Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

$10. Worth a shot. DS version is the more fun one of the two recent releases. Not my cup of tea as it was a bit too much "in your face" with the turorial. But I'll give it another go since you brought it up.

I picked it up last night. Having fun so far. It's kind of intimidating at first.

I wish the 3DS had an option to reverse the screens. The bottom screen on the 3DS XL has that nasty glazed look that dulls the colors.

AKAI KATANA NOW $14.99 on Amazon cheapest it's ever been. RUN RUN RUN this post from last page says it all.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007UMD1EI/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Its a really top notch shmup where you have to change between ship form and ghost form. You also get a satellite in ship form and you have to build meter in ship form to stay in ghost form longer. Its got mechanics that equate to shoot in one form to build metal, shift to other form to have that converted to bullet destroying katanas, fire said katanas for big gold. And it also has mechanics where if you stay in one form gold won't be collected and it will hover around you growing in size until you shift back. There even bullet reflection in this game.

It sounds like a lot, but with all these tools its way easier than a lot of other cave shmups in my eyes, and it allows for absolutely ridiculously high scores to be achieved by bouncing between forms, and juggling bullets/gold/metal/katanas to find new ways to churn out higher scores out of areas of stages. Lots to do and each mode place drastically different using some of these tools and not others.

Get in here...its cheap and awesome.

Shooter-GAF!

What's the best shooters available on the DS/3DS platform? NanoStray looks good, but I'm not a huge fan and that sort of shooter(reminds me a lot of Super Star Dust).

Any word on Liberation Maiden? Any other shooters worth a look?

Liberation Maiden and Nanosrtay are good but, yeah, they are not really gonna scratch your shooter itch for the system.

Sadly, not much out there. There is a small, cool, and cheap shooter on DSiWare published by Nintendo called Metal Torrent. Made by Arika. If you wanna spend a little more there is the import Ketsui Death Label. A boss rush game of Ketsui. But that goes for about $100 no, a 40% markup since it is out of print.

And painfully, there have been no classic GB shooters show up on VC yet for 3DS.

Thanks man - ill check out Metal Torrent for sure.

I took the plunge for Liberation Maiden -so far I'm really liking it. Not exactly a precision based shooter though... Especially for a lefty. :/ But it's fun so far and no regrets.

Would love Ketsui...but not for that kind if money. Don't mind spending $$$ on home console games and PCBs, but I have to draw the line at handhelds. :)

Thanks!

Well I heard Quarth came out a while back, granted it's a puzzle game...but you have a ship and shoot the puzzle pieces!

Oh yeah,

I got that...I pretty much buy every GB/GBC game that comes to 3DS VC.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Gradius GB and Nintendo's own Solar Striker. Not really well-loved games but I liked them when released. R-Type GB probably won't make it. Japanese VC store will likely get some of the rarer shooter titles released over there...their VC shop is much more active.

Honestly, I'm hoping for an R-Type Final re-release. That game was ridiculously meaty. 101 ships for unlocking plus all the attachments.

I was like, shit, I'll drive down there and get it. Then googled the distance and it was 950 miles away...I got no perspective on the East Coast.

It's still too far for me. But man, I sure do want it.

Star Parodia (Parodier?) arrived today, and its actually not that bad. Had to crank it up to hard mode for the bosses to put up a decent fight. Its a relaxing shooter if that makes any sense, and its just cool to fly around with a giant PC engine or Bombermanship. Only thing I dont like about the game is that the sound effects seem really low compared to everything else.

Still waiting for Parodius DX and Galactic Attack for Saturn to arrive.

EDIT: Whats with Salamander / Life Force trying to give you a seizure for no reason in stage 2?

I did it. I bought Hyper Duel.

Just couldn't take it any more. I'm a lifelong Technosoft fan, and I've listened to the Hyper Duel OST regularly for about six years - before I even had a Saturn.

Hyper Duel...for some reason I think of Blast Wind - was that Tecnosoft as well?

Two games I've wanted for ages, one day I'll start collecting Saturn stuff again. Not today though, heh. Though the present is always best when it comes to buying Saturn imports.

edit: the internet confirms Blast Wind is Tecnosoft as well.

Random trivia, the guy who designed Hyper Duel (Mamoru Furukawa) went on to design Ibara Black Label and many of the CAVE iPhone Modes, including DDPR and Deathsmiles.

Picked Blast Wind over the summer. Only played it for a bit but it does seem stellar...pick your path and top view for a Technosoft game, so pretty cool. Could not find it for less than $100.

Fwuck yeah. Major congratulations! I'm sure you'll receive your exclusive club card in the mail any day now.

I got lucky with my Garegga. CMoon on shmups was offloading a large portion of his collection and he gave me a fantastic deal.

You just have to keep hunting. Oh and accepting that you will be spending close to triple digits helps.

I will own this one day... and congrats from me as well. Blast Wind was Technosoft as well, but one of their easier games I think.

Honestly any highly sought after Saturn game is an investment. If you ever want a lump of cash or just get tired of the game, you can be sure that the value will be a decent amount more than you paid in a year or two time.

That's so true. Saturn games have pretty much only appreciated with time, especially if you have the long boxes they came in intact.

Radiant Silvergun is probably one of the few that's come down thanks to the Xbox Live Arcade release. That's rare though.

Pulled out Gradius V and a PS2 and gonna start playing it! Had for a couple years. This will be first time go. I've got enormous expectations for it. Last Gradius I played extensively was the Wiiware release. Gaiden being my favorite followed by Gradius II SNES.

I've never been a huge Gradius fan (R-Type for life) but I'll admit that V is the game that made me rethink my shooting game word view. It's also one of the only shooting games I can think of that has a "serious" (by shooting game standards) story that holds any water at all. During the story twist I actually said "whoa." I'm impressed, Treasure.

I had a huge question mark during the whole
space time distortion
sequence. Best english voice acting i've ever heard in a shoot em up, and a pretty cool sequence once you see what happened...but kinda leaves the question "is this destined to happen over and over?". Maybe i'm overthinking it :P

Oh wow. You're in for a treat ! GV is one of my favorite shmups ever. Use that mode that lets you aim the option 360 degrees .. Whatever it was called.

And that techno-symphonic Sakamoto score!!

Ha ha. That's the brilliant shit about it. It makes you think, "wait, what?" I personally was more impressed by the fact that a Japanese game tied up its loose strings. The fact that that's impressive makes me sad, but fuck yeah, Treasure made it happen!

Shmupdate!

Got a dusty Toaplan Sky Shark PCB on the way. Haven't played the arcade game - only the NES version way back when.

Been in the mood for some old (like 80s old) shooters lately - ...and biplanes.

I'm having a strange month.

I've been playing quite a bit of Raiden Fighters Jet on my telephone, and its quite awesome. It gives you an extra life to start with for some reason (it's supposed to default to three lives), and the sound is screwed up in some spots, but still, getting the Raiden Fighters trilogy (and the original Raiden) on the go for $5 isn't half bad.

Retro game prices fluctuate so much I don't see them as an investment, do you?

Not so much of an investment I guess, but a cool game to have nonetheless.

Dunno if this is old news, but I just got back from Wal-Mart (Canada) and they had stacks of Otomedius Excellent with no silly body pillow. Price? $10. Seems about right.

Ok, so what's the coolest game mechanic you've seen in a shmup?

I recently mentioned loving Akai Katana's scoring mechanic in this thread. Took me a bit to grasp it, but once I did, i was addicted to it.

Basically you mine items to make swords, change to spirit mode, launch swords and closely follow the path they are shot in for big scoring. With some practice, you spot the best places to launch this attack, and it's an awesome rush when you perfect it.
