So I (almost) just got Mugged

oh yay we're sharing mugging stories...actually thats nothing to be happy about.
This happened to me in november, week before Thanksgiving break. I live in Champaign, go to U of I. My friend Chris and I were walkin to a gyros place to get some food at about 2am cuz like 5 of us happened to be pullin an allnighter, but only the two of us were hungry. So it's like a Thursday night and people start drinkin here by Tuesday, so ya. We're about half way there when two guys start joggin up behind us. I caught them out of the corner of my eye but didn't think they were coming for us. They catch up to us and ask where we're going and such. one guy puts his hand on my shoulder and I take it off sayin "dude alright dont touch me" and then I turn around to see four other of his buddies had joined the fun.
Those four grab my friend Chris and start draggin him into this empty parking garage. He's like "woh woh hey whatta ya doin, help" etc etc, but everyone around was too drunk too care, or just didn't care period. Well luckily he breaks free and fuckin bolts. I'm like.....woops, and take off running as well. Unfuckingfortunately my new cell phone which I had purchased a week ago falls outa my fleece pocket and drops. No way im turnin around to get it either and we bolt all the way back to our dorm (with one idiot trying to chase the two of us down more than half the time)... we called the cops almost immediately upon reachin, and they say ok theyll come to talk to us if we wish. Go figure, they never show up....Whatever, I was pissed i lost that cell phone cuz it cost $200+ but wasn't real worth crying over. I was safe. But oh so pissed.

From what I've heard from various safety lectures and the like, that's probably why you were targeted. They probably didn't know what you really had. I'm surprised they didn't catch up to you considering all the stuff you were carrying. My advice to you, travel as light as possible at all times, especially if you are going to be out past a certain time or in a sketchy part of town.

My friends once got mugged. They were leaving my house and going back to theirs and on their way two guys knocked them off their bikes grabbed them and said that if they started laughing they would punch them. The two muggers kept doing all this funny stuff but they didnt laugh, so they kept beating them up and then took their bikes, their money and ran away, but in manchester that was usual.

At least someone here sees my point of view. You are DEFINITELY better off fending off an attacker with a gun than one wielding a knife. With a knife, there's nothing to grab. If your assailant has a knife, particularly a long one, you'll have a difficult time trying to wrest it from his/her hands. It's not going to happen. If they have a gun, stay close, distract their view, and snatch the gun. It is NOT EASY to let off a shot towards someone who is up in your face resisting. Damn near impossible. If someone pulls a knife on you, you might as well run.

It's not like the gun will dissapear just because you're close to him. he could shoot you in the toe, the knee, the head, the chin, whatever the fuck, all from close range. It all depends on the angle of his WRIST. Shots fired at close range are even MORE deadly than those fired from a distance. A knifeman has to thow his whole arm at you, and then he has to recoil that arm and do it all all again. If he misses once, kick him in the nuts. Pick up a stick and you have more of a weapon than he does. :/

people seem to have no idea that pistols are very hard to aim the chances that anyone is gonna be able to hit you while on the run at a distance is a slim chance. Pistols are only viable in short range and even then its really hard to be accurate unless you have tons of experience.

Worse case scenarios were. . .
As a teenager I was at a local store running errands, or putting something in lay away. I come out of the store, and there are these two kids leaning up against the front of the store. I think nothing of it and unchain my bike. Fortunately The Cleveland Brain Trust waited for me to get on my bike and start pedaling before they remembered, "Steal fat kids bike."
So I'm pedalling away, and I hear the pitter patter of footsteps behind me. I look behind me and there are two morons chasing me. I kick it into fatty overdrive and leave them in the dust.

More recently I was walking home from Sea Manky's house, roughly a mile from where I live. I've lived in the neighborhood all my life, so I kind of misguidedly think of this as my neighborhood. I know it like the back of my hand. I've got seniority.
Anyhow, I'm walking home and there's this pack of assholes (five or six, IIRC) walking my way. I'm a naturally courteous, non-confrontational person, so I step to the right of the side walk so we can all pass one another.
This prick walks from the left hand side of his friends, behind everybody else, and full out shoulders me. I inquire, "What the fuck?!"
Fortunately, they weren't looking for trouble that badly; because there's no way I could take down a pack of six guys outside of Final Fight.
Needless to say, it pisses me off watching my neighborhood go to shit. 20 years ago we didn't have the problems with drug dealers and prostitution that we do today. =_=

Damn, that sucks, but I'm glad you got away. Such a shame that these neighbourhoods are getting so bad. Especially in the Scarborough area (Although Warden & Steeles is bordering on Markham) which has been deteriorating badly in the last decade or so.
Call the cops, but I REALLY doubt they can do jack shit about it. Maybe they'll send some cruisers to patrol, but they're absolutely useless.

I am happy to say that I have never been mugged, but once this crazy homeless guy pulled a switchblade on a girl standing next to me at a bus stop at NYU, but he was so out of it that he stumbled off for a second, at which point I grabbed that girl(she was so terrified that I literally had to pull her at first) and we ran a block to the library. Homeless people have always scared me in their unpredictability.
I am glad I drive everywhere nowadays.
This is why I carry 2 wallets. One with all my ID/cards/money and another one with just a 5 dollar bill (to make it believable). If anything like this happens I just give them the one with the 5 dollar bill.

Haha, lucky it was Toronto. If some punks in NY told you they had guns, they probably wouldn't be bluffing! I'm curious, on what street did this happen? I live in a somewhat ghetto area of Scarborough and have never been punked by any strangers on the street. Then again, I don't carry notebooks or highly-desired music devices on me.

If this were in the summer, when I didn't have a winter coat, scarf, and gloves on; and if I didn't have a heavy backpack on me - then I might've done something else. Maybe not go Jet Li on them, but at least throw some kicks/punches before running off. But who knows. I didn't even think about all the self-defense moves I've learnt in previous classes...I was in a bit of a WTF state.
