Just as the sixteenth season of the hit animated comedy returns to screens, Entertainment Weekly spoke with executive producer Al Jean who updated us on the long awaited and much speculated movie:

Jean confirms the writers are planning and working on the proposed feature film and have targeted a 2008 release date. There's already some possible plotlines having been considered, but they don't plan to spoil anything this early.

"There are a couple things on the show that I steered away from what might be in the movie. The biggest thing is you don't want to do a movie that's not reflective of the quality of the show, and you don't want the quality of the show to slip because you're doing the movie. So we're taking a little time" said Jean.

and you don't want the quality of the show to slip because you're doing the movie.

You also forgot to make bold this portion of the text.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
You know, there are a lot of animated projects over the next four years that I'm really excited about, but there are also a lot I have no interest in. As of now, this falls into the latter category.

If this was a super spectacular end of series finale to end all finales then I would be interested....

Ah hell no Simpsons Movie is worth it without Phil Hartman.

In my mind, The Simpsons is the greatest television show ever. So it's been incredibly disappointing to watch it become, at best, above average. I'd like to think that a movie would have the same care put into it (if that's the problem) as earlier seasons did.

Maybe, but a lot of the great writers from the show's earlier years are gone, and I don't think many people see evidence of others taking their places, either on the show or for this movie.

I remember reading that when they do get around to releasing the movie, that it will mark the end of the series on TV.

So I guess 4 more years of this wounded mule on Fox.

I look forward to the movie though. That'd be sweet if they brought back some of the good writers like Conan.

I always thought they could've taken the "Who Shot Mr Burns" episode, extended it 40 minutes (could include a bit of the 'Springfield Most Wanted' special they had when they first showed the second part) and made a good Simpsons movie.
