So Sin City comes out on DVD August 16th
Which one are you going to get?

For sure I'm going to get the cover with Jessica Alba (most likely be the top selling one)
If I can't find that one then my second choice is Rosario Dawson.
(Images look crappy cuz I couldn't find any better images)

i'll probably go for Jackie

Agreed. Stripped down, feature-less DVDs are for morons.

i would too, but im STILL fucking waiting for the Kill Bill re-release. Im not doing that again. I need me some Sin City. Besides, if the sequel really is coming out in summer '06, thats when the extended cut will probably hit. By then i can sell this one, or keep it if the extended is different enough.

One of the first three. This is a shitty ca$h grab. I don't like it. :(

Hardigan or Marv, though, fo' realz.

I was going to get the Alba cover, but after I rented it early from work I decided it's absolutely not worth my money. Sin City is an awesome movie, but it's a load of shit that they're giving you absolutely nothing but the movie. The behind the scenes featurette is more like a promo for the movie than a real behind-the-scenes feature. The DVD menu is awesome and the movie is fantastic but at this point it's not worth buying DVDs with this little. They'll eventually release an extended/deluxe/whatever edition, I'll wait for it.

such bullshit on both Kill Bill and Sin City extended cuts. Why the hell do these overhyped directors talk about shit they'll never get on. QT kept saying "it's one movie and we'll do that with some cool special features.." whatever. Meanwhile, first info on Sin City had Robert saying each divided chapters, more footage, etc. Complete immortalizing of Sin City, like he did for the theatrical cut in every shot. Instead lot of advertising and a pure bare bones release. Ridiculous. It's sure to come out Summer 06 too, the better one. Wrong for the fact that I can't wait that long and I'll have nothing to do with this shell once I get the other. Just burning $15. What a bastard move.

Because the studio has final say on what DVDs to put out.

Holy crap, I didn't even know there were making several different covers. I pre-ordered my copy from Suncoast, so who knows which one they end up saving for me. First choice is the montage of all the characters, second would be the one with Rosario Dawson.

I feel ashamed. I know this is another barebones dvd release like Kill Bill, but I still need to pick this up. I just don't feel like waiting around for the extended edition this time...of course I'll feel very stupid when I pick up the EE and have no use for my old copy of Sin City. :lol

I'd take the Clive/Rosario one, but I would probably only get this watered down DVD if someone had a ridiculous sale, and then who knows what would be available

I must be the only person who buys DVDs for the actual movie on them anymore. Everyone else seems to care about the lame extra features they put on DVDs these days.

They said the DVD release will have more scenes to each story. People are upset because it's not the complete movie (It's what we got on cinema. Not bad but they promised more).

I don't think I've ever watched a bonus feature :lol.

I'm more concerned about "extended cuts" than extra features.

EDIT: Didn't see flsh's post

is there any confirmed info or dates for a more robust DVD release of Sin City?

I might pick this one up anyways. Sometimes special editions that pack in the extras will cut things out like a DTS track, or downgrading the picture quality to get all the extra crap on there. I will enjoy having just the film, if its a reference quality disc.

I'll get the first one.
Waiting for pointless extras is for idiots.

We're so sorry for having a deeper interest in movies than you.

Hey, just saying if "buying the barebones version is moronic" than so is waiting for the special edition. Dear god, commentary? I sure love to hear these people talking. Wait. No. Fuck that. 99% of dvd extras are bullshit, and I bet you're not gonna be getting much by waiting on it. Hence, my argument is mocking those who buy it and live without said bullshit ain't as dumb as you'd like to think.

I could care less about commentary (the only commentary I've ever listened to is some of the Family Guys ones), but I'm holding out for the deleted/extended scenes.

You know I think those are even more bullshit than the commentary. Half the time you have to watch them outside of the movie itself. Extended scenes? Awesome! Watching them out of the flow of the movie? Bullshit. And with many of the "deleted/extended scenes" I've seen most are so insignificant that you hardly notice.
*refills bottle of haterade*

I'll be getting the one with most of the cast or the Marv one. Either one's fine. I'd just like to see the movie without people sitting around me complaining it's too violent (which happened to me when I saw it in the theater.) When the extended version comes out, I'll snag it too.

I alwasy watch the Documentaries they have on the movies. They're usually very cool, especially for more recent movies where they document it better. I like finding how they solve a problem that comes up. Seeing stuff like the LOTR sets was fantastic. I bought the Hellboy 3 disc set and it's filled with stuff like this [Like how they would have Hellboy jump ontop of a truck, and then jump back down in one take].

Sin City would have had a really cool documentary because there were almost never any 'sets'. It's all done by computers. The small look through Rodreigez's house from the OUATIM DVD was ace. He's got so much awesome equiptment in his house, showing how they would get rid of wires and all that kind of crap.

I would buy the Super Rosario Dawson cover, even if Mickey Rourke ruled this movie; I ain't interested in sticking my mini man meats in him. Super Rosario Dawson all the way!

Unfortunately, all my money is going to Thundercats Vol.1 so I'll wait for a price drop, and or special edition version of Sin City before taking the plunge. The movie fucking rocked, and I want to own a copy; but I'm not taking it up the ass for Hollywood studios.

I'll buy this since I never got around to seeing it in the theater and my fiance really wants to see it as well. Just like Dodgeball and Memento, though, I will buy the definitive version later on too and just trade this one in.

The extended version will have Rodriguez's lessons in film making or something like that...And I know the Quentin Tarintino Behind the Scenes stuff is supposed to be on one of the DVDs, but I'm not sure which one, because this one DOES have Behind the Scenes features.

Anyhow, I'll be picking up both the DVD and UMD on August 16th. :)

So is subsidizing the cost for the good edition.

The first week of any DVD release, you're bound to find it for about $15 or so somewhere, and then 90% of the time can coupon/discount your ass down to $12 or so somehow. Given the ticket price of movies, that's well worth it for a DVD. And like I said, if you guys want to wait months to see a scene of Merv farting or some shit, be my guest. To tell me its better to wait to rewatch a movie, because I'll be able to listen to the director and actors talk about shit? Fuck that. I don't watch their movies to hear them mumble about shit. I want to watch the fucking movie.

Thank you, finally somebody speaking my language. I buy DVDs for the movies on them. Not to listen to the people that made them. In Sin City's case it might be interesting to see some behind the scenes stuff, but the movie is so amazing, that discarding the idea of buying this movie when it first comes out is somewhat ridiculous in my mind.

The real dvd should be awesome. Full chapters, extended cuts, and a bunch of cool shit. Don't forget about it. Check out this interview.

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/641/641160p1.html

IGN: Has DVD become a director's new best friend?
Rodriguez: Yeah. I mean, I think it's just the way you can perceive how entertainment is viewed, not just for DVDs but future HD DVDs and all of the extra things you can put on them. When I was doing Sin City, you're just very aware that, okay, there's the theatrical release, which is pretty much a one-shot; people go and see it at the theaters for a couple of weeks and then they forget about that, and then whatever comes out later is a more definitive version.

I told Frank [Miller], let's do three stories. I know it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but we'll cram three stories together. We'll shoot the full books, but in editing I'll just figure out what stuff we need to cut to make it flow as a feature for the theatrical release so people can sit there and in under two hours see sort of a resemblance what the movie is. But when it goes to DVD, we can do a special edition where the second disc can have the stories separated out in the full cuts so that you can see it the way you would read the books. You just watch "The Yellow Bastard," the full cut, or see "The Big Fat Kill," and that's the way you're supposed to read the books.

You're not supposed to read three really quick, so that's going to be cool. So we shot the full books and all of the voiceover knowing that we could put it together as single episodes, and that eventually if we did part two and part three we'd end up having the discs that had all of the stories separated, and you could put them in any order you want.

IGN: Knowing that there will eventually be multiple versions of a film released on DVD, how do you make sure that your audience is satisfied with each of those iterations?
Rodriguez: Well, usually I just put out one. With this one, they are already putting out one that comes out [August 16] that is just bare bones. I had not put anything extra on that, because I didn't have time to finish my DVD extras. They will put that out four months later because of piracy and stuff like that, and they actually don't put anything on there so that they know, 'well, this isn't the real DVD.'

The real DVD should come out fairly quick, [and] it's the one that will be obviously the double-disc set with all of the goodies on it. I mean, it has all kinds of stuff on there - I have a 20-minute Film School, a new Cooking School, Sin City Breakfast Tacos, and my favorite feature: when people watch DVDs, they complain 'oh, the only thing about home entertainment is you miss that audience experience.' Well, the best audience is in Austin, especially for a movie that was made there. We showed the premiere with the actors there in a 1500-seat theater, and they would go crazy and Sin City got a big reaction. I recorded the audience in 5.1 so if you're watching the DVD and you want to see it with an Austin audience on premiere night, you just click a button and they're all there going 'aaaah!' so it's really cool.

Quentin, when he was directing his sequence, he just let the tape roll when we were shooting, and the sequence taped for an hour, so there are some 20-minute uninterrupted takes. You see him wander in front of the camera and talk to the actors, and [he's] directing and you hear the whole sound of the set. It's like you're sitting right there on the set seeing the movie being shot from the point of view of the camera that's shooting the movie, uninterrupted, and it's really cool. You feel like you're right there, and you get to see what it's like to work with Quentin and the actors and how the movie actually gets made. [And] he will do a commentary on his section.

IGN: Is there a timeline for the sequel(s)?
Rodriguez: We're supposed to shoot in January, but we might do it earlier if we continue working at this pace.

There is no way im gonna wait another four months to buy this, so yeah.. ill buy both editions. Just because... I can :)

straight up says this is just a piracy stopgap release and not "THE REAL DVD"

i think that about wraps it up!

All the DVDs have the entire cast picture on it. The DVDs are fitted with a cardboard slipcase thing that lots of current DVDs have that have one of the other pics

I guess that's an audio channel that you select like they do with commentaries....erm what a waste of disc space :lol Yeah, that'll make up for low bitrate video and audio, won't it? Idiots...

I rarely watch extras more than once so I'm getting this barebones version now. tbh apart from the movie, I only care about video and audio quality and I think that's going to suffer on the Super Edition if there's the commentaries and this 5.1 audience track

I have my idea for Sin City 2...And I think it would work well and if they're going to use A Dame To Kill For, it'd work really well...

In the beginning Dwight is driving around in a car after the events of Big Fat Kill. He then flashes back to A Dame To Kill For, which takes place way before Big Fat Kill...And then when that is over, it goes back to Dwight in the car, and from there continues to the movie with Family Values. I think it'd work well but I'm no Director so...

Just to remind many of you, Sin City is out on DVD and UMD as of today, Tuesday, August 16th. We've had many discussions of the film, books, and the whole universe here but I just wanted to remind you guys that the movie is actually out now.

For those of you shopping for the best price, Circuit City is selling it for $14.99 on both DVD and UMD through the end of the week.

I also believe that someone said Best Buy also has it for $14.99, and I know Target has it for $16.99.

Circuit City is also giving away a free lithogram set of several of the characters while supplies last when you buy the movie.

Now get out there and snag your copy! And mods, it be awful nice if someone could edit the title to "Sin City DVD: Out Now!" :D
