A depressive story doesn't make it for all the oozing atmosphere of the original and arguably better gameplay and no doubt about it miles better pacing.

SH2 on the other hand looks beautiful. These shadows made the game so much more atmospheric. I think it was the first game i ever saw that had real time shadow like that.

Well as a parent i can relate more to the horror of losing your daughter in a town full of monsters than to the storyof SH2.
I think objectively 2 is the better game, but we wouldn't have 2 without the success of 1.
That said i'm more concerned people forget 3 exists. The best of the trilogy.

Totally agree. SH 2 is godlike, don't get me wrong but there is a very "occult" and "high strangeness" vibe in the first one that's missing from 2.

Lol no. The characters in silent hill 2 are have really interesting stories as to why they are there. The twist at the end for James. The final scene in the graveyard. Arguably pyramid head. The soundtrack. And obviosuly graphics. Silent hill 2 is better. Silent hill is amazing. I love it. 2 is better though.

If SH1 was built to the same standard as SH2 I think it'd be the better game. However, the strides made between the two in all dimensions of execution make SH2 the better game all-round.

The only real knock against SH2 is that its a total mood-piece and not as aggressively scary as the original

Silent Hill 2 may be superior in terms of writing and character depth as Youtubers love to point out, but it's not even close in terms of intimidation and survival horror. What made the first game terrifying was large in part due to the PS1's limited hardware and sound design, plus the fact that most of it takes place during the night instead of day. Some of the imagery in Silent Hill 1 is messed up:

The mid plot twist with Lisa in the original > characters from SH2.

They boiled down every line to the same backstory in 2, every character dealing with their twisted past, nothing else.

Pyramid Head won't argue, it's the most iconic character from the series (maybe nurses?), but even then, most people don't understand what his appearance was supposed to be.

It's a shame that the game had many glaring faults though. It had the potential to be something great, but it's still one of my favorites nevertheless.

Well that ain't an opinion then.
I'd make them play those two games till the end of their lives.
And i liked Downpour, but as a "10 buck game played super high in 3D on my Xbox, but surely not a Silent Hill game, the boxart and main menu must be wrong" type of game.
Seriously, otherworld in 3D was fucking bonkers.

I agree. SH1 is pure horror while SH2 is more drama. It also pushed PS1 to its limits with great 3D graphics and semi-open environments for the time, and had a better cast of characters.
