Aww man, I'm meant to be picking this up tomorrow (from the UK), been watching all the streams and so desperately want to play, I just keep thinking, maybe I'll get lucky and be able to play.... but then reading all these posts about server issues, they just seem to be getting even worse!
Now they've disabled achievements and leaderboards.. what next? So conflicted...

When you click your population total at the bottom of the screen, it brings up a menu which breaks that stuff down.

First day: people came home and as expected the european server bombed hard.
Is better go to sleep early and wake up at 4:00 A.M for some smooth gameplay.
We are continuing to do everything we can to address the server issues. In the meantime, so that we can give you as good an experience as possible, we are in the process of deploying a hotfix to all servers. This includes various improvements and also disables a few non-critical gameplay features (leaderboards, achievements and region filters). Disabling these features will in no way affect your core gameplay experience.
We will continue to let you know as we have more information. We know it has been said before, but we do appreciate your patience as we complete this latest update. Getting you playing is our absolute highest priority.

* Fix for crash caused most commonly occurring on servers experiencing lag. This crash would happen most often when claiming a new city when playing in a region.
* Fix for server select dialog not appearing on start-up if the server the player was last on is not available.
* Disabled Cheetah speed. Cheetah speed is is now the same as llama speed.
* Crash fix for finding closest points.
* Crash fixes in transport and pedestrian code.
* A fix cities having processing problems associated with helicopters.

Eh, it'll be great in a week. I switched my purchase from Tomb Raider to this at the last minute, and despite the server issues I'm glad I did. TR is a play it once, forget about it type of game for me, and already I've gotten more game time from SimCity than I would have from Tomb Raider.God I feel embarrassed for getting this game at launch over Tomb Raider. Yeah... damn, I don't have the game but did actually enjoy the beta. I figured there would be some problems with launch but didn't think it would be as bad as it looks like it is right now. This just looks like a disaster right at the same level as Diablo 3.
Oh great. Half the time spent in the game is waiting for money to accumulate.
