Smoking hot 360's?

So I'm in a position of moderation on a news board and there are a few loud mouths that keep talking about how "My friends 360 omg" got so hot that it started emitting smoke. I've been dismissing it as it's a pretty ridiculous claim but, for arguements sake, has anyone else heard of this happening?

Yes. the 360 runs pretty hot, but smoke? Whatever. This is either the next "XBOX IS HEUG!!1" in the making or retarded internet fanboys are living up to their namesake.

DISCUSS!

I think that people are overzealous about their new piece of hardware, and so in most cases they exagerate a bit in the HOT thing, and i don't really believe the part about the smoke.
Most i've heard is the power unit getting really hot (more so than the console itself, but that should be a normal thing) and i've read controversial reportos about the Xbox itself getting hotter when in horizontal/vertical position (yes, it's one way or the other, depending on the person). Other than that, some people complained about their 360's locking up in mostly games (dashboard and DVD movies are trouble free for the most part) and rest is all about them being noisy.

the only time i've ever seen smoke come out of videogame hardware, was that time you and fox went at it in DDR.

what a site. lemme see if chango or eiko still have any footage.

it's crap. i've tested the box by covering the rear vents (DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDDIES). it gets REALLY hot, but nothing smoked. like all electronics YMMV though, depends on your particular chipset etc.

however, if there's dust or bugs inside the box, i can see those getting cooked and making some interesting smells.

hmm .. I think quite a lot of X360 will be overheating because of dust.

Looks like they just coppied Apple's Powermac design, and shrink it to the size of xBox, but they forgot the most important part of PM G5 cooling system is the space in the case.

Also, Flextronics may have rushed these out without giving them a good burn-in. Fresh electronic components do emit a "burning" smell once some electrons get applied. Think new car smell... except it only last for an hour or two.

mines been on almost since yesters midnight release and it is not really even warm to the touch.

i assume it's just crap being spread .

Okay, well I just wanted to make 100% sure. They're being persistant, almost like they're god damned freedom fighters.

"OMFG IM BEING CENSORED PLZ READ B4 DELETED MICROSOFT DUZNT WANT U 2 KNO!!!!1"

Thanks GAF! Group hug!

My PS2 now has a light tan because it is next to my xbox.

Now seriously, though, my Xbox 360 is cool to the touch, but it is loud.

I just played 4 hours straight and have no heat problem.

People are making shit up like it's smoking hot or 4 friends had their Xboxes already break.

Mine actually managed to set my other consoles on fire.

I think that's intentional. If it can detect its in the same vacinity as competing products it sends power surges down the line to them. You don't think that monstrous power pack is just to produce power do you? I'm sure if you turn the lights out and get some night vision, you'll see the sides of the power pack open up and little Windows-branded bots come out and start destroying anything not affiliated with Microsoft.

Your X360 is not overheating, it's just having a hard time processing the huge amount of power coming from the power supply. The power supply contains one pubic hair fron Chuck Norris, so you gotta expect limits to be reached.
