Small Newsflash: December NPD is over 2* as big as November

OK, Nov NPD sucked for everybody not Microsoft. You could argue Activision had a nice bounce from last year, but Tony Hawk had a big fall, and COD didn't do the numbers many expected. The DS made a nice splash, but given the limited launch shipment, it was a guaranteed sellout. The December numbers should be really good for it.

However, December is THE month for videogames. Sales are over twice as much as November and every title in the list below, showed significant increases in December over November.

Based on these numbers, I think

1) MGS3 & MP:E will experience a nice bounce. Not enough to offset the disappointment, but they should both do very well.

2) Those who think Halo 2 is going to have a severe decline will be eating even more crow. Looking at the history for the past several years. ALMOST EVERY SINGLE TITLE has had substantial bounces in December over November. You can say that Halo 2 was frontloaded all you want, but I doubt the dynamics are so much different for this game vs any other hyped/anticipated game. It's just larger.

I will concede that it will be tough for it to match November's monster sales, but it does have history on it's side. In addition, I think it's chances for over 2M for the month are extremely, extremely high. December buyers are a different group than normal buyers. It's moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandma, grandpa, etc and junior wants him some Halo.

The BIG question
How much are Halo 2, GTA, & NFSU 2 going to continue to put pressure on all other titles? Sales growth YOY excluding these two titles was very negative and clearly shows that these games are eating the other guys alive.

Will the other titles have a chance at the sales they had hoped for?

Most games go up month over month from November to December, but I find it hard to see Halo 2 coming close to 3.3 million for December. Maybe I'll eat crow for this but I think it'll do "only" 1.2 million combined (Reg & special) for December. Xbox userbase just isn't that big compared to PS2 to sustain such a huge number month over month.

GTA:SA - 1.4 million
MGS3 - 500K
MP2:E - 350K

Good job on the fact finding... I knew December was definitely bigger than November, but some of those statistics are just mindblowing.

Too bad you're missing Dec 03's totals for >100K. It's also amazing that in Nov of '02, '03, and '04 all had 33 titles over 100K.

Looking at that list it seems like December's list will be pretty much the same as November but with the numbers multiplied. It's not like Metroid is suddenly going to cut into the sales of GTA or Halo. Though I bet some of the older cheaper titles will rise futher in the charts as they are snatched up as Xmas gifts. Stuff like Super Monkey Ball, etc.

Nintendo should start up a Gameboy Player's Choice line. Stuff like Super Mario Advance for $19.99. I know I would break down and purchase a few more games. Might help GBA game sales for the holidays.

Any word on how "Limited" the LE version of Halo 2 is... ? My local eb still has a full shelf dedicated to the LE version. Doubtful this thing is going to be worth money anytime soon.

Well, the sales in November were about 50/50 - clearly it wasn't that limited. Any item that has nearly 2 million units out there probably won't appreciate much.

I have a bad feeling the Cube won't sale a million(U.S) consoles in the month of Dec., the only way Nintendo could change this is by pushing RE4 hard this month. They have to stop playing it safe with Mature titles. They basically have stop caring about who get those mature title, if a 13yr old kid get a hold on a copy of RE4 despite the ESRB rating so be it.

I would be running commercials and the trailer in movie theaters now.

Halo2 in my mind will see a jump in sales , this month. Its the title to own on the console, its draw in title, the other titles benefit from the title success. Xbox console would probably some where in the 1.7 million range for this month.

The sad thing is anything done now, will be seen as a act of desperation for Nintendo.

Its weird though how last year the Oct-Nov, was dramatically different last year.

Hardware #s for December 2003

PS2 1,970,000
XBOX 1,122,000
GCN 1,163,000
GBA 2,316,000

What will they be for 2004.

Will Sony and MS be able to supply enough for sales?

Will GCN sell enought to hit 2 million for the year (Needs 510K)?

XBOX will sell 1.5 million
PS2 will sell 1.4 million
GCN wont hit 510K
GBA will do about the same
DS wont sell 500K

Any word on how "Limited" the LE version of Halo 2 is...

My guess is Limited means that they will stop producing it after December 31.

Halo will hit 4 million in sales in the US
Halo 2 will hit 5 million in sales in the US

Yeah, the big advertised titles seemed to do a lot better in December. No reason to say why it won't carry over for everyone who gets exposure this year.

I forgot how amazing the bounce NFSU got.

I'm hesitant about the first two numbers only because I wonder if either manufacturer has the current production capacity to handle it. PS2 has done it before, but the second half of this year has been a supply disaster. Xbox has never seen a number like that.

As for DS, I bet it will sell whatever is shipped.

You're right... I believe they have the ability to pull those only if they can keep the shelves stocked. I think the shortages are a bit overblown... but even a non-critical shortage can effect sales. Sometimes shoppers are just lazy and won't travel to 3 or 4 stores just to find a PS2 or Xbox.

You think Xbox and PS2 will double/nearly double their November sales, but the Cube won't? Even with the MK:DD bundle, which has sold fairly well since its introduction? Even accounting for the fact that as sonycowboy said, December is largely about adults buying gifts for their children and GC attracts a significantly younger audience (just look at the best-selling title last November...it won't be found on Xbox or PS2, and it's now bundled with another system this holiday, hint hint)?

Sorry, but the GC will do at least 510k in December.

EDIT: I also think that if Sony can get a handle on the PS2 shortage situation, it will top Xbox for December.

I am assuming that Sony and MS will supply the pipeline.

Figured that in November XBOX was up 44% so in December a 30% jump isnt out of the question.

Whats strange is if there is a shortage, it still may not go in the favor of Nintendo. This would be good oppurtunity for Nintendo to start pumping RE4 this month. If not, as a fan of Nintendo, I weep.

Last year the GCN went from 754,000 to 1,163,000 a jump of 54%
The previous year the GCN went from 468,000 to 619,000 a jump of 32%

Last year the XBOX went from 490,000 to 1,122,000 a jump of 130%
The previous year the XBOX went from 468,000 to 1,033,000 a jump of 120%

So from history December doesnt provide as big a jump for GCN as it does for XBOX.

Accurate point, though of course it would be less lopsided without those Black Friday GCN sales last year.

The thing about the PSTwo shortage is that apparently Sony already planned a drop in the demand of the PSTwo. Last year Sony sold what like 890K PS2s in November. If they expected demand to be higher with the PSTwo shouldnt they have at least supplied the same amount as the previous year. Or did the expect demand to shrink and were off on the amount of shrinkage.

Hmm...good point.

However, I still believe GC will top at least 510k. :)

We're just 2 weeks away from Christmas Eve and stores in my area are still just getting tiny shipments of PS2's(6 to 10). Something needs to change quickly or it could be ugly.

My local Best Buy had a stack of 120 Xboxes on November 30th. Yesterday, they were down to 30. Today, they had 15. The pressing question is, when these are gone, will that be it?

It's going to be ugly. That's all there is to it. Sony can only hope that the pent up demand lasts into next year when they're able to get product into the channels. In the long term it makes little difference, but it does give the other guys some amount of benefit, and the air freight Sony is paying for cuts into their profit on the PS2.

Halo 2 sold to the folks with money in their pocket in November. The December sales will be dominated by casual buyers for Christmas Presents. We've seen the attach rate for the Halo franchise and Xbox console sales.

I see no reason why Halo 2 won't do 2 million in December. I'd also suspect some very healthy numbers for Halo 1 as well.

I just hope Ninja Gaiden, Star Wars KoTOR 2, and DoA U see some good sales. I love all of these games and hope they do well. DoA U might be a bad omen for future exclusive Team Ninja titles if the trend continues into next gen.

I do expect strong software sales in December, not just because of the Christmas shopping but you're going to have a lot of new system owners hitting the stores on the 26th looking for games for their new toys. Shelves usually look decimated that last week of December.

I wouldn't bet much on 2 of those, Ninja Gaiden's sales are just sad. I don't see it even coming close to sniffing 1M, even with Platinum Hits.:

XBX XBX DEAD OR ALIVE ULTMATE $1,741,184 35,318
XBX XBX NINJA GAIDEN $201,550 4,822

My local Future Shop went from around 10 PS2s on the shelves in November and now they have a massive stack of them. Suffice it to say, the shortage is over.

I still haven't bought a copy of DOA Ultimate yet, and it was high on my wishlist. It just released too close to Halo 2, and now I'm playing KOTOR 2. I will buy the game at some point, I just don't know when.

:lol :lol :lol

You can keep posting this as many times as you like, but I don't think it's going to make it true. What's the big deal with you people denying a shortage? It's a damn fact. And sure you can claim damage control, but what damage is there. Beyond millions upon millions of dollars lost for Sony, millions and millions of dollars of lost sales for publisher's which is pissing them off to no end. In one of the reports, they actually did some calculation of lost software sales because of this.

Sonycowboy:
Why don't you have a blog or a web site? You should set one up, and cover the NPD there, you could get decent traffic and a web site like Gamespot or IGN Entertainment would likely pick you up further down the road for an NPD's Corner feature. Shit, if I was national, I'd hire it for my mag. If it's something you're interested in doing PM me and we can talk about getting you a web site.

2004 has thusfar been the year of the Xbox, so I don't see why December 2004 won't be dominated by the X!

I'm calling it now: 2005, Year of the Xenon!

edit: I'm firmly of the camp that believes that there never was a PS2 shortage and I also believe Oceania was never really at war with Eurasia!

I dunno why Tecmo is happy only selling 5K a month with Ninja Gaiden. They already made their money back and could have made a killing if they dropped the title to Platinum Hits in November.

50-60K a month (maybe more) at $20 >>>>> 5K month at $50

Is halo 2 going to have the highest ratio of a title's sold to consoles sold ever?

its already at 5 million worldwide supposedly, and with a base at 16 million its close to a third and we havent yet hit christmas.

anybody know some facts on this one?

Seems like it has a fair chance. As long as we don't consider launch periods, where things like SM64 and the first Halo would be doing even better.

Not enough talk about NPD sales lately :D

December's sales recored by NPD end this Saturday, Jan 1st. And they should be reported Thursday, Jan 13th. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town, out of the country, and out of touch :(

Should be a lotta fun with Halo vs GTA: round 2 (after a near complete ass kicking by Halo 2 in round 1)

Are you sure about your math? ;)

Last I checked, $120k << $150k

At 60K it would be 1.2 million. :P

If Tecmo dropped the game to Platinum hits they would only need to sell 12,500 a month to average the same amount of dollars they are getting now.
