Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

In my mind, Pengo always was a Sega game even though they only published it.
Still, I can't seem to get that connection out of my head after all these years.

Anyway. The Cave DLC pack for DariusBurst is finally available in Europe. Just bought it myself. :)

Is DB any good if the only horizontal shooter you've played is Deathsmiles? I heard the game has much content for the buck but I don't like games that feel generated. The boss designs look cool.

While it's not my favourite Darius game, that one remains Darius Gaiden for me personally.
I do love Darius Burst. It's not the prettiest game out there but it sure is a ton of fun.
So I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.
And yes, there's tons of content in there. Yet nothing feels randomly generated.

Oh, and I just bought the digital version of this:

uoMpqbX.jpg

Quickly scanned through it to get a feel for it and it looks like it's really packed with tons of great info and screens. :)

Gonna pick up a physical copy sometimes soon I think.

I don't really see how that's so surprising as it focussed on relatively older games (8-16 and 32-bit) with a few exceptions, and those thrived on consoles and in the arcade especially.

That's what I mean, though: there's notably more of a console focus than an arcade one, and this genre in particular is about as arcade as it gets.

Ah, I thought you meant there was very little PC coverage in there.
Well it does seem to cover the catalogues of certain devellopers (Compile for instance) and series. But yeah, very few arcade exclusive games in there.
R-Type Leo is one. Cosmic Cop being another.
And some weird stuff like Star Soldier vs Dodonpachi Daioujou for mobile phones.
Let's hope Vol.2 has a bit more arcade only coverage.

Then again, I'm very happy too see a ton of PC-Engine stuff in there as you hardly got anything in print back in the day that wasn't in Japanese.

I'm more of a Vert fan, but DBCS is my most played shmup ever. I've been whittling away at the content. Last night I discovered some stages that definitely had some hands on care. Yes there are some repetitive ones, but the enemy patterns tend to change up as well as difficulty from enemies.

With that said there are a lot of plain stages. But you do have morexperience detailed stages that are just fantastic. I've seen 6 so far. I just discovered an underwater one yesterday.

Every node of stages in CS mode and DLC mode have their own leaderboards. Also, the music in places like Sanmo is just some next level stuff. It's fun just to play the game to discover more tracks. It makes me.wish that they would release the soundtrack on STEAM. Hopefully they'll do it when the 8ing DLC hits.

Two of the arcade modes are traditional stages in a Darius-style branching tree. These are well-done and unique, and it's a wonderful game there without even touching the broader "world map" modes.

I mostly play vertical shmups and I still love this game. It's my most played Vita game for the past few weeks by far. While some of the content is repetitive, there's enough variation for it to not matter unless you're doing really long sessions daily. The one thing to remember with this game is that the CS mode is much easier than the game lets on; the preset conditions are borderline ridiculous sometimes, while unlocking a custom ship and powering it up with points makes things much more manageable. CS mode is huge, so being stuck on one level will just make fatigue set in faster. Even towards the beginning of the mode, the presets can be tough for anyone who isn't a genre veteran. Once I unlocked the Gaiden and powered it up with points, the CS mode became much more fun than when I was playing with presets exclusively.

I try to use the presets, but some of these stages get a bit ridiculous. Especially ones that require scoring to unlock alternate paths.

The nice thing about it is that the upgrades are up to your discretion; you can go in with full attack power and 30 armor but still have a difficult time, or gamble with 60 armor and get an almost guaranteed victory at the risk of having a points deficit unless you score enough to make a profit. I did presets only for the first few hours, but realized I'd probably never see the ending if I continued that way. With over 100 levels, there's not much incentive to arbitrarily get yourself stuck on the same one for more than a few attempts. The boss health gets out of hand quickly and I've never been a fan of excessive attempts in games with autoscrolling elements or where most of the gameplay speed is out of my control. Anything past a 30 armor powerup runs the risk of a huge point deficit anyway; you'd have to score really well, get no damage clears or make the deficit up elsewhere to make excessive upgrades profitable anyway.

Does anyone know which ship they are using from Soukyugurentai? I love that game. It was the first game I ever imported back in 1996 or 97... can't remember. It's in my Top 5 of all time. So, needless to say, I'm pretty stoked for the 8ing DLC.

Picked up Blue Revolver, currently 33% off, the best tenner I've spent since Trouble Witches Origin (tihihi). I was a bit worried about the game's pace, it looked a bit too fast for my taste. Yeah, none issue. Plays like a dream, so well tuned, the scoring isn't overly complicated, just fun and super satisfying.

I just bought Kromaia.
Soooo confusing. I guess i just expected something else.

Has anyone in here played it? What is your opinion about this game?

I bought that Super Galaxy Squadron EX game, but why does it not have stick support? I tried PS4 mode, PS3 mode plus running it through DS4Windows, but nothing works. I'd rather not having to run it through XPadder since it says it has full controller support. Luckily I can refund it if there's no non-annoying solution. It's the only shmup I've bought on Steam with no stick support at all.

Try the Beta branch for the new TURBO edition. Maybe it has a fix for it. It's 'tunnelsnakesrule' as the beta branch password. My arcade stick works but it has a Brooks PCB. I can try on my to change it to PS4 mode.

Edit: I just tried 3 different sticks and they all work except for when I put them in PS3 or PS4 mode :(

You can try and notify them here https://twitter.com/TheNewBloods?lang=en

Then if they add support you can buy it again later.

I tried the beta branch and the regular branch with no luck. No inputs work at all. It looks like a fun game, but I'd rather not play it with a controller or make an XPadder profile when it says it has full controller support. I'm on a Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 that doesn't have the PC switch, which is getting increasingly more annoying with this game and Dodonpachi Resurrection's broken controller mapping.

Yeah, I have the HRAP4 revision (why are there so many revisions with the same model name?) that doesn't have the PC switch, so it's basically a paperweight on games like this. I'll ask them on Twitter, otherwise I'll refund it. I'll just feel bad since apparently the proceeds to go charity.

It's all good man. If shooters on a pad isn't your thing then it's no biggie. I only play certain shooters like Valkyrius Prime on a pad due to the control scheme of the game.

Have you tried maybe mapping it through STEAM BIG SCREEN'S PS4 mapping tool? I've never tried it and don't know how to go about doing it, but you could try and see if that works.

I used x360ce with the first version of SGS, worth a shot. That tools emulates a 360 controller and, on its backend, just setup whatever controller/stick you want.

I couldn't get that thing to work at all. It did nothing when I tried it with a stick. Frustrated how I have to buy another stick with a PC switch to get around all these obnoxious problems, even though Hori's site clearly indicates that the HRAP4 is supposed to have the switch on all revisions.

Listening to Soukyugurentai's soundtrack by Sakimoto and it is by far THE best OST out of any shmup in my opinion. The only other one to compare is Radiant Silvergun, and that was composed by him as well. I really hope Takahashi Kouta does some great remixes for the DBCS DLC. He's a wonderful composer as well, but he's like on the opposite side of the spectrum and deals with more electro/techno/jazz/experimental music. He did amazing in Ridge Racer and Tekken. We'll see.

Soukyugurentai... How I would love to see a re-release of that amazing game. Best Saturn shmup IMO.

Sorry that I couldn't be of anymore help. I have a Brooks PCB in my main stick and the others are PS360+ and a HRAP XB1 stick. You could get a brooks PCB, but they are a tad expensive. Just message the team and see if they have plans. They are pretty nice guys. Even the Turbo DLC is coming out free. If they don't have plans to get that working then just refund it.

I'm going to try and see if this PS4 controller thing works for me on STEAM. It's mapping my buttons, but it's blinking on and off and is trying to make me map analog sticks before trying to save... What a hassle.

Sakimoto even mentioned in an interview that Soukyu & RS are his favorite shmup soundtracks that he made, and I have to agree, they both came out superb.

Him and Namiki are probably my favorite two composers, but then again, the whole Basiscape team is really talented. There's a great interview with them if you haven't read it already: http://shmuplations.com/basiscape/

Thanks for the article. Good to see me and Sakimoto share the same taste in his STG music lol.

But... There is a STG's soundtrack that may trump my Soukyu's for me

The teaser posted up here for Danmaku Unlimited 3's trailer has music in the vine loop. If that is a taste of what is to come... Holy shit. I'm praying that it releases with a soundtrack.

My first 1CC of 2017, Blue Revolver on Normal. Man, I love that game.

BTW, its binary isn't encrypted or anything, the exe can be opened/extracted with 7zip for a treasure trove of wallpaper-worth PNG files and more.

So, I just bought PSP Strikers 1945 Plus (for $5.00) to play on Vita. The internet tells me this is a remake of Strikers 1945 II, originally on the Neo Geo.
This game seems pretty enjoyable so far. In fact, I'm really getting into both the Strikers series and the Aero Fighters / Sonic Wings series.

Good stuff.

What is the best version of Lord of Thunder outside the PCE CD? I have the Turbo Duo but the asking price of LoT on eBay is insane. Has anyone tried the one on Wii Virtual Console? I bought the PSN version from JP PSN but the sound is garbage since it was compressed.
