Should we create a PC subforum inside Gaming Discussion?

The quality of gaming discussion has severely decreased due to accusation of fanboy-ism and attempts to control narratives through distorted lenses. I would like to discuss gaming topics without having to wade through a deluge of pro/anti-Sony and pro/anti-Microsoft propaganda. It makes it difficult to separate the signal from the noise, and there is TONS of noise. A PC Gaming subforum will still target the core/enthusiast group of PC gamers and PC+console gamers who would like to discuss PC gaming (obviously) and discuss console gaming more objectively.

No. There are already plenty of PC gaming communities out there if that's all you want to focus on. I prefer not splitting the community any further and think the the current number of forums is just right for the activity level (although right now Communities is rather dead).

no because it never occurs to me to check Communities and I'll miss all the PC talk

I think things will calm down a bit once both consoles are out.

Not even sure why people console war so hard. I could see if the people arguing were kids and their parents could only buy them one. Most of us are older now and can buy whichever plastic boxes we want so I'm not sure why people feel the need to defend or attack one company.

You could probably start a PC gaming OT like the Nintendo one. Not sure if a whole forum would work.

FFXIV has a whopping 4 pages of discussion despite being the second most successful MMO of all time. There is no post or discussion about the soon to be released 5.3 patch. That "community" is nonexistent on NeoGAF.

Wheres the DOTA2 community? League of Legends? Path of Exile? Rimworld? CSGO? Kerbal Space Progam? Obscure non-console games like Among Us or publishers like Zachtronics? Non-steam games like Industries of Titan? Skyrim modding? Witcher 3 modding? GTA5 modding? What if we want to talk about the best PC settings for a game? How about IPS vs VA monitors and the best gaming monitors at specific price points?

The point of splitting the community as proposed is to better cater to different types of people. For instance, I think console gamers value convenience over customizability, and vice versa for pc gamers. This means that they have different technical and logistical problems. There's no reason to think that their value systems may not be different in other ways as well. Secondly, if people migrating to this PC subforum significantly decreases the quality of the discussion in the Gaming Discussion forum then that means that those contributing to that quality discussion made the choice to engage in an improved community, i.e., you're forcing people to engage in a place that is of a lower quality than they should need to or, worst of all, not engage at all.

I have no problem participating in console+pc gaming forums when the participants are primarily pc gamers. But participating in console+pc gaming forums when the participants are not primarily pc gamers is a different beast.

Personally I would be for it, but having too many sub-forums is probably a bad idea. Using something like the tags to easily filter threads would be good. Like maybe if there was a drop-down in the Gaming forum to quickly filter topics by platform.

I wish there were sub forums for all the major systems. The forum is almost unusable at the moment, just fanboy wars and Halo trolling. I wouldnt mind as much if the trolling and memes were kept to Halo threads, but you cant discuss anyhing Xbox related now withought memes, trolling and pics of that brute.
I'm really surprised the mods are allowing it to happen.

What's are the differences among TN, IPS, and VA monitors for gaming? Should you buy an OLED display for desktop use? What's the suggested frequency of DDR4 ram for gaming on Ryzen processors? If you're gonna turn on 1 RTX setting for Control do you choose global reflections or indirect diffuse lighting?

These are decisions that a console gamer does not want to deal with. These are decisions that a pc gamer has to deal with and many pc gamers are fine with it in the end because pc gaming offers us choice. There are fundamental differences in what and how pc gamers like to game.

I see your point. I'd love an active FFXIV community in which to participate.

I just think our overall activity is maybe 1/5 or 1/10 of what it needs to be to have such a rich variety of vibrant and active niche communities. We're getting there, though. This place is buzzing compared to even just a year ago and I don't see the growth stopping.

PC gaming specific? Not necessarily, but I still want a TechGAF subforum for talking about silicon & tech news without threads getting buried so quickly. Sometimes threads are not a good fit for the gaming forum and in off topic they tend to get buried under the foot worship and escort escapade threads (welcome back ED!). So yeah, expand the scope a bit to include a bit more to be worthwhile.

We do kinda have the PC build advice thread: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/i-ne...tracing-120hz-360hz-next-gen-already.1520520/ but it is limited.

Microsoft is multi-platform, making a PC-only space would be kind of silly unless your real goal was to make a Sony/Nintendo only section. ;)

It would not be PC-only. It would be for gamers who are primarily PC gamers. But PC gamers own consoles too.

So maybe 1 Sony thread, 1 Microsoft, 1 Nintendo thread in the PC subforum. And absolutely no fanboy talk or dismissing content due to accusations of fanboy-ism (see people accusing Alex of making excuses for Halo Infinite). Just PC folk talking about console exclusives and hardware. Or maybe just 1 thread for all 3 brands.
I think this and the limited discussion in the FFXIV community indicates that PC gamers go elsewhere to discuss these topics. Maybe because these discussions are fragmented on GAF and we don’t really care about Sony v Microsoft.

I meant that the scope of the info in that thread is limited. It isn't really for sharing news, as much as it is getting & giving build advice. A lot of members don't know it exists and just post their own thread. That said, since the whole split thing happened a lot of the community/long threads have yet to really recover - or at least the ones I look(ed) at.

What you are really asking for is a bunch of dead threads. For all the crying and moaning from PC people here, their threads are almost always less active than Sony/MS threads

if you want to talk about these issues so badly, make threads about them. Bump the FFXIV thread. Honestly this just comes off as whining

I'd be all for it but I don't think there are currently enough PC gamers here to support it.

I don't think it needs to be a PC subforum. Just a "games discussion ONLY" subforum. It's ok to discuss exclusives, but just keep fanboy console war politics out of it.

Nah, mods just need to start hitting the fanboys who feel the need to turn their personal insecurity into topics.

No, we just need a thread we can all gather in. Care to make one OP?

Agreed, do a PC gaming OT if there isn't one already and cry in there

You don't need a separate board for any of these to exist

By that logic removing the Politics forum for a Politics GAF in the community section would be acceptable.
The Politics sub forum is there to compartmentalize that stuff away from off-topic. The equivalent would be to have a system wars type subforum in gaming to clean up the main gaming forum.

Yeah, we need a specific place to discuss the superiority of the PC running console game ports to get away from the console kiddies discussing the times when their console has superiority over the other console. Like adults! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

No, don't separate PC talk from console talk. Especially now with 2 out of 3 big consoles being as close to PC gaming as never before in the past.

You add too many playlists to a shooter, and the community gets spread thin. Same thing happens to forums. 4 discussion forums are enough imo.
