SingStar

Can't believe there hasn't been a thread about this game so far..

Does anyone on GAF actually have it, aside from me?

It's my favourite PS2 release in months, it's just so original (as far as the voice rating etc.) and way too much fun when drinking.

The fact that SCEA hasn't released or even announced it here (US), is why there isn't enough threads/interest in the title :(

I've been thinking of getting this before it even was released. There are some things stopping me though..

I've heard the voice rating isn't exactly 100 %, and I'm afraid that could possibly annoy me.

The song selection isn't that exciting, and I'm not sure if they're releasing more songs later on.

I'm not sure about my singing voice, and would probably end up playing this game alone because of that. :P

OK, I've heard great things about the game, but how exactly is it original, now that Karaoke Revolution has been out for so long?

I know that it offers a dual singing mode and a voice recording/playback mode, but the core of the game seems to be the exact same thing as KR.

Im in New Zealand and we have been, ahem.. 'lucky' enough to have this game for the past 3 months.

Its pretty cool, except the novelty wears off pretty quickly and your left with a karaoke game. We demo'ed it instore for about a month and let me tell you it was a month of hell. SO MANY people cant sing to save themselves.

The game itself is fine, its very accurate and easy to play. We had some problems though with the build quality, a lot of Mic's had to be returned because they were faulty.

There are more discs coming out though Singstar 2 is due in November and there will be a Aus/Nz Disc out next year (according to Sony)

I'm in NZ too, I've had the game since it was released (the mega big press version with all the fancy packaging, woohoo!), and I still love it.

The tracks are awesome to me, but that's because I love the music of Avril, Blondie, Sugababes etc.

Sony in NZ have confirmed that at least one addon disc will be out before Christmas over here.

The voice rating is totally accurate, you should see how hard it is to sing some bits of really fast songs like Livin La Vida Loca, or the highest bits in I Believe In a Thing Called Love.

You can turn the volume of the Mic's up and down as you sing, which is fun to piss off your friends when they're screaming some dodgy tune (turn it right up and embarass them).

There are party modes where you can have four people on each team (so eight players all up), and sometimes two 'allies' have to do a duet and then the other team does the same duet etc., or you have to keep your momentum above halfway for as long as possible etc.

It's such amazing fun, even when you're not singing, to just watch the music videos and see the notes onscreen fly all over the place :D

I was in Portugal for Euro2004 and it was everywhere! Every large electronics store I went into they had systems setup so people could try it out and there were always lines for people wanting to try. I went into one Fnac and there were at leaset 30+ people formed in a large circle around a large plasma TV, the game with some microphones, and a little staging area.

I'm tone deaf and in the US so this purchase (or Karoke Revolution) isn't for me.

Does Karaoke Revolution judge you as you sing? (never seen or heard of it)

Are you sure this game didn't do well in the UK, seems odd since it's selling like hotcakes in Australasia.

Yeah, of course. KR has been out way before Singstar came out, btw. Singstar does have a thing or two that KR doesn't (actual licensed songs, duel singing mode, voice recording) and is also missing couple of things KR has (interactive cheering/booing audience for example)

Well, the songs are licensed but are not the original versions performed by original singers, but rather re-created to sounds as close to the original as possible.

which hardly matters.... as it's karaoke and you have the vocals turned off.

btw KR1 is coming out in the UK under a title which i forget the name of (slightly different, still has the word 'karaoke' in the title.) i saw it in the new edge. dunno if the song list is the same as the us KR1 (we have a second one now as well.)

singstar doesn't appear to have enough songs, but it has some really good ones. much slicker looking euro-interface, as opposed to KR's horrific 'americans trying to do cute and failing miserably' vibe.

Had a big round of SingStar tonight. There were four of us so we split into teams of two, and some of the game modes you have to do are so fun.

There's your standard head-to-head both singing at once against each other (one team member versus an opposing team member), then the duet one where two members of the same team sing together simultaneously, and it 'combines' your notes/tones/pitch etc. on the fly to give you the result of how you're doing with every note.

But the most fun would have to be Pass the Mic, where there are little bars at the top of the screen that tell which player when to sing (the bars count down) his or her next bit. It's really fun quickly singing a couple of lines then having your team member sing the next bit.

Can't wait for the addon discs!

Karaoke Stage.

I'm waiting for the price to drop significantly lower before buying this(or for SCEA to announce this for US...). Very steep right now including shipping from PAL area. I love the song list though and the record/playback feature sounds great.

Does Singstar work with the standard Sony headsets that come with Socom, etc. or do you need to use the microphone that come with it? (Does it come with one or two microphones?)

If someone knows of a way for me to use this on a (modded) NTSC PS2, then I'll probably pick it up, since it looks like it's not coming here :(...I wonder if it can easily be patched for NTSC? Anyone know?

Otherwise I guess the alternative is to try and find a video conversion box...

Bumping this thread - does this game have a 60Hz mode, anyone?

I suppose I can patch it, but I want to make sure it will work...I just got back from a party where we played several hours of Karaoke Revolution so I'm excited about getting more stuff to sing :)

One last bump to see if anyone in an NTSC territory has imported this successfully...I really want this game and want to know how you're playing it :)

Finally got mine :D
My first pal import.
Ran on my tv with no problem. Something is wrong with my disc though, the laser is having a hard time reading it. Dont' think the laser's bad cuz other games have no problem.Loading it thru HD Loader now, that should solve the problem...

But from what I played, really good. Especially the song selection. Can't wait to get the sequel.

I have both. They are fun at parties but obviously not while you're alone. I'm anticipating the local version... apparently there will be local versions of the game for all major countries, including Sweden.

New SingStars incoming!

At least according to Sony's Finnish release list.

SingStar 3 in April, SingStar Pop in May. Plus localized versions first for German, French and Spanish territories, later for Sweden, and even rumored for Finland etc.

only heard about singstar pop for summer release. if singstar 3 is coming, hopefully scee implants some kind of cool (!) singleplayermode, support for 3, 5, players and more, good, songs.

You live in the US? How can your TV display 50Hz picture? Singstar does not have an option for 60Hz. How does that problem with disc reading manifest? It could be that your videos are going out of sync as they are encoded at 25FPS and not 30FPS as they would have to be for the NTSC video out.

Wow, great news if true. I've become bored of Singstar and Singstar Party songs lately.
BRING IT ON!

Singstar Classic Rock? *faints*

P.S. Bought Karaoke Revolution 1-3 but those games <<< Singstar imho.
