Simpsons episodes from the classic era that you're not a fan of? (Mmm, sacrilicious!)

Let's be blasphemous together, shall we? None of the episodes I list here I actually hate or anything, I just think they pale in comparison with the god tier standards of the golden Simpsons years.

Bart's Inner Child. The first act of this episode I actually find laugh out loud hilarious, everything surrounding the trampoline is comic gold, but then the main plot enters the picture and I'm not laughing anywhere as much. It loses steam, I can see what they were going for with the drier approach and there's still noteworthy gags here and there, but eeeeh, it doesn't do much for me. The very final scene is a laugh-free way to wrap things up as well.

Fear of Flying. I can't actually pinpoint why this one doesn't work as well for me, I just know that the last time I rewatched it (couple months ago) I had a lukewarm reception to it...Eh, perhaps a rewatch will change that.

The Canine Mutiny. A so-so, surprisingly-thin-for-the-era episode surrounded by pure classics. The ending with Wiggum and Lou singing Bob Marley's Jamming is one for the books, though.

Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala-D'ohcious. It's funnier in theory than I actually find it to be in execution, it's alright. Amazing ending though.

Those are the ones I thought off the top of my head, what are yours? I predict Homer's Enemy and My Sister My Sitter are gonna be frequently named here...To which I say, the former is one of my all time favorites, and the latter I haven't rewatched in a while but don't recall harboring any dislike toward it.

I actually love Canine Mutiny, there's a lot of great character development for Bart who you genuinely feel for when he gives away SLH.

All of season 1

Well..yes.

I also didn't like Hurricane Neddy, even if some bits are quotable ('I'm Dick Tracy! Take that, Pruneface! Now I'm Pruneface! Take that, Dick Tracy! Now I'm Prune Tracy! Take that, D--'). Might actually because for years, seemed like the episode I see when I catch a re-run.

I definitely didn't like Principal and the Pauper, seems like a total waste based on how it ended. Edit: Beaten

I'm gonna have to rewatch that in the future. You reminded me of another episode from that season I'm not too hot on, added to OP.

There's honestly isn't an episode from Seasons 1-8 that I don't find at least enjoyable.

Well yeah, I'd watch all of those episodes (and most if not all of season 9) again no problem. There's just some that I don't think, bring as much to the table as the norm.

I actually find season 1 fascinating. Homer's Night Out may have too saccharine an ending but aside from that it's good times all around, in different ways to the rest of the series.

Season 9 episodes barely count as "classic" in my opinion.

Having said that, the only episode I immediately skip or turn off is Marge be not Proud.

I hate Christmas episodes of anything, for the most part, and everything about this one just annoys me.

except Thrillho

I guess if we're talking about really early stuff I can't stand Dead Putting Society purely because of how much of a douche Homer is in that one.

How did you like When Flanders Failed? Homer is downright heartless in that one, taking advantage of an increasingly more desperate Flanders, only softening when things can't get any direst. He does make up for it, in an ending that's too mushy for my taste; still a great episode overall IMO.

It may be one of my favorite endings in the whole series. I know those are big words but Jesus it's perfect.

The one where Bart shoplifts. THRILLHO is the only good thing, the rest is just kind of uncomfortable.

Buy Me Bonestorm or Go To Hell!

Ah...there's some funny stuff in that episode. When the mall security guard is "talking to Marge and/or Homer", but it turns out to just be the answering machine. That was pretty well played.

I'd argue the first Side Show Bob episode is not great, and in fact the Selma one and the one where Bob runs for Mayor might be the only two good SSB episodes.

Marge Be Not Proud and A Fish Called Selma are a couple of the episodes of I dislike. Not terrible but I did skip them when I marathoned through the series.

Side Show Bob and Cecil is a great episode. The Frasier puns work perfectly and David Hyde Pierce does a great job with the character. The "Maris?" line is genius, even if limited to the Frasier audience.

I mean I know someone that doesn't like Marge Vs. The Monorail.

There are certainly people that dislike classic era stuff.

I just think they're all weirdo's.

Probably Lisa the Vegetarian.

It has a lot of great gags, but it was the inception of asshole, super politically correct Lisa, which for me, ruined the character.

For some reason I mind that one less, only because it seems like Homer gains his humanity back by the end compared to Dead Putting Society where he's just a dick for the sake of it and he doesn't really learn anything.

A Fish Called Selma is a top 5 episode for me. How can anyone dislike the Planet of The Apes musical?

I've never liked the episode where Lisa babysits Bart and he hurts himself on purpose just to give her shit. Hit a bit too close to home for me.

Old Money and Bart's Dog Gets An F are episodes I tend to skip. I wouldn't call them bad episodes, but neither have any amazing stand-out jokes I can recall.

It's a great episode, but in perspective, that was the point when Lisa changed from a nerdy but cool little girl to straight annoying.

I think the episode is fantastic but I agree with that. Lisa episodes became notorious for a reason following this...

I think Lisa episodes becoming infamous also coincided with the shows downward spiral. Remember, Lisa the Vegetarian happened in Season 7, there was only one season after that before the entire cast turned into awful harping shrill character traits.

The Principal and the Pauper is probably "classic era" and it's still fucking garbage twenty years later

Season 9 is the cut off point for me. By season 8 the cynicism was already deeply entrenched. It's fitting that it's one of the last episodes of its production run.

OT: Two episodes that stuck in my mind as completely skippable are Simpson & Son Revitalizing Tonic and Bart's Inner Child. I never think about these episodes in retrospect.

Grandpa vs Sexual Inadequacy has too many great moments to be skippable for me. Specifically, I'm thinking of the 'reverse vampires' and Homer getting punched when he walks up to a man and says 'now, you look like a man who has trouble pleasing his wife!'.

I think most people cut off at Season 8 as "classic" as that is when most of the writing crew and producers turned over.

I think 9-12 are overall solid seasons, but it was definitely the first signs of trouble. And Principal and the Pauper is the episode I think most people point to as the first absolute trash episode of the show.

Ironically, it was a season 8 episode that was held over, and probably never should have aired.

I like that episode, but I think it's vastly overrated compared to other great episodes. I wouldn't put it in my top 15.

Oh yup, that's what its called. Shows how much I care about the episode! I should give it another shot. I usually like Grandpa centric eps.

My Sister, My Sitter is a low point for me in Classic Simpsons.

Bart is just such an irredeemable little shit in that episode, and to top it off, he basically gets away with it. Ruins the episode for me.

Though it has its moments.
