Should I Buy a PSP today?

IntestineBoy

Sasquatch of 1000 (hairy) colons
I won 450 bucks last night at the casino, my second tournament ever, and I don't really have anything else I want, but I think I want a PSP.

Is there anywhere I can actually play with one and try it out? I haven't ever seen displays like the other systems at BBuy or CCity. But I have seen one playing a movie disc, and it impressed this skeptic.

So basically, I think I want one. I think I want to pick up Hot Shots golf and Wipeout for it. Good choices? I'm just going off reviews and what not. And how about memory sticks? Is it worth it to get a big one to put movies on? I can hold off on that for a few days at least.

I just want to walk out of the store with my PSP and one or two games, maybe a movie. The question is, will this born-n-raised Nintendo fan be disappointed?

I don't think you'll be dissapointed, but the games you mentioned get old pretty quick and the current library is pretty weak. If you buy one, make sure to snag a 1.50 version if you see one, it has the spider-man 2 sticker on it. At least then you can use homebrew and emu's on it.

wipeout pure and hot shots golf are very good choices. if you really are serious about watching movies on it, a 1gb stick is good. if you get a 1.50 psp and want homebrew stuff, you might want a bigger stick anyway, depending on what you want to do

do you really want to spend that much money on 2 games though?

Yes, seeing as how the entire lineup are sequels/spin-offs of PlayStation 2 franchises.

Stay true to your roots man, get a DS.

Well I doubt I will even get into the homebrew stuff. But I forgot about the Spiderman thing. Is it still in the packages? Or is it only in the ones denoted by the sticker?

only the ones with the stickers will have it, its getting rare to see em though..unless you live where I do and most of the psps in stores are still 1.50

The PSP was DOA. The only thing it's good for right now is the limited selection of UMD movies and a few emulators. Sony needs to get its act together on this one before I can say it's a good purchase.

Ignore it, get a DS if you want a new portable.

I've looked, and there aren't any games yet that scream to me "BUY A DS TO PLAY THIS". Online Mario Kart will do that however. I'll buy at that time I think. But until then... I mean... My N64 is dusted over in my closet, and I won't pay 150 bucks to play that again.

i cant say I wasted my money on my PSP, since I love owning the newest gadgets, but its been an underwhelming experience so far. there is simply not nearly enough games.

being a nintendo fan wouldn't disqualify you; being a narrow-minded triumphalist nintendo fan probably would. psp's release schedule looks bleak, but there's a lot of good stuff out there now: ridge racers, lumines, hot shots golf, wipeout, metal gear acid, star soldier if you're willing to import, the tremendously underrated mercury. the media functions are neat too.

Sure why not, but I don't recommend blindly following the advice of strangers on what you should spend ~$300 on. Investigate the matter on your own and check out the released games list and future lineup. See if there is any game (NOT movies) that genuinely interests you and plan around that. If you're into the modding scene you can possibly outfit your PSP with a whole slew of emulators which is essentially endless entertainment. However I don't know if the current systems still have the launch OS version. If you want to try the system head out to Best Buy and see if they still have any of those promo units to try out. I remember at launch each store at one PSP unit to show off to customers but you had to ask an employee to bring it out. Another avenue might be the gamestores such as EB/Gamestop. Around launch there was always an employee with a PSP unit or a demo unit.

Damn. When I say the PSP games out now are good but not amazing and that the future lineup pales in comparison to the DS's I get flamed to hell.

Anyhow, I agree with what the other people say.

It's nice-looking hardware that has some cool features to it and a handful of games out now are worth checking out, but the future lineup is nothing to get excited about, especially if you have a PS2 or any console for that matter.

The games part only you can answer. Do you enjoy the PS2 lineup? Realizing games coming out will probably be closer to those releases. And yes games are coming don't let fanboys tell you otherwise, this is still a sony console and it's only been a few months and summertime months at that. I and everyone else has given the DS a year to get its act together and you would think the same people crying out before to give the DS time would allow the PSP the same luxury before attacking it's library. Then again, its GAF :lol

Also keep in mind you are paying for it being a multimedia machine too so if you don't really plan on using any of those functions you might want to hold off till at least the holidays too see if there may be a price drop. If you are going to use it too it's fullest effect then get at least a 512 MB stick or order a 1gb stick online and get a good price.

Coming up for the holidays you got..

Burnout Legends
Socom
Xmen Legends II
SSX
Madden
Tokobot
Guilty Gear
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Battlefield Modern Combat
Virtua Tennis
GTA Liberty City Stories
Popolorois
LoTR Tactis

Those are just the ones i'm eyeing so you should head over to EBgames.com and see what you like coming out. Also if you aren't doing the homebrew scene you should get the 2.0 firmware upgrade so you can use the web browser, wallpaper feature and get the updated video and music playback.

If not for what's out now -- although there are some superb games like Mario 64 DS, Meteos, Polarium, Wario Ware Touched! -- then get a DS for the promise of what's to come. Nintendogs, Castlevania DS, a new Lunar, a new Mario Bros. (you said you're a Nintendo fan!), another Zelda, Trauma Center, Viewtiful Joe DS... The list goes on.

Yeah, the Mario/Zelda/Mario Kart games will sell the system for me. But not today I don't think. The more i read about the web browsing too, that's another big plus. I think today, my poker winnings will go for the PSP. The DS will live to see another day. Before it gets virtual boyed.

I think you've just about made up your mind when you made this thread, but I'll say that you'll probably be underwhelmed. Look well into the future releases, not what is just out because many people have gotten bored with most all of the PSP launch games. The PSP upcoming releases that people keep posting is pretty weak. (another LOTR game from EA, 4-player offline Battlefront, handheld versions of consoles games we see all the time, more racing games). A very few games like GTA and Burnout are carrying the weight of the PSP for the remainder of the year.

My suggestion is to compare what's coming for the PSP and what's coming for the DS (which I feel is much stronger than what PSP has coming).

someone have that chart with the markings of "Game Gear level failure," "Virtual Boy Level Failure," etc and the DS and PSP labeled accordingly?

DS will never get Virtual Boyed. Ever. Never ever ever ever. Never ever. Ever.

The PSP is missing a killer app and an appealing lineup, existing or up-coming, imho. But it's certainly has enough ok - decent content now, and inevitably WILL be getting some truly great titles in the future, this year or next. If the money's burning a whole in your pocket, now would be a good time.

You can scope out SKUs (or was it serial numbers?) and now which firmware comes on which package, and this may be close to your last chance to secure a homebrew ready v.1.50. I'd say, go for it.

For the last three months, the only game I've been playing on my GBA, is Tetris. 1989 original gameboy tetris. I've been playing it too much. I get 220 lines every time it seems like, and I need to get something new. I went looking for a new GBA game last week, and I didn't see anything in the stores that looked like something above the 8 year old demographic. I looked for the metroids, the mario & luigis, anything that might interest me. But nothing. And I basically see that in the DS line up right now. I don't need to play Mario 64 again, or draw cloud lines for mario to fall on, or whatever. I will get one for Mario Kart and the new Mario game probably later in the year.

For now though, some fun games on PSP will do me nicely. The web browsing, movie capability, and the prospects (I guess I'm thinking of GTA specifically) are fine too. I don't have a PS2, so these games will fit kind of nicely in my little collection I suppose. I'm not hard core enough for homebrew I don't think. I'll have to look for the boxes with Spiderman in them, that'd be nice to be able to get. But if not, I'll find something I suppose.

And there will be more poker money in the future, so this is just like buying a prize or something. If it was money I worked for, I'd save it like the one guy said.

I sincerely appreciate your guys' input and knowledge.

even better if you havent played the ports/sequels of the games that are on psp. those launch games (ridge racer/wipeout) and hot shots golf were practically the first time ive ever played these games and they are pretty fun. i dont even play my gba anymore, didnt play wario ware twisted as much as i wanted. i always believed in 1 handheld since i find it pointless in having multiple handhelds

doubt you'll find a launch psp with spider man 2, but if you want homebrew, you have to look at the sticker and it has to be labelled "A" or something...but you said you dont want homebrew so i guess that doesnt matter

Yeah, I just got off the phoen with a few stores and they say they havent seen the ones with Spiderman since the launch, so oh well. I have it on DVD anyway.

No, I believe he meant that he couldn't find those games that he does not consider to be for 8 year olds (such as the Metroids, Mario & Luigi, etc) in stock, when he went looking.

I hope that's what he meant, anyway.

Why the hell is it the mindset that won money should be parlayed right away? Just wait until it goes down in price--you don't need it.

I see... but those are easily available new/used at through Amazon.com vendors. The GBA Castlevanias, in particular Aria of Sorrow, are the only ones you won't find for decent prices online. They're a bit pricey.

Go ahead and buy one, get 1 gb stick download some movies/series/anime and your set for traveling. Its great to bust out my PSP at work and watch some anime/one tree hill at break. Its much more than a games system.

a 1.50 PSP is a Nintendo fan's wet dream...

buy a 1.50 PSP
and a nice sizes Memory Stick Pro Duo
then get emulators for NES, GBC, SNES
and be in pre-revolution heaven

:)

or maybe no virtual boy, heh

Get a PS2 already for fuck's sake.

Handheld Shmandheld.

Unless you've already got your mind fixated on the PSP. Then you might as well just get the fuckin thing. Neocd is nice atleast.

Every time you say this, I keep asking where my PS2 version of Lumines is.

Why don't you answer?

That's one *original* IP for the system... And I guess there's also that game Coded Arms. But that's pretty much it. And the same goes for Mercury.

Edit: And before some troll with flames in tow comes along, yes, I may be an avid Nintendo fan, but that's never stopped me from getting a competitor's system if something compelling comes along (which is why I have a PS2 and Xbox).

And Death Jr?
And Tenchi no Mon?

New establishments to franchises are also sorely missing. I'll buy a new Wipeout and (arcade style) Ridge Racer on PS2 on the drop of a hat. Not for a handheld, though.

:lol @ the people trying to get IntestineBoy to buy a DS instead. This thread would have sucked if you didn't interject.

Jesus Nintendo fans need to freaking chill out. He didn't ask about a DS, he didn't ask which one he should buy yet you all invade the thread, on cue. He made his choice now leave him alone.

I don't think you'll be disappointed as a nintendo fan, if you can get your hands on a PSP with 1.5 firmware. Try Target. You can emulate classic Nintendo systems pretty accurately. Hope you don't feel the same way about SNES and NES as you do for N64.

I hear Hot Shots Golf and Wipeout are excellent. I love Lumines. Ape Escape sucks a pair.

what's wrong with ape escape? i havent played it on psp...i assume the controls are a bit crappy since there's no dual analog, but are there any other stuff that makes it crappy?

Ape Escape is just fine. It controls very well and plays like Ape Escape. There is ONE major flaw, however, but that is EASILY corrected with a 1gb memory stick and a 1.50 PSP. Ripping the UMD to the memstick and playing it from there pretty much removes most of the loading.

I actually think the current lineup is EXTREMELY good for such a new system from a company invading a new market. There are a number of great games on the system along with plenty of good ones. The future lineup looks a bit bleak, unfortunately, but it really isn't as bad as peole make it out to be.

I've got Hot Shots, Lumines, Ridge Racer, and Metal Gear Acid and couldn't be any happier with the PSP, and highly suggest you pick one up. Also looking forward to Virtua Tennis, GTA, and Burnout. I'll pickup other launch titles like Tony Hawk and Wipeout once they are a little cheaper (or when I burn out on the games I own).

I've been underwhelmed so far. While Lumines is pretty damn good, the rest has been unappealing to me. I despise AC!D and I am a huge MGS fan, and I'm not too keen on racing games either. I would wait a while until an actual killer app comes out and pray that there would have been a price drop by then. You really don't need to spend that money immediately. I've kinda missed the money I've put into it so far, but I was pretty tight for money when I went ahead and bought the the thing.
