So Bill Nye goes on CNN to debate climate change...

I think there was a thread on this already but it is pretty disgusting how one of the host was completely ignoring the issue and talking about bullshit. It was totally "its not what you're saying but how your saying it" bullshit.

The only thing you can expect from a shit show like Crossfire is shit.
However, it is encouraging to see that energy sector shills like the heritage foundation and are starting to realize that flat-out denial is a losing position to stake, that's progress I guess.

Oh, and fuck sippy cupp and her stupid ass concern trolling.

I love how she kept talking out of her ass about "Costs".

"I have a vested financial interest in downplaying the effects of climate change, therefore I will look as honest and naive as I can, while cherry picking data".

I thought Bill Nye and the black guy came out looking a lot better than the other two people. I think the black guy in particular is someone we're going to see more of. I found his points really convincing.

I was ready to hate when I saw that it was Crossfire, but it has improved since Jon Stewart was on there.

Holy shit, what a horrible show.
This is Crossfire?
By god what a horrible way to frame a debate and handle it.
WTF was that ?

Yes, this is the very same show that Jon Stewart once killed.

Now it's back. CNN is desperate and terrible.

is it just me or has the malaysian flight network gotten really bad lately. like i swear a few years ago it wasn't this awful.

now i feel it's as dumb as fox news (but not blatantly racist at least)

That was painful to watch. First of all they are debating was absolutely terrible. Rather than presenting their own arguments, both sides just tried to corner each other all the way through. This is a problem stemming from the host, who did not have any sort of control over the discussion.

I have to say, though. Some of the wording of the show made it very difficult to believe that they were taking an objective stance. For instance, calling the facts and statistics "scare tactics" immediately makes the audience think the evidence was tampered with to skew the results on the government's favor. Whether that is true or not is irrelevant since no one in the debate even attempted to falsify or justify the aforementioned statement.

The other main issue (which, to me, was the biggest problem) is that god awful poll. 25 million cars are nothing in the US, and certainly nothing in the world. Furthermore, when discussing automobiles, or fossil fuel - dependent transportation, they needed to account for all the trains, boats, and planes that also emit a large number of CO2. This quantity was brushed aside to show that cows produce more CO2 than a fraction of the cars used today. I'm very glad Bill Nye picked up on this but, as expected, the conversation immediately took a different direction once the flaw was shown.

Yeah I'm not happy at all about this debate. It could have, and should have, gone much better than that.

US really need to start accepting the truth, climate change is happening and we need to act NOW. For fuck sake, this shit pisses me off.

Who? I mean there was someone else besides that woman? I mean... I felt in love I just saw her.

It was horrible how the other guy didn't let him speak...

That's exactly what Jon Stewart said on the show to get it cancelled for the first time. CNN don't care about a real debate, they only care about the ratings and in the process giving legitimacy to lunatics who shouldn't have this platform for their bullshit.

I never understood why climate change deniers (who are mostly conservative) are so anti-environment when in my mind, they would want to preserve what God gave them. Right? Or am I just crazy?

Stewart needs to go on it and get it canceled again.

Yeah, Sippy Cupp was pretty much an idiot during this debate.

The denial of global climate change and the consequences of it is probably the most idiotic position the GOP has taken over the last few years. Right up there with vaccines cause autism and cutting taxes on the rich raises revenue.

Yeah, but on the other side of it, it is infringing on their God given right to do whatever they want.

Logic is not the strong suit of the conservative.

To be fair, it's not the strong suit of the majority of the population, but the belief system of the right isn't so much logically congruent as it is loyalty congruent. They stick together, and it doesn't matter what is said - it simply matters who's saying it.

They bought into the propaganda of the politicians, who are all sleeping with the oil companies and determined to make it part of the conservative belief system.

When the red-head lady called the dude next to her a "prepper", I just lost it. He cites a bunch of facts and evidence, and her response is to call him a nerd?

How did Bill Nye become relevant again? All I know is that he had a TV show back in the 90s and then he went away and now he is back as an expert on everything. Was he jealous of Neil deGrasse or something?

Because clearly a few nutjobs on TV represent all of the USA...

I don't think you've been paying attention. At all. These few "nutjobs" represent a pretty significant chunk of our population that has had a huge effect on public policy, education, media, and many other aspects of our society. They also spend billions of dollars to push their dishonest self serving destructive views.

I have a question, more out of ignorance more than stirring up controversy.

How is Bill Nye qualified to talk about climate change?

I mean, he played a scientist and educator on his show, but I'm looking through his education and it's in Mechanical Engineering.

A classically trained engineer has vast knowledge of climate change?

That's the good thing about being a scientist: You can easily learn about different fields, even if you are classically trained in one particular one. You obtained the skills once you get the Ph.D and then you can easily branch out and learn about the research on your own.

Not having a tv show isn't the same as "going away". He's been active as a scientist, engineer, and science educator all this time. He's still made the odd tv and movie appearance though.

Just to clarify, Bill Nye does not hold a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering (which, I could be wrong about this being from Canada, wasn't really a thing back when he graduated in the 70's), he holds a B.Sc only.

Normally, I would not be a huge fan of that, but he has dedicated his entire life to science and educating youth. The man knows what he's talking about.

Seems to me he's using the bit of fame he had to try and get this important issue some attention.

Oh shit, Obama and his Liberal Elite are trying to scare us with their reports on climate change!!!

I really wish this wasn't a political issue. The fact that it is only guarantees years of deadlock. It's just one more issue for the current mockery of the Republican party to be willfully ignorant about.

Wouldn't someone who directly works in the field be a better person to ask/debate in matters of climate change?

The thing, its hard to find good communicators. Nye has made his career based on communicating, so he's good at breaking down complicated concepts for the common man.

A bit of an aside, but did Jon Stewart himself kill Crossfire the first time around? I saw the clips of him going on the show and putting it deservedly on blast, but was that the thing that made CNN go "You know what? Yeah, fuck that show," and pull the plug.

Not immediately, but a like six months later they cancelled it for the exact reasons he was talking about when he went on.

That was very hard to watch, I could see Bill Nye almost breaking... he knows he can't debate with these people, its a no win situation.

Personally though I think this is one of the most complex issues around and I think scientists themselves downplay the complexity of it as there are billions and billions of factors that can affect the entire result. Salinization levels, water vapour levels, universe background radiation, solar activity, Jupiter's radiation levels etc.. The problem is in a debate that isn't 5 weeks long you can't realistically cover the major ones so it is very hard to argue the matter in bullet points that society needs to consume. I think the community should come at this as an efficiency exercise, how to better use the resources we have.

Also needs not just a scientific mind but a good 'shouter' as that is the only thing these people understand, that 'debate' was just a case of who shouts the most. Wasn't set up as an actual debate, most schools have better debating terms and conditions. Seems like most of the media have gone that way.
