I haven't cracked the plastic wrapping yet but I'm already having second thoughts. Just looking at the cover, I'm getting a real bad "Wicked City" vibe from it, which isn't good.

I've only seen parts of Wicked City and it was enough. To boot, my friends constantly reference it when the topic of tentacle sex or any other anime grossness comes up. Not a good sign. :(

Any thoughts? Are my fears valid or should I give it a shot and watch it?

Never seen it, but it's Go Nagai, so there shoudln't be anything really hardcore (this was a TV series anyway, not a hentai OAV), probably just sick-looking monsters with boobs and some perverted shots here and there.

Wicked City never really struck me as "Hentai." It's just like Ninja Scroll (same production studio, too, IIRC) in its extreme use of sex and violence. Wicked City is certainly pretty tame compared to the likes of La Blue Girl or something.

Lyte:

It's not sexual content I'm dreading. It's the demon/alien tentacle sexual content I'm dreading. When I read the description it didn't seem so bad. When I saw the box, I see a naked girl being grappled by some weird thing, ON THE COVER. I'm just saying, that's all. :)

I rather liked Ninja Scroll btw.

Research before you buy next time! :lol

It was an impulse buy. When I saw it I thought to myself, "Holy shit! A whole set for only $19.99! How could I lose on this one?"

I think I just punk'd myself. :(

:lol Me and my brother watched Wicked City in front of my parents. And they had company over.

:lol

When my friend's little brother wanted to try watching an anime movie, Wicked City was the first thing he rented. Afterward, he said he'd never be quite the same. This is pretty funny because the guy is pretty off the wall and crazy and for him to imply trauma from watching a movie is bad news.

Me too. I only have one though. Stupid fraud artists. They delayed my shipment because my mailing address didn't match the billing. I had to put the address on my credit card before they would ship it.

wicked city was my first anime, actually i liked it quite a bit. later i watched demon city shinjuku, which had some of the same characters, and it was good as well. wicked city is just very gorey thats about it.

Devil Lady sucks worse than Wicked City man. Return it. If you want a good series with Demons and stuff look for the 3x3 eyes set it shouldnt be expensive.

edit: That review is totally weird i just found devil lady to be voilent just for the sake of being violent.

The 'interrogation' scene in Wicked City is easily one of the most screwed up scenes in film history.

I mean god dammit.

her whole body was a VAGINA

edit: phew accidently bolded that instead of spoiler tagging it :lol

Devil Lady isn't bad at all. There's some questionable content towards the end of it, but nothing like Wicked City.

Keep in mind, it was a late night anime, so it's very dark and has a fairly low budget.

Edit: One thing worth pointing out, is Devil Lady has a fantastic ending. Something I usually find lacking in anime. It does drag a tad for a few episodes in the middle, but the payoff is worth it.

Just checked out the cover for the collection (I own the single discs) and it is pretty bad. Take a look at the cover for the single editions volume 1, it's a better judge of the series.

I remember when I was a little kid and I was just starting to get into anime; our local mom and pop's anime "section" consisted of only Urotsukidoji, La Blue Girl, Madox-01, Project-Ako 1(the only one where the girls get naked, natch) and Devil Hunter Yoko 1 (ditto.) :lol Crying shame my folks screened the cartoons before I could watch them myself (which didn't happen until a couple years later)

Another fun fact: Here in Indianapolis they used to have a local channel that showed stuff like Wicked City and Golgo 13 UNCUT (barring extreme mosaic on sex scenes and breasts.) Much fun watching one of the Golgo 13 movies featuring this blonde who would orgasm at the sight of bloodshed at 9:00 PM when I was 13. :lol

Hahah, those are two great choices to show uncut. When Teletoon started up here in Canada (the second main cartoon/youth channel) they used to rotate a selection of Manga Video movies complete and uncut around 11pm or so, including Ninja Scroll.

The first anime I rented from a blockbuster video was Outlanders, it had some nudity and such in it. It likely warped my teenage mind in an irrepairable manner.

As for Devil lady... I don't know... Devil man the OAV was awesome in that it was so horrible in english it was funny but I'm not sure what to tell you about Devil lady.

Like I said, I've never seen the Devil Lady anime, but I did read some of the manga along with the original Devil Man manga. There's some sex, but it's a typical Go Nagai story. There won't be any nasty tentacle rape or anything like that. It's probably going to be a lot of demon/monster causes havoc, girl turns into Devil Lady, fight ensues type storylines. IIRC the woman that becomes Devil Lady is a cop. Just think of a darker version of Cutey Honey.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated

Hah, your parents watched Urotsukidoji? They must've shit their pants.

Devil Lady is actually quite a bit different than the Devilman OVAs, which in turn is pretty different from the original Devilman manga.

Devil Lady is more of a horror/mystery than an action show like the Devilman OVAs (well, the 2nd of the 3 anyway - it's closest to the 1st OVA in terms of content). It's kind of Devilman meets Evangelion where Jun (the Devil Lady) is forced into becoming the Devil Lady and fighting while it tears her apart inside and closes her off to her emotions. It's a much slower paced show than your typical modern anime and I personally thing that works for it. She does not love the hunt as the Devilman in the OVAs quickly learns to do.

Shadow, since I don't know anything about your taste in anime and I don't want to make any quick judgements I can't say if it's something I think you'd enjoy or not. If you're the kind of person that has Trigun in their top 5 or just got into anime after Cowboy Bebop on CN or the boom in digisubs, you may not like it, as it really is a different tone than what's currently popular. If you've been around for a lot of the mid-90s anime and enjoy those, you'll probably dig it. Personally, I loved it.
