Should I watch the original Miami Vice?

Schattenjäger

I love the 80s and have this blu ray box set waiting to be opened
I know many of today’s stars had their start in this show + many awesome songs but is the show actually good?
Can I watch from start to end without being bored?

The first couple of seasons are good, but quality declines rapidly during the 4th and 5th seasons. The plots become really over the top, but not in an entertaining way.

Easy way to tell if you're in for a good time: the longer Crockett's mullet gets, the worse that episode will be.

Fuck yeah, it's Michael Mann. His whole style is just so satisfying to me.

I'd also highly recommend Thief with James Caan. That movie rules and it's way overlooked. Tangerine Dream soundtrack :messenger_dizzy:

Edit: Uhhh...Mann had nothing to do with the original show? I was somehow under the impression he did but looking at imdb...no??? Anyway, Brother's Keeper alone is worth it much like the Twin Peaks pilot.

Mann was executive producer for the first few seasons at least. So while he wasn't writing or directing episodes (or at least getting credit for such things) I think he left his mark on that show.

You’re German, right? Keep in mind that the regular blue rays only have the censored TV versions and aren’t enhanced with regards to image scaling and cleanup. The ultimate edition blue ray set has the full length episodes, but the additional material isn’t dubbed so you’ll have a mix of German and English voices. That set does let you watch the TV versions though. But it costs €180, mind you.

You will likely binge the first three seasons as they have personality and keep switching things up, but season 4 will take you forever to get through as it doesn't know what it wants to be. Season 5 will start amazing with a major plot twist, but near the end the attempts at promoting spin-offs that never came to be will likely be a major turn off unless you are the curious type.

I think Magnum P.I. is more consistent.

That explains it. I thought I remembered watching some "best sequences in television" thing and they showed that amazing Phil Collins car ride and someone brought it up as a "Mann sequence".

It's cheesy fun. The musician and actor cameos are really cool and the music both original and licensed are iconic.

I watched the first episode years ago and it was great. Everyone says it's like a movie and they are right. That opening is iconic with the music.

Maybe a little played out now but it's cause it's been copied and parodied alot

It is a cool cop show in the 80s. It was good then. Good shows are still good even if they are old. I still like watching Andy Griffith. A cop show in the 50s.

At least watch the pilot, it's great. The last seasons aren't so good but they're still watchable and I'd say better than most of the modern cop shows.

You ever listen to Redshift?

very similar stuff from the late 90s.
I had not but now I'm about 8 minutes into "subEther" and I'm close to climax. Thank you, Sir. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I just listened to Global Communication - 76:14 earlier today if you haven't heard that one. It's great stuff, not exactly 1:1 Tangerine but anyway.
