Since you probably bought it from some stupid company, get a reg version of the os you want and format the thing. Get all the crap software they installed on it off of there.

but is it worth it? couldn't he just uninstall the unwanted stuff?

also, I got a new computer a while ago, some good suggestions here.

Depends on the OEM. Some pack it with bunch of shit that can only be described as malware that is a bitch and a half to get rid of. And besides, reinstalling is a great way to format the HD the way you want (e.g. seperating the OS partition and data partition).

Why can't you just re-install Windows using the disc the manufacturer gives you? Why buy a new version?

Again, it depends on the OEM, but it's exceedingly rare for the OEM to give you the actual install CD for Windows. They usually give you restore CDs, which is just image discs.

BTW, I helped someone with their Compaq laptop a couple of years ago, and that did come with an proper install CD.

They don't give you Windows discs anymore, just restore discs that add all the original crap we're trying to get rid of. Still, it's a lot better to just figure out how to remove anything than buy a second copy of Windows.

While i wholly recommend getting a clean version of XP if you're the type that cares about reg[istry] editing and crap like that, if you just use your computer to web browse, download stuff, and listen to music, just uninstall the unnecessary crap and be done with it.
