Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

\Only in PAL-land. There's no NA date just yet, only a promise from NOA that "you won't have to wait much longer".

I should have read this post before rushing to the eShop after reading sixteen's post.

lol why is Curse on a recommendation list?

That game straight-up sucks.

A lot of that stuff looks like shit and probably sucks. I think they are just going for a comprehensive list and a type of ranking. That is what they did with their Saturn list...everything...even the dogs.

Now that we've got Recca, Kokuga and the Streetpass shooter on 3DS, is it possible that 3DS will be the hardware of choice for shooter companies in the upcoming gen?

Whoo!

God I hope so. I'm wondering if the 2DS is going to be going to Japan. That seems like an excellent platform (so to speak) for some new ideas for shooters or ports. Great lack of hinge and screen angle, fantastic placement of D-Pad, and that big canvas of screens.

Also, don't forget we have that Genesis/MD/GBA Steel Empire remake coming to 3DS at the end of the year as well.

Still playing Mii Force. Now tag-teaming two 3DS systems for about an hour each day. Love the game and it is close to my GOTY. But still some very big heavy hitters releasing in the coming months. Favorite games this year so far are: Gunhound EX, Mii Force, Pikmin 3, The Last of Us.

3DS being this generation's 360 in that way would bum me out. I really really like my big screens and arcade sticks. It would be a huge step down for me.

To be honest, the amount of shooters that came out on the 360 and yes, even the PS3 for the last 6 or 7 years is enough to last me a whole gen. There's a lot of shooters that are in my "deep backlog" where I'd like to not only 1CC them, but go hard on them for score in the long term.

So personally I'd be fine with a hand-held next generation....for awhile.

*I would just hope electronic crack like Crimzon Clover keeps coming out in the arcades...
**P.S. Boss, TLOU was indeed fucking amazing.

It would be Crimzon Clover and Darius Burst Arcade as the only games I'm really looking forward to coming next gen. Those would be enough for me.

My 360 and Saturn catalog and then catching up on classics on PCE and things are fine for me. I've barely scratched the surface...just this week finally got to try out Pink Sweets Arrange for the first time. I'd also love a shift to handheld. Sticks are overrated!

*Also, saw you were playing TLoU the last few days. Good times. I'm dying to play it again at a harder level. Last playthrough I did New Game Plus on Normal with no listening...crazy fun.

Possibly. I would like PC to happen too. How are STG developers embracing PC these days?

Commercial-wise? None. Doujin/indie-wise? Most of them are on PC, just that they cannot break through, for example, Greenlight to gain increased awareness. To my knowledge, not a single shmup has been greenlit so far, regardless of their quality and such. And with people obviously ignoring them for being on PC instead of console it makes the scene quite grim.

Recently released gems are Syder Arcade, Danmaku Unlimited 2, Diadra Empty and the three Alltynex games.

Don't forget that face raiders is also pretty good although it's first person.

How likely is it that Karous will be localized?

I'd say very likely given the fact that every single thing seems to be getting localized (that is not Dragon Quest). Not at $60 though! Even Chain Blaster showed up a few weeks later.

And with Pokemon X/Y coming, combined with the cheapy 2DS, the userbase is going to explode.

I'd say it's pretty likely as well, but I wouldn't use G-Style as affirmation that Karous will be localized.

Raiden Fighters Aces got a release recently, right?

Hmm, I just checked and, yep, it seems it came out right next with the original R-Type. They have Android versions too.

By DotEmu but, apparently, these seem to be emulated rather than native PC versions. I think at the shmups forums they were talking about them.

Hey guys...giocorsi is doing a thing on twitter that if you want something brought to PS4 he is taking suggestions on what titles to try and bring over to the console.

https://twitter.com/giocorsi

I asked for bullethell of course, but I'm trying to get a response as to whether or not their could be a way for Sony to get an agreement going with the Taito Nessica Arcade subscription service so that non-japanese Arcade enthusiasts could subscribe to the service through their PS4 to enjoy current Nessica Arcade titles on their PS4 around the globe without having to actually BE in Japan on a Nessica machine.

Theres a lot of fighters and Crimzon Clover's latest build is Nessica exclusive so if they could set it up even as a subscription service I could access via PS4 I'd love it and it'd sell the console to me. Tweet the man with your own suggestions, but mention Nessica titles if this is actually something Sony might be capable of working out some day.

I'm sure Taito wouldn't mind if you pay the $ 3000,- start fee and access to the games on a pay per play basis, the Arcades would protest to the death though and dump the system all together .

We will probably have to wait for any Arcade ports from some of the older titles after the games have had their run in the Arcades .

Oh shit, just read about this. Considering a JPN 3DS unit now. Now to get Cave to make a Deathsmiles and Akai Katana port.

Or at least to get Arika to put Ketsui Death Label on the eShop.

booted up SDOJ for the first time in weeks last night and had so much fun. looks like STGW just did an episode on Fighters Jet so I'll watch that this afternoon and get some games in with deltaZeal after. happy Sunday shmupGAF!

And an amazing one at that.

Right now trying to stop myself from bidding on DUO-Rs on ebay. But I also just ordered a Framemeister so I need to stop spending money. :O

Edit: Meanwhile, scanning once again for reasonable M.U.S.H.A. auctions and finding none (loose cart for $61 is still better than I've seen though..). Thought this time I'd search for the import version and the prices are even worse. Was this cart even rare in JP?

It is minor but I was really hoping that the NA release of Recca would have the proper system at boot-up. Nintendo is usually excellent about this detail with the proper system (Disc System properly rendered for Disc Fami games, for example).

Not a terrible thing but would have been cool to have the import Fami system on the NA system instead of the Classic NES.

Disappointing, but I can understand that the masses would be confused as to why the system looked different.

In either case, completely stoked that we're getting it in the US!

Yeah,

Can't complain about that! Probably too late but I really wish they would release the title on classic Wii VC. Would be awesome with an upscaler. But, I'll take it on Wii U.

Recca is going to play quite excellent and comfortable on the forthcoming 2DS. I'm going to be buying it for one of those as well!

I honestly doubt the 3DS would be able to do those games justice (yes, I own Ketsui DS).
I'd love for Cave to add controller support when iOS7 is out of beta but that will never happen.

People weren't kidding about Recca being fast. I don't know that I've ever seen anything on the NES move so fast.

Hard to deal with it on the small 3DS screen, though maybe the XL is better.

Copy-pasta-ing the below from shmups!
Shooting Gameside Volume 8 has a retrospective on Stunfest 2013, which I helped out on. Pretty awesome that we were able to make this happen!

The article is 6 pages long and is told through an interview with Clover-TAC and Pikachu (head of Wasshoi). There are also occasional background explanations on how the whole idea got started.

Hopefully we'll bring a little bit of the energy and dedication of all the French players who made Stunfest 2013 possible to Japan with this article.

The issue goes on sale September 28th for 1300 yen. There are pictures, but obviously the interview is all in Japanese. Still, it is somewhat historic that the EU shooting scene makes it into a Japanese magazine, so I thought I'd give a shout out here.

P.S. This may (or may not be) the start of something...? Stay tuned...

That is pretty cool adverse.

I'm always so amazed at how hardcore the shmup (and arcade) scene is in EU. Or even retro culture. I've always been meaning to pick up Shooting Gameside...maybe now is a good time to start.

I honestly doubt the 3DS would be able to do those games justice (yes, I own Ketsui DS).

Well I don´t know 3DS specs seem to be better than Cave SH3 system, surely it would be able to run a proper port at their native 320x240 res. If not, one can always hope for Progear no Arashi.

I honestly think it is impossible to play anything bad R-Type.

Seems like every game and every port is excellent. Truly a classic franchise.

Wasn't the R-Type 3 GBA port supposed to be all messed up? And after a quick search:
http://vitaflo.com/v11/thoughts/2004_04/when_ports_go_b.html

Besides business/money issues around whatever deals there were, the port devs got no help/support (and apparently Irem lost the source code) so they basically recreated the game based off the SNES port running in an emulator.

Always wanted to try R-Type Leo

Too bad it's never been ported. I don't know what the state of emulation is for the game, but I know the PCB is quite hard to find as I have been looking for months and was only finally able to locate one this month (although the seller bent me over).

You need to get a Doujin Dance RGB modded DUR-R. Simply incredible in combination with the XRGB mini.

Thanks! Been looking for the name of that ebay seller since Kevin Larrabee mentioned it on 8-4 Play. Now on my list. Need to drop by the GAF PC engine thread to find out the must-have games.

Framemeister is akin to a religious experience.

------

I love Recca. Still can't beat the stage 2 boss but it's great to pick up and try to beat my last high score.

It's available in the DotEmu IREM Arcade Classics comp. It seemed fine to me when I tried it, but I've never been a huge fan of that one.

Got a new PCB today for my Astro City cabinet - Batsugun!

I've been avoiding playing this game on the Saturn for a LONG time because I wanted to play it first when I found the arcade board -

Loving it so far - I'm a big fan of Toaplan, and this seems up there with Dogyuun as one of my favorite Toaplan shooters.

I probably should play it some more before making a statement like that, but this game's XP system and the phenomenal art direction have me hooked. Also appreciate the short levels - especially after playing a lot of Tatsujin Oh (Truxton 2) for the last few weeks.

Fucking awesome! Batsugun is easily in my top three favorite shmups.

First time my dude leveled up, blew my mind.

LOL - me to. I really had no idea about the XP stuff, and next thing I know, my ship explodes into lightning and it screams LEVEL UP.

I almost shit my pants.

Beltiana (Type B) seems to be my favorite ship/pilot so far, but all of the types are great IMO.

Question: Is it possible to hit Level 2 before the Stage 2? I've been looking for ways to get more XP quicker, but havent seen anything...

I don't think it's possible, but I've never really tried too hard.
