"Should" enhanced unemployment continue?

The $600 bonus is suppose to run out at the end of July and I been seeing and hearing a lot of thing from both side. On one end $600 bonus each week is ALOT, more than what some people make normally so it give those people less incentive to go back to work till the bonus run out. On the other hand, some of the service industry is absolutely CRUSHED by covid 19 like restaurant. Cook and managers might be a little better off but tip worker like waiter got hit hard, I heard some story they get 50-100 a week. I see the issue with both side and I ain;t sure what is the correct answer is. I am a part-timer on 1099 myself and I am eligible for the under/un-employment thank to PUA. Right now i am working on reduced hours so i am eligible for the bonus but I agree $600 is too much.

I hope so, really. It's shed a light on labor conditions in the United States. We all knew there was a problem to begin with, but seeing the government take better financial care of it's citizens than most employers is pretty damning. And people have been spending, which is good. The Dow was just shy of 30k before this mess began and it's scratching back toward 26k from a low of 18k. Slowing that growth isn't what we want to do.

Will probably get slashed on the next Stimulus Package. Trump admin isn’t fond of it. They are looking to get people back to work.

I still think we are going to get a final check though ($1,200 or higher).

I think it does need to be tapered off, dropping it completely in an instant is gonna crush some people, keeping it going at max is gonna slow the recovery.

Agree, too much free money made people lazy. Maybe instead of $600 bonus, slash it to $300 to give people incentive to go back to work while the peopel who actually need help can still get something as like i said, some industry is completely gone for now

Agree. The “silver lining” is that the mortality rate is less than 1% and it is extremely rare to contract it multiple times.

This is going to be with us until Q1-Q2 2021 (even longer for some people/countries) we have to learn to live with it.

Yes, continue until this pandemic is over. Many business are still impacted by it and it's a life saver for me.

Death rate is lower but the infected rate is still high with state like Florida like 10k case a days and the after effect of the seriously ill is no joke.

I’ve been working this whole time and make less than basically everyone on unemployment right now. I fucking hate that but I ain’t mad at the people on unemployment for it

I’m an essential worker with USPS and, while I report as usual, I’m fine with those getting the unemployment especially if they have family.

People without jobs are living day to day in uncertainty. I think it’s fair to give them a safety net. Can they still look for work? Sure, but that was already a requirement for unemployment in the first place. There’s no telling when we’ll get back to “normal”

I already have one, thank you very much. I just don't have any work since all bars in my state are shut down, hence i need this unemployment to survive.
Yet you’ve posted multiple times about all the disposable income you have, including this past Wednesday.
No, i haven't pirated anything since Limewire/Frostwire days as a teen. Now that i have a disposable income i have no need for it. I understand why it happens and i'm not going to get on my high horse about it. All i will say is if you have the means to support your favorite artists please do so.

You’re just a leech on a system designed for people in need.

You can't be on unemployment and just not look for work... That's a requirement to continue getting the unemployment. And even then, most people are still underpaid because profits over people...

I think this and a UBI are needed until COVID-19 is down to MUCH MORE manageable levels and the curve has flattened significantly. Once that's done... End the unemployment increase and UBI.

It actively incentivizes people not to work.

Give people their normal unemployment benefits. There's no need to pay above and beyond

So, i have more than $0. So does that mean I'm not entitled to unemployment? Give me a break. I'm layed off from my work.

No it doesn't. Because the money is finite. And you HAVE to look for work in the meantime... It's mandatory! Not everyone has Megabucks like you (seemingly since you think regular unemployment is enough).

They need to extend it in some form. The Democrats idea for it is fine. Tie it to unemployment rate during pandemic.

That's the catch.

This virus will never go away. Look how long it took for us to get rid of polio even after the vaccine was available to the public.
Well, if government can offer job that can be safely done at home and are willing to hire people that lost job then i suppose they can cut the unemployment.

No riots have proven these people have more then they need. Cut unemployment to a bear minimum and kill EBT entirely. Get a job or get fucking wrecked.

I'm usually not a fan of government spending on this level... But fuck it.

I still have to pay rent and bills they don't just let me live there for free. + Being positive for covid i cant just go back to work when i want to either. Know the full story before you judge someone.
I’m going to take a wild guess and say they won’t kick you out if you can’t pay rent. But saying you have “disposable income” is key to everything. You would survive easily without the additional $600 per week.

People are making more money on unemployment than when they had a job.

Which is why the minimum wage should Have been increased ages ago

It should taper off, but it certainly isn’t going to help to get rid of it now.

How do we get the government and the people behind raising the minimum wage? It used to be that it kept up with inflation but that hasn't been the thing for AT LEAST 40 years!

It should taper down in parallel with the unemployment percentage going down, as businesses begin to reopen.

I think people took all that money and spent it on fireworks. Its still going on here.

OT I think they should cut it down but not off yet. The job market will be even harder.

Nahh. I've worked through this whole thing, i'll continue to work as normal.

I feel sorry for people who have lost their job or are unemployed but around here at least, most of those jobs were virgin jobs for uni students, not chad jobs for adults.

Yet again, those who sacrifice for work, spend responsibly and save, are going to carry the burden for people who spend their welfare on big TV,s TLOU2 and fireworks.

I don't feel like it's a sustainable thing, but I also believe the stimulus is keeping the economy alive.
Damned if ya do, damned if ya dont.

Because any time someone brings it up people scream "the left wants socialism!" and "there will be massive job loss!"

You can't necessarily have a blanket minimum wage since different areas of the country have different standards of living, but something has to be done. We need to recognize that the concept of a living wage is not partisan and we should want to pay people enough to not only get by (paying rent, bills, food, insurance) but also have individual economic power.
