Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Eschatos, Otomedius X, Strania and what are the other two?

And yeah, growing slightly concerned about Trouble Witches too :/
Mamoru-kun at the end of march for triple love...and Bullet Soul first week of april.

Betcha the iphone DS goes out next month, too. Knowing how many hours I put into the other two iOS games I'm expecting I'll wind up playing DS on that platform more than I ever have on the 360.

Either way, I'm gone from march 18 through the third week of april so all these titles will be waiting for me when I get back. ;-(

Amiami is awesome. I have ordered figures from them in the past. I hear they're pretty good about preorder bonuses when it comes to games too. I should have ordered through them now that I think about it.

I plan on doing this in the future, actually. I trend more towards buying larger figures now instead of a series of smaller ones (they're easier to display and see) and their prices are usually pretty good. How is their packaging when shipping things?

Ah yeah. Wasn't counting Mamoru as I own it on 360 so it's not on my preorder list :P No excuse for forgetting Bullet Soul though!

Besides Strania, is Otomedius and Eschatos coming to the U.S.?

Otomedius is (as Otomedius Excellent, although I don't think there is a set date and it has been delayed at least once), Eschatos very unlikely although I suppose there is the chance of it being region free.

I believe Eschatos was confirmed as being region-free, no?

Any Crimzon Clover fans out there who would be interested in the OST. Got it with my game order more to send the developers an extra $20 rather than listen. Put it on my iPod and don't need the actual CD anymore. Don't collect or listen to game music so I wanna donate it to a neogaf shooter lover...not in the normal neogaf giveaway thread. I dunno, maybe run a small contest or something?

Bummer, nobody wants the Crimzon Clover OST ;-(

Last call before it gets retired to my game shelf for eternity...

Holy moly, awesome. <333

I'd take it if no one else is calling you on it, but I'm a nobody here so I'm not sure if you're willing to give it to someone like that. :(

The music from the trailers sounds shit hot.

--------------------------

Yes it has been confirmed that it is region free.

Also, apparently, so is BulletSoul. No idea if this was already known but I read this first about it today on NCSX's blog. If there was talk about it elsewhere, I must have missed it.

Soundtrack isn't too shabby. I've been wanting to play the game but haven't gotten around to it. Need to get around to updating this thread again with the shooters coming out on the horizon. (I can't wait to finally play Radiant Silvergun)

ColonelSkills,

PM your address and it goes out monday...post office is closed here on the weekends. If it is not to your liking, the music, then just pass it along.

So Bullet Souls will be region free! NCSX confirmed this on their site:

"Update: March 04, 2011
5bp has confirmed overnight that Bullet Soul will be a region-free release that is
playable on USA and European Xbox 360 consoles."

Now this is awesome! So much shooters coming. The game looks great too and I'm loving the music so these news are exciting.

I've still never gotten around to getting into Gradius. Should I try to play all the games or just the most recent one?

If all the games, then what's the best way to get them? Virtual Console or is there some kind of collection?

There's a compilation on PSP with I-IV and Gaiden. It was even released domestically.
I'd recommend grabbing Gradius V on PS2 though. It's the most modern one from a game design perspective and probably easiest to get in to out of all the games in the series.

Ditto, first thing I did with my new MacBook Pro was get PCSX2 up and running with Gradius V.
I only own 2 PS2 games anymore this and Silmeria. I'd still pay large sums of cash for a great PSN/XBLA port or an HDMI PS2 slim.

So, under-the-radar release....but Aldynes came out a few weeks on PSN and VC (both JPN). Been playing it daily. In many ways better than the R-Type it knocks off. Definitely give it a shot. Always was my favorite for the PCE along with Gate of Thunder back when I was in high school. And hard to play since it was for the Supergrafx. Sad, I could not even find a thread on shmups celebrating its release. Added bonus: the PSN release can be played on your PSP/Go.

And, Gradius Gaiden is the best gradius game ever made...pick up that PSP compilation asap...also on PSN.

JustAnotherOtaku said:
Completely agree with this. Fantastic compilation and can probably be had quite cheap now.
Gradius Gaiden is worth it by itself! Gaiden is possibly my FAVORITE shooter of all time. Since I started playing it a couple months ago I've 1cc'd it like 4 times. I love it soooo much. Everyone who has even a remote affinity for hori shooters MUST try it.

I have the psx version though so I have no idea how good the psp port is. I've seen a few videos on youtube and some parts look a bit weird, like the bosses don't scale or rotate as smoothly.

Seconding. I'm more of a Raiden guy but Gradius Gaiden is pretty damned awesome.
PSP one was butter smooth for me but I'm not sure how my expectations stack against you guys.

Anyone here excited for Eschatos?

Personally, I'm more interested in this one title than most things this year. I just love that 'retro' look of it, and the inclusion of Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins makes it even better.

So many great shooter releases for the start of this year, and I still haven't even played much of any recent releases... :(

Eschatos is my most anticipated shooter since Mushi Futari and Pink Sweets.

Game will be awesome. Cheap, region-free, packed with games and extras! Hope everyone buys it here on GAF for some leaderboard fun...never get to compete on the Cave titles since they are so tough. I'll be able to do better on Eschatos...possibly even one-credit it.

Absolutely! Got my preorder sorted the other day so I'm good to go on the 24th :)

Although I love Cave and it's great that we've had so many of their games in a relatively short period of time, I'm actually looking forward to this, Bullet Soul and Strania as a little change from Cave. That's not to say Akai Katana isn't near the top of my most wanted list, just that some non-Cave shmups will be a nice change.

Oooooh, I'm going to check that out right now.

I concur - Gaiden is awesome - made signing up for a JPN account worth it alone.

Yeah, i might actually go for the 1CC with Eschatos. I stopped playing these games well over 10yrs ago, so I'm no good xD Never really have the time to put into them either, but I'm really looking forward to giving these upcoming releases a good go. Eschatos and Bullet Soul being at the top of my list for anticipated games this year :)

I'm happy to finally see some shmups released in the EU. Recently picked up Deathsmiles and have the new Shikigami game on Wii preordered. Also the new Raiden game whenever it comes out!

Whoo!

Finally got a score of 1 million+ on Garegga! And made it to stage 4 for the first time!
Congrats! It is a damn hard game.

I wish Raizing would release a compilation of Garegga, Batrider and Bakraid. Those games are so good and I'd like to have them playable on my 360 with leaderboards and replay downloads.

I have kinda given up the hope for a PAL release of Raiden Fighters Aces. It has been delayed so many times it is getting kinda ridiculous.

Yeah,

Batrider and Bakraid are two holy grail titles for me. Watch tons of youtubes of them and dream for some type of retail release. Maybe I'll just have to settle for the PCBs down the line.

Garrega is really a GREAT game. Up there with Gradius Gaiden, Mushi Futari as the best in my eyes.

Are you playing "normally" or are you trying to abuse the birds in level 2 with the Wild Snail?
just playing normally...as in turning on the system and picking the default character. stuck with it for a few hours and made some headway. just playing for survival and trying to kill the bosses as fast as possible before they get angry. and leaving my options spread out...not using the third button on the saturn pad at all. sometimes the medals get nice and high which is fun.

New Jamestown trailer. Looks freaking awesome. Can't make thread :(

This looks pretty awesome even though I'm awful at these kinds of games.

I noticed that there's a single score counter shared between the 4 players. That looks very interesting, maybe the game will have a co-op based scoring system? it would be great if the highest scores would be possibile only in 4 players games (with separate leaderboards, of course), usually in shmups it's the other way around.

Is there anything special (or different, aside from cover art and stuff) on the platinum budget re-releases of Espgaluda II and Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5? I bought a copy of each from the first print run but haven't opened them yet, and was thinking about picking up the reprints to play instead and maybe selling the older ones.

Jamestown looks awesome!

Does anybody have some recommendations for some good SHMUPs that are in 16:9/widescreen for PS3 or 360 (and playable on a US console)? It doesn't matter if they are vertical or horizontal scrolling. FYI- I already have Deathsmiles and Soldner X.

Anyone excited for G.Revs Strania that is being released tomorrow?

Game looks pretty good based on the trailer and it seems to be very Radiant Silvergunish. For 800 points I'll be grabbing this day 1 for sure. Would have preferred a retail release, but whatever. G. Rev has a pretty good track record so this is a no brainer.

Here's the most recent trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4EC4m73SQk
