I open up the envelope my PIN number was in, and out of all the possible random 4-digit numbers I could have possibly recieved, I ended up with:
0001

How the hell can something like that happen? Talk about a security risk.

Needless to say, I'm getting the number changed today.

Or, you could just do what I do:

never have any money. easier to prove you didn't make those purchases when you're poor

meh, saying it here was more of a risk.

besides if anyone was actually stupid enough to try "every single combination" the natural inclination would likely be to start with 1111 since it is on the top left and we start counting with one. Your PIN would be near the end of the possible combinations.

wouldn't you start counting up FROM 1?
0001
0002
0003
0004
...

Is what I'm thinking. Thus, I'd be gone in a second. Doesn't matter though, as I haven't posted my card number or anything, and I'm getting the number changed.

Nope, the natural tendency is actually to start from 1 on the keypad:

1111
1112
1113
1114
....

And after that the machine would have taken the card - game over :)

I would've started with 0001.

Does that make me special?

111-1111....Lois? Blast!

Yes, it's a new account. I'd rather have something completely random so I don't accidentally pick something a friend could figure out.

Just press down on the numeric keyboard real fast:

39827450

pick the 4 numbers in the 'middle'

8274

and now you have a random 4 digit number. Works great for unguessable passwords too :)

Well, it is completely random. You just got a random result of 0001. If it only picked what you considered to be random numbers, it wouldn't be very random, now would it?

I never said it was random. I just don't like the random result :)

I guess the good thing is you should be able to change it anytime hehe

That's probably how you would count. But when you start on a keypad our western "top down, left -> right" mindset has been shown to dictate how we would press.
