Okay, OT Gaffers, it's the moment you've all been waiting for - The 2004 GAMING-AGE FALL INTO WINTER MIX EXCHANGE. That's right, it's a chance to (show off to/torture) your fellow forum users with your music tastes and the ability to create one sweet mix.

Last time during the SUMMER MIX EXCHANGE we tried out a digital group that worked really well. I'd like to push for more people using the digital method as it saves on shipping costs for everyone (this is more of an issue for those on limited incomes, as well as overseas forum goers). I'm going to be offering up my hosting accounts for anyone who'd like to use the digital method. It's got 25GB of transfer a month and 2GB of free space, so we shouldn't run into any problems. If we do, I have another account with 40GB of transfer a month and a gig of free space. You can feel free to do it the old fashion way if you wish, and I'll make every effort to make sure those who are found of actually sending and receiving burns will get to do just that.

Here's what you need to do to get involved:

1. Post in the thread - Let everyone know you're gonna be involved!
2. Send an email to agentdormer@gmail.com with the following: Your name, forum name, username/pass for an FTP account, preference (digital/classic), musical tastes, and five of your favorite CDs this year. - I'll try to match people up into groups that have similar tastes, but not enough where their mixes will include all of the same songs.
3. Check to see your name in the top post as part of the mix exchange - If it takes more than a day, send me a PM or post in the thread. I may have missed your email (I do not intend for this to happen, though!)
4. Wait for dates - I figure that by next Friday we should have all the groups together, with mixes due at the latest by Christmas. That way it's out of the way before the New Year. If you have problems with the timetable, please don't hesitate to let us know. We understand.
5. Listen, Review - Crucial steps that tend to get overlooked. I’ll probably end up turning away those who want hosting for future mixes for noncompliance with this step. Each poster works hard on their mix (I think), and some input for the time they spent on it seems fair. Even if it's just 100 words or a song or two you want to write about, acknowledge the time spent on the mix by its creator.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I'll do it again....but since I didn't get my mixes, I'll go with Digital...Also, with Digital you're not restricted to the groups, as potentially everyone can access them. Thanks for the hosting.

Yo! I'm in. I'm not too sure how to make digital work(remember, I'm drunk all the time), but since everyone else is doing it I spose I will too.

I'm mostly a lurker but I love a lot of GAFs musical tastes and hopefully I can turn them onto a band I love too. +1 digital too :)

I would like to participate. I'm up for either kind of exchange, though it's looking like it will all be digital this year.

Also, one recommendation to that email the participants send in. Should we include bands that we are interested in hearing? That could possibly make it easier to make groups, not to mention knowing what would be good to add to your mix. It's always difficult to tell whether or not your group has heard the bands you have on the mix, if you're introducing them to something new or not. Whether you add this or not I'm definately in though.

Given that there are some GAF members on the RIAA payroll, I'd be careful if I were you.

Oh, I thought just the ESA guys were here....Anyway, isn't it the same if you send a CD, or download a mix...either way it could potentially have music that wasn't paid for.

i'm not going to do a snail mail. i'd rather we each put our mixes on a secure space and do it digital. that way we're not out the reciprocation when people inevitably flake.

as for dj demon j and coworkers, he's participated in the mix exchange before. i think as long as we make an effort to secure our exchange, we're good to go.

My mix is almost ready (playing around w/ track order and trying to track down a couple CDs) whenever this is.

Well, I'm in Australia... digital is the only way I and most other non US people can do this without going broke, which is nice. :)

If it's digital, why should we be confined to each other's mixes? I think the participants should be allowed to choose from the "pool" of mixes, if you will.

I just want to make sure people get their mixes reviewed. But people can feel free to download the other mixes (the same thing happened last time).

Yeah it would be cool if say two people have the "responsibility" of writing a review for each mix and then can listen to everything else and make comments here about songs they like.

Well, I'm not in if it's digital. It sort of defeats the purpose of the thing.
I'm still going to do the digital mix with whatever group I get, but if you're willing, you and I and whoever else wants to can do a traditional exchange as well. I want to stick with my digital group, but something about doing it with the mail and such makes it just that much more special. I think we have fairly similar tastes in music so it could work out.

I'd like to do a traditional CD-R swap, too, if there are a few others who are up for it. I can't do digital.

Can't do digital. And as much as I would love to participate in this, I wouldn't get stuff out until far into January or early February. I didn't totally enjoy my experience with the last exchange either. :-\ So I guess I'm out for this season...although if someone still wants to send me stuff, I would gladly review it.

i'd actually be in for an actual physical mix too, but it seems like everyone wants digital, and it'd be easier.

so if there's a physical mix exchange, put me down for that, and if there's not, i'm in for digital too.

Why even bother finding hosting if you are going to do digital exchange? Just post a song list and a link to the Soulseek client software. I thought the point of all this was the feeling of having a custom-created, physical object that someone took a little bit of time and thought to create for you.

Well then don't do it. There are quite a few people here who are willing to send CDs. Obviously enough people see the benefit that more people are excited about doing it than any physical exchange. If there's enough people to do it each way there's no reason to talk shit about the other method. I've already spent quite a bit of time putting a mix together even though I'm doing digital so it's not like the digital people aren't putting any thought into this. Also, several of my songs you would either NOT find on soulseek (most of the time) or it you'd have to wait for the 350 people in front of you to finish dl'ing from the one person who has the song. And that's just for starters, but already good enough reasons that the songlist method sucks if there's an alternative.
