Since when did TLC become the White Trash channel?

Sex Sent Me To the Hospital, Honey Boo Boo, Midgets, Guy With the Huge Balls, Long Island Psycho, Polygamist Central... wtf. Didn't this channel used to be about education? What happened?

Once TLC stopped meaning The Learning Channel, and became The Life Channel, and playing reality tv shows, that was it. It was over. Jumped the shark with a rocketship.

TV execs learned that humanity at large is fascinated more by the worst of what humanity has to offer, as opposed to learning about nature and what not.

Why make nature documentaries that cost time and money when you can just take a camera crew to a trailer park and film a day in the life and get better ratings, ya know?

The channel was founded in 1972 by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and NASA as the Appalachian Community Service Network,[3][4] and was an informative and instructional network focused on providing real education through the medium of television; it was distributed at no cost by NASA satellite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TLC_(TV_network))
Cool right? Then it got privatized and slowly became what it is today.

I agree. TLC was actually "The Learning Channel" back then, just like MTV was once all about music.

I remember watching such shows like "Yan Can Cook," "Light & Easy Cooking," "Say What?", etc. Now they've turned into garbage with garbage reality shows.

I believe Harvey Danger's song "Flagpole Sitta" covered this.

When I was younger, my family never had cable. A friend of mine would tell me about the stuff he'd see on TLC, but I could never confirm any of it was real. He said this old woman was taken to the hospital because her foot had begun to rot away. She had covered it with a blanket. When they removed the covering, there was exposed bone, maggots and fungus growing all over her foot. They sawed the foot off because it was so far gone.

People don't want their entertainment to challenge their minds, they want it to make themselves feel better about themselves.

Why bother improving yourself and becoming a better person? It's easier to feel better about yourself and your lack of change when you can point and laugh at some gross overweight family.

I think the History channel is the biggest WTF in television.
There is also Sci-Fi (SyFy), Discovery, and Cartoon Network (wheres the cartoons?).

Out of the three History channels (History, H2, and Military History), Military History is the only channel that still shows history documentaries.

Why is white trash an acceptable way to describe people? It's basically the US equivalent of chav right?

I used to watch the hell out of While You Were Out.

Miss that show.

From an outside perspective, both 'white trash' and 'trailer trash' seem like a shorthand way of demonising poor white people. Just like chav.

Do you also call out black people who refer to themselves as the N-word amongst themselves? Just curious.

I haven't watched much TV in years, so it's always a shock to revisit it. But then I remember there were some pretty stupid sitcoms on when I was a kid. Sucks that genuine educational channels have gone this route, but Youtube has taken up most of the slack.

As far as I can tell, white trash is not a term of endearment in any context. People are literally being compared to trash.

Google search results:
"yeah I'm white trash"
About 844,000 results

Yeah I'm white trash beautiful

Yeah I'm white trash. IDGAF.

yeah I'm white trash and I know it !!!! LOL

yeah i'm white trash bra but i get it poppin like I'm Flash yah,

Yeah, I'm white trash, and you know it

Seems there's a lot of people who don't mind using the term to describe themselves.

Think of it like Chris Rock's sketch (you know the one), but with poor white folk. There are lots of poor white people out there. I actually grew up one myself. However, not all poor white folk are trailer trash. Even in the deepest depths of Appalachia, not every poor person is trailer trash.

(And yeah, TLC pretty much makes its living from highlighting trailer trash these days.)

Because people watch that show and talk about it and make it part of popular culture in a sense. Look how many shows and people talked about honey boo boo or whatever it was. From late night, to South Park etc.

For a lot of these shows, if they're not in your hearts they're in your minds. Look at us, we're talking about them now, whether it's good or bad.

As for TLC, all I remember was that my parents used to watch some renovation show on that channel. I know that show had huge ratings so that's probably why they've stuck with reality television.

I set myself up for that shit. Well played.

Seriously, has that channel jumped the shark as well? Last time I check they were doing McCoy's and Hatfield's
They still air some good shows, but they're greatly outnumbered by trash TV. It's been like this for awile.

Have we all forgotten about A&E??

Used to mean Arts and Entertainment..

Then slowly seeped in.. Dog the Bounty Hunter, Storage Wars, Pawn everything, Duck Dynasty.

At least they have some good shows still First 48, Bates Motel and what not
