Smokers at work?

I used to work at a Sears long, long ago (last year). Oftentimes the managers would go stand outside and smoke while punched in. This in and of itself isn't a huge issue, as we stayed punched in for most breaks.

It became an issue when people would take 4 breaks in a 6 hour shift - a shift where a non-smoker would be allowed to take 1 1/2 hour lunch and 1 15 minute break.

It began to grate on my nerves horribly and the fact that it was allowed was a major reason why I left the company.

Now at my current job, I got a new manager who smokes. It doesn't bug me, he's only gone outside to do it once and that was because a friend was visiting him, but that's what prompted this. Does this piss anyone else off? Especially - are there any smokers that this pisses off?

I have a nice cushy office job now sow it doesn't bother me that much anymore but it drove me crazy at my other jobs.

The managers, etc (even those that didn't smoke) would always let the smokers go smoke their cigarettes on top of their regular breaks/lunch. Everyone was kinda like "well its only 5-10 minutes". It pissed me off because while it was only 5-10 minutes it would happen 3-4 times during the day so that's anywhere from 20-40 minutes where someone was getting paid to do nothing and I was left alone to pick up the slack.

I smoke at work. But only during my 3 allocated breaks, one of which is my lunch hour.

If anyone is offended they can eat a dick.

drug addicts get angry when not allowed drugs. how can you not see that its best for everyone if they smoke?

Because if they were abusing any other drug, they would lose their job.

It's not best for anyone to have someone unproductive eating up payroll. I could have a non-smoker who doesn't make me pay him for 40 minutes of non-work a day - that's 3 and 1/3 hours of non-work in a 5-day week. 3 1/3 hours that could be used on someone who actually, you know, works.

And as an added bonus, one who doesn't trail in a nasty stream of poisonous chemicals several times a day!

I've only ever had one job where smokers were allowed to have smoke breaks on top of their regular breaks so I took it upon myself to take the same number of breaks and read in the washroom. :)

And of course if you fired them for not working enough, they'd sue, and WIN, for discrimination.

AMERICA!

FUCK YEAH!!!!

What bugs the shit out of me is how rank smokers smell after taking a smoke break. I'm so glad the co-worker in question quit smoking as it was getting on my nerves.

As a smoker, it's nice to be offered an extra break or two, but it's really not fair to those who are smart enough not to inhale crap into their lungs. i did take a couple of extra breaks during my 18-month stay at Books A Million, but i never made a habit out of it.

Ironically, shortly before i left, one of the new employees complained when three of the four workers (myself included) took a smoke break after closing. This prompted the rule that no one could smoke after closing. It really doesn't benefit anyone since after close everyone just continues their closing duties, and if someone inside needed someone who was outside and smoking, all they have to do is go to the front door.

Well if you let them smoke while they were working they wouldn't need breaks. :D
Exactly. Smoking is addictive. Either you let them smoke on the job, or let them smoke on a break. If you don't let them smoke, you will have an even bigger problem of agitated, disgruntled coworkers whos nic-fits are replaced by even more annoyed, disgusting ticks. Get the fuck over it.

I don't smoke anymore (eventhough I bought a pack for the first time in almost a year last week), and I don't care if a coworker takes a million smoking breaks. As long as they're work isn't shucked off on me, and I'm allowed to take an ocassional break too, then who cares? If it's so bad, start smoking. :lol PEACE.

i can see smoking on the job if it's an outdoor or maybe a warehouse establishment, but i don't want to be surrounded in smoke when i work. Save that for the clubs.

Thing is, a person who's on a break isn't contributing to the team, whether they're smoking or not. The work that they're not doing will be redistributed among the other workers, outside of maybe a few situations. Even if the person is a manager, additional periods of non-work will mean their work will get pushed down onto other managers, who'll delegate their menial tasks covertly to the rest of the staff.

My last job was pretty damned shitty anyway, but a few people there took about one smoke break per hour. I made sure I got the same amount of breaks, so for five minutes or so at a time I'd just sit around and take my "Fuck off, I'm not doing a damned thing" break.
