low thousands, will never be localised, i'd say greatly, given the precendent with Qute's previous title.

Unless MS is making it tougher for region-free -ness.

Great news (potentially)!

Any videos of this game up?

Edit: Oh - seems both NCSX and PA have it listed as region locked :(

Don't go by them...that is the standard listing till proven otherwise. Still hope.

No videos yet, but hopefully soon! Everybody is chomping at the bit...maybe not chomping, but this is the twenty-fith retail shooter release for the 360 so a good event for fall (38 total shooter releases including XBLA), and three big ones released this year!

Still hoping Crimzon Clover Arcade version gets ported down the road, as well.

I was reading about PM Studios (Publishers of Strikers 1945 Plus for the PSP), and there was plans in 2010 to release Gunbird 2 Remix for the PSP. Man, Gunbird 2 on Vita....

I just want Sine Mora on my Vita. I didn't get the chance to play it on XBLA because I don't own a 360, hearing that it's coming to PSV gets me super excited in the pants. I might consider importing Under Defeat on PS3, I presume it's English friendly?

About Ginga Force's region free status, someone on shmups forum e-mailed them and their reply was this:

"This software will be released only in Japan.
But We think that region-Free is promising choices though we have not decided region-Code yet.

Sincerely,"

So I guess it's now up to Microsoft whether they'll allow it to be released rf.

Yeah there's nothing major that needs to be translated. You'll be fine.

Ok, I need some Saturn shooter recommendations!

I've got about 25 already (see below), but I'm gonna be in japan in about two weeks and would like to add to my collection...maybe 5-8 more titles. Honestly, looking to spend only about $250 on Saturn stuff cause I wanna get some other things on Hu...so no Blast Wind or Hyper Duels. Looking for some of the more reasonable titles as I aim for complete collection down the road.

And, is Sine Mora a buy? Just hooked up the 360. I missed the thread when it was released but I hear bad things nowadays.

Any suggestions welcome!

I've been told it's great. I want it, really bad. I don't have a 360 so I'm waiting on the Vita version, it'll have an exclusive character from Under Defeat anyway. The main thing though? It'll look GORGEOUS on that OLED.

That's a tough question to answer for me (SineMora). - at first I was like "Oooooh!", but then I was like "oh." :)

It's not a bad game - but the timer mechanics really changes the feel of this game...in a bad way IMO. It has some really interesting backdrops, awesome graphics, some cool ideas...but for some reason it just didn't come together for me.

I didn't hate it, but didn't love it...and was a bit disappointed because it had a lot of potential.

Not feeling Sine Mora, at all. The animated interstitial scenes kinda kill it. Don't know why...sometimes they work well in games like Einhander. I think because they take awsy your ability to shoot during them which throws me off. Will try it on the Vita, though.

Heads up: having a blast with Darius Burst SP iOS. Totally awesome. Recommended, if a bit pricey.

You need to turn those cd cases around so we can read the english titles on the other side. :P I recognize a few, but that's it. Do you have Layer Section? I love(d) it. Haven't hooked up my Saturn in a while though. I can't tell if Darius Gaiden is up there, I see a few Taito titles, though.

That is a good point! Still looking for recommendations! Mabye 5-8 titles. Maybe a fun platformer as well.

The one still in japanese is Kingdom Grand Prix.

Needs more Psikyo, Strikers I & II, and Gunbird.

How is Kingdom Grandprix? I'm actually looking to pick that up.

Psikyo, duly noted. Those three are added to my shopping list. Gonna look for a Gunbird 2 DC if I can find it for 40-ish as well.

Have not really played Kingdom outside of a few minute. Really cool idea, though. Liked what I saw.

Also, is that platformer unique to Saturn and likely never to be ported?

I believe so, I've never seen or heard anything about it other than the two games (the original was a Sega CD shmup). Looking at that box shot, it looks like the only copyright is Victor, and I don't think they care about video games any more.

Anyone want to explain why the HELL Saturn Batsugun has that awkwardly large case that doesn't fit in a cd rack? GRRRRR. It's not like the manual is larger than any other!

Wondering the same. I've got a few like that...Cotton 2 being another example. Can understand Cotton cause it comes with a calander, but then Gradius Deluxe comes with a small papercraft ship and in a normal case?!

Probably somebody like A Black Falcon would know.

Blazing Star out next month for J-land VC. NA is a bit behind but D4 has been pretty aggresive on the service lately, so a good chance it (and Pulstar) will show up stateside eventually.

Companies like Banpresto, Capcom, and Konami liked to ship their games in oversized cases for some reason back then. Probably to differentiate between regular audio CD's and software. Or because they felt it was more baller. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nothing is as bad as the grotesquely oversized cases JP PSX games tended to come in. Those are horrible because you can't even swap them with regular jewel cases if they get damaged because the inserts and manuals are all that much bigger. ugh

Euro DC cases are a bizarre size as well.

So, GAF, spend my next shmup monies for me:

Saturn $$$ Set, Choose One:
- Hyper Duel
- Blast Wind
- Cotton Boomerang

Saturn $$ Set, Choose One:
- Layer Section II
- Kingdom Grand Prix
- Metal Black

Dreamcast, Choose One:
- Zero Gunner 2
- Border Down

Doesn't seem like any of the other posthumous DC shmups (Psyvariar, Chaos Field, Trizeal, Radilgy, etc.) are worth the price of admission? I already own Trigger Heart, Karous, and the NG:DEV.TEAM shmups.

Hmm...

-Hyper Duel
-Metal Black
-Zero Gunner 2

If you can only have one from that entire list: Zero Gunner 2.

Can't really speak for the Saturn stuff, as I haven't played those games. For Dreamcast Zero Gunner 2 is a must have, as is Psyvariar 2. Skip Chaos Field, Trizeal, and Radirgy, they're not so hot.

Saturn: Cotton Boomerang!* COTTON BOOMERANG!**

Dreamcast: Zero Gunner 2

*I'm super biased though. <3 Cotton. Hyper Duel is ace too. :P

**Cotton 2 is better than Boomerang.

What about Shikigami 2?

Wait, I thought Boomerang was an updated 2?

Wait, I thought Boomerang was an updated 2?

It's not so much that it's 'updated' as much as it is remixed. It's got somewhat improved graphics but the overall mechanics are very different. I just enjoy C2 a lot more, personally. I don't like how Boomerang's character switching is limited and acts as a bomb stock, especially when characters level up separately, and in my opinion it's far too manic for a game with such large hitboxes. C2's pacing and enemy density was just right and it played almost like a shooter with puzzle elements based around how you chain sealed enemies. Boomerang has a lot of characters to try, but I did miss the amusing story scenes from 2.

It's really just personal opinion though. You can't go wrong with either.

DotEmu and SNK Play more Just put out Blazing Star on iOS and Android. I'm not too thrilled with having to constantly tap the "A button," while sliding my thumb around to steer the ship. There also seems to be slight lag when moving, similar to Taito's Layer Section. Also, trying to edit text on a Nexus 7 really sucks.

There's a Ginga Force feature in the latest Famitsu Xbox 360. Lots of new game screens.

(Can't post scans here so I won't...)

■Characters

Heroes
Alex (main character)
Margaret (busty sidekick)

Enemies
Jack
Tinny
Seram
Genzou

■Concept

2D shooting with some 3D action sections, namely those sort of sections in Eschatos where you're at a quasi-3D perspective and firing into the background. As mentioned earlier, weapon customization is a big feature for the game. 10 stages "plus more".

■Equipment

8 equipment slots.

Main Weapon
Sub Weapon
Special
Speed? (hard to read)
Spare Ship
Extra Slot 1
Extra Slot 2
Extra Slot 3

As you play you earn money, called CR and you use this to buy equipment. Over 20 varieties of main weapon including front shot, Laser, Wave, 20 varieties of sub weapon: wide, cross, option bit, 10 special weapons including shields, charge bombs and extra slot equippables which reduce energy you need to use your special shot, show you breakable points on bosses etc.

■Countdown Timer System
This is a big part of the game system apparently. The game displays a timer at certain parts of the game and if you can accomplish certain tasks within that time, the "game content and conversations between characters" change. Examples of tasks are destroying certain parts of a boss within the time limit and destroying all of a certain set of enemies.

■Score Attack Mode
Choose from default ship types and compete for score. From what's written here it looks like you can only play this on a single stage of your choosing in Training Mode, which would be disappointing if true.

■Soundtrack
Yosuke Yasui is the main composer as stated previously, also joined by Yasuhisa Watanabe (of Senko fame).

■Release Date
Planned to be released within 2012
