Should Namco make an original Ridge Racer game for the DS?

I'd personally love to see an entirely fresh RR game, at least up-to-par with R4 visually on the DS. New music, new cars, new story, etc. The visuals would be custom built for the DS, as opposed to a half-assed sloppy port of an already aging build. Plus, throw in some 8-player single-cart wirless, custom decal editor and some other options and it would be the DS' true racing gem. Hell, put in an awesome waiting room with the PictoChat features, some mic options for trash talking and of course true wi-fi play.

I've just experienced a recent excitement for the series again thanks to PSP Ridge Racers and even RRDS. I hope Namco plans to really craft an original and compelling title for the DS out of this series. Hell if they can't even create an original game, how about Rage Racer 2? More of the dramatic RPG mode, and the awesome customizable cars. Plus they could really try to perfect the touch screen steering, as well as the D-pad steering, to better suit the system.

Not really.

I mean, if you want a portable Ridge Racer, the PSP game offers everything you could need. It would be smarter to make a sequel on the PSP than on the DS. Superior visuals, superior audio, superior control, etc. The DS doesn't offer anything over PSP that would benefit Ridge Racer. I would prefer if developers concentrated on REALLY using the DS properly rather than trying to replicate the experience you get on other systems.

I would prefer, however, a new console Ridge Racer game. The PSP game seems absolutely amazing, so there really is no reason to make another portable RR game for a while. A new console installment would absolutely rock, though!

I agree. I would love to see Namco take their time and really present us with a new RR game in the coming years. But with the DS RR I could imagine microphone function, as well as chatrooms before and after races while the host sets up the next game. Same with the Decal Editor. It's much more intuitive to draw your designs with the stylus, instead of with the control pad. But really I guess any new RR game is good for me.

It's funny because R: Racing Evolution was originally intended to be GameCube only. I wonder how much of the multiconsole porting hurt its development into a shitty game, if at all?
 
No, for portable Ridge Racer I'd like to see a sequel to Ridge Racers that supports custom soundtracks from the memory stick. :D

If Nintendo went third party they could make Mario Kart on the PSP with a level editor like in F-Zero for the 64DD. You can then trade tracks either online or copy them to memory sticks and transport them that way. :D

Well, we KNOW that couldn't happen, but technically, Mario Kart would benefit from the PSP. I'd imagine they could pull off visuals nearly on par with Double Dash (lower poly models, but everything else should remain in tact as DD wasn't really all that impressive by GC standards).

The models in DD are pretty low poly as it is, I think they could do an almost perfect port of it to the PSP.
 
No. Namcos development dollars are better spent for a system thats #1, more powerful and #2 a more appreciative and mature userbase.
 
Put the next Ridge Racer on the PS2 [or PS3], please. I don't play my games outside of my home much, so fuck the PSP. And no DS version could have an advantage over the PSP, so fuck the DS.
 
No, the HUD would be way too cumbersome with MK on the psp.. On the DS you just stick the hud on the bottom screen.

Then again they could cut a bit on the sides of the psp.

Ridge Racers DS Features:
-Wi-Fi with live chatting between players via mic druing races
-Chat rooms for drawing, or messaging players before and after races
-Make custom decals and trade them between units using touchscreen
-New revised touchscreen and D-pad controls
-All new story mode following the events of Rage Racer
-Wireless 8-player VS, 2-player Tourny (co-op)
 
You could probably do a very nice RR game on the DS. But the question is: Would it be really worth it? I like the ability to download the game to 7 other DS's for one-cart multiplay...

FYI, RRDS is not coming out in Japan.

Well, after exposing the Japanese consumers to Ridge Racers first, it's probably for the best.
 
They should make a Ridge Racer on DS that allow us to map out a race course with the stylus. That would be an advantage over PSP.
 
And be able to draw designs for the banners and billboards around the track. Hell, if they can make a track editor for the GBA F-Zero, then they can do it on the DS Ridge Racer.

The PSP screen is 16:9, though, so I don't think HUD elements would be a problem.

"Serious" racers aren't a very good fit for the DS. F-Zero, sure. Mario Kart, sure. But I see no point in having a Ridge Racer game on the system. Of course, I don't see the point in having a Ridge Racer game on any system.

You're assuming it is also online capable too, right? Those features aren't quite as great when the other player is sitting 10ft away...
 
I still wouldn't mind a full Rave Racer port (maybe throw in the Rage Racer cars/tracks)... but only if Namco CT does it themselves. No more of this NST nonsense.

It's not worth the resources probably, on either DS or PSP. We'll be getting RR6 for PS3 launch anyway, handhelds are better suited to revised ports and compilations thanks to lower development costs and softer game sales.
