I’ve been teaching American and World history for almost 20 years. In that time, I have told my students that they’re setting themselves up for a disappointment if they put today’s morals on the people of the past. We can look back and see examples of slavery, native relocation, or even your example of whitewashing and to us it makes little ethical sense; however, to them, it totally falls in their view of the world at the time. Think about the world to DaVinci; in his lifetime the Europeans discovered the New World (very few 15th century Europeans knew the Vikings had been there earlier) and it would be more than 250 years after his death before we would discover Australia.

I imagine that the people 500 years from now will look back at us like morons, but it’s not really our fault, it’s how we view our world and ethics and how those contrast with the people of future.
