So how much did Vagrant Story sell?

Since it obviously is among the ten best games ever created(if you love it as much as me).
Listening to the soundtrack right now and it reminds me of how an AMAZING game that was.

If they made a sequel, they should make the items drops have a even more random nature(Diablo being a good example) and the weapon attributes being abit less demanding(I mean, having a weapon set for about every type of creature is demanding imo).
But that little alteration aside the game is just perfect.

Anyone know how well it sold? I just have a feeling that it sold even less than the 'rare' Valkyrie Profile.

PS! I just remembered, the game was one of the firt to have moving eyes and lips. I remember I being in awe. :lol

It didn't sell nearly as well as it probably should have.

In 2000, the year of it's release, it sold a pretty sad (for Squaresoft standards at the time) 304,795 units. I'm not sure what it did in the UK and US, but I'm not even sure it broke a million.

Matsuno am cry...
followed by: "Yes! I'd LOVE to do Final Fantasy XII!"
followed by: 3334782 delays

man, i remember loving the game though i never finished it. i have it but too lazy to see if my save files are still there. i always wanted a next-gen sequel or now i'll even take the same damn thing for the PSP.

i loved the battle system (well, you had to get the timing spot on for chains). i didn't like the fact that i was fighting this one boss and it took me 50 min's to kill it... probably wasn't using the right weapon.

come to the PSP :(

No bosses take over 50mins.
The last boss(es) perhaps 30min but I think you're strategy was wrong.
It's all about weapon allignements as well as using de-strengthing spells on enemies and buffing the hell out of yourself.

Pretty big spoilers in that first post... Mod might want to edit that thread title to reflect it (or remove the first couple images).

yeah... something like that ;)

Speaking of Valkyrie Profile, I picked up both games in the same day. Beat VP, don't particularly care for Vagrant Story. Couldn't get into it. Even with the thousands of short cut keys (which more ARPGs desperately need) the game was just too slow.
I haven't completed it, so my opinion isn't 100% fair, but every time I try, nothing. Just feels like I'm missing something.
And frankly the first dungeon made me want to never see the color brown again.

It gets better, but you have to be willing to deal with a lot of menu-loading and weapon switching. A great game, but a little technically amibitious for what was achieveable in an easily playable manner on the PSOne.

The only thing that kinda kills VS for me was the weapon element/alignment system. I mean, the fact that your weapon takes on the attributes of the enemies you're fighting is cool (if I remember how that works correctly), but my problem is that that pretty much requires you to have a bunch of different weapons, since if you have a weapon with high element x, and you fight an enemy of that element, you're going to do jack damage. This game's in my top 10, but if it wasn't for that, it'd be my clear cut favorite game ever. Still one of, if not my favorite game endings ever too. I'd kill for a sequel of some kind.

If you want to experience this game but absolutely can't stand the weapon-switching, weapon-building, affinity-tracking, and the menu-loading all that entails, get somebody who's finished the game to give you a save with their game plus file.

The second time through the game, you keep all your attributes and weapons, and you're much more powerful. Most of the time, you can just hack away at enemies with a couple dedicated weapons. It does take away some of the strategy, but also a lot of the toil and tedium and allows you to just enjoy the plot and dungeon-hacking.

Those are cutscenes from the first 30min. I hardly would call them spoilers. :)

Aw c'mon, the scene depicted in the first two is a pretty nice twist after you've seen Ashley's confabulated memories of brigands that murdered his family.

Chiming in to say awesome, awesome game. I owned it for a year (I guess it owned me for a year lollers) and decided to give it another shot, and absolutely loved it. It's really not that long once you get past the learning curve, I think I ended up with ~12 hours on my file. I can tell you that my local Wal-Mart STILL has a stack of them in the game case, all still priced at $39.99.

The atmosphere, the story, the graphics (at the time), holy crap the MUSIC, it's gaming goodness. Utterly awesome story, I did NOT see the
big twist
coming. I was pleasantly surprised.

Really interesting ending too.

This game kicked my ass when I first got it. I didn't understand the weapon system too much and would spend hours trying to kill bosses. This went on for years after I got the game as I would stop playing for about 8 months at a time then start back up when I felt like playing.

I hated the game and thought it was over rated. But then one day I finally 'got' the weapon system and started kicking some ass and seeing the greatness of VS. It took me three years to beat it, but I still love the fuck out of it. It really is one of the greastest games ever made.

Kind of an odd question here: Is there a reason for Dragon Quest: Breath of Fire playing, or seeming like it plays so similarly to Vagrant Story? I remember checking the credits of both for mutual names, but the only one is...Matsu...Matsuida...The composer. I guess similar music would make the games seem rather similar, but the way the cutscenes and the battle system were done just seemed really reminescent of VS. One of the reasons I liked it so much, and would highly recomend it to anyone else who liked VS.

Anyhoo.

Wow, those graphics are bad. It's strange really, I like the game but I just can't seem to play many PSX or N64 games because of their horrible 3d graphics for the most part. I love me some 2d though. This of course doesn't apply to PSX or N64 games with good 3D graphics.

I can never turn down a VS thread. :) Cheers to my fellow vagrants, this game will live on in infamy. I believe it sold like 800K worldwide last time I heard. Realize though that this was probably a year after the game came out. The graphics look hopelessly pathetic now, but it had some of the best graphics in a PS1 game at the time. I remember those ads were jawdropping (IMO) at the time.

The story, the battle system...everything about this game was perfect. I beat it once, and then started on the second quest (you were supposed to be able to unlock some other stuff with a second run-through IIRC), but I got sidetracked with NCAA Football or something after that.

The final boss is the only one I remember taking a really long time, and that was only b/c it took me a while to figure out how to beat him. But really, this is the most underrated PS1 game IMO. It deserved to sell more than all the FFs combined. I can't help but gush everytime I talk about this game, b/c afaik the dev team got some serious backlash from Square due to the sales of the game. It will probably never get a sequel, which might be the greatest crime against humanity, b/c the ending is ripe for a sequel. And it wouldn't be some cheesy sequel either, it was really going somewhere. The story of the vagrant has only just begun. But if Squeenix has anything to say about it, the story has probably ended. :(

If I believed they were worth a damn, I'd petition for this game to get a PS3 sequel. The art is incredible. Just imagine this game with a next-gen makeover. :O Everything else made after it would be fighting for table scraps. My Vagrant Story whorage shall never die...NEVAR!!!!111 PEACE.

VS is one of the games that benefits most from the PS2's "smooth textures" ability for PSOne games; it helps reduce the visibility of the pixels and blocky edges.

Amazing game, and the best localization ever.

The game didn't sell bad considering how demanding it was, but there were rumors shortly after it came out that Matsuno was fired/demoted since the game didn't sell in the millions.

The item drop system is similar to Diablo. The game doesn't need to be dumbed down. You are over exaggerating the complexity of the weapon system.

Hmm that same thing happened to me, beating on bosses continuely doing no damage... I just got frustrated and quit. Maybe I should pick it up after alllll these years...

YES! Do it.

Maybe I can squeeze in another playthrough of Vagrant Story after Psychonauts and before Katamari/Colossus...

I had this game as a kid but didn't "get" it enough to enjoy it. I'd love to try to tackle it now.

One thing needs mentioning:

The workshop. I mean, creating your own weapons with a million of possibilites is just AWESOME. And the great feeling when doing it thanks to the workshop theme and sort of down to earth.. workshop. Complete with wooden benches, furnace...etc.
