Not sure what movies you have been watching but hollywood action movies haven't been using majority practical effects especially for gore and blood for a decade at least.

The movie was pointless and forgettable and the action was so exaggerated it almost felt ironic. Cool, it had some good practical effects but the practical effects were used for the dumbest type of action involving the most boring characters
