So I just got a Dreamcast...

Just picked up a Dreamcast off of eBay and was wondering what games to hunt down. The system came with:

--Sonic Adventure
--Sonic Adventure 2
--Sega Smash Pack
--Jet Grind Radio
--NFL 2K
--F355 Challenge Passione Rossa
--Virtua Tennis
--Ecco the Dolphin
--Soul Cali
--Shenmue Ltd. Edition

Anyone have any suggestions? I missed the Dreamcast bandwagon back in the day so i'm curious to see what treasures DC had.

Do you know how many threads of this kind were made ?

Seriously, you should just do a search for "what games to pick on Dreamcast" or something like that.

Skies of Arcadia
Grandia II
Shenmue II

Three of the finest RPGs this gen. Go get em now. Do it.

Oh yeah. Crazy Taxi- fucking awesome arcade-at-home experience. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 if you can find it. If you have the balls to try the hardest action game this gen, MDK 2.

Any game with the word 'Sega' or 'Capcom' on it.

MDK2
Chu Chu Rocket!
The Typing of the Dead (with keyboard) <------- This will be the surprise of your life.
Skies of Arcadia
Toy Commander <----- Truly great game

And congrats on your buy - the library isn't too deep, but there's a true classic or two in every genre.

You have Jet Grind Radio and that's really all that matters.

Cannon Spike is a very satisfying game to play in quick bursts.

KOF98, KOF99, Power Stone, Soul Calibur, SF3 Double Impact are all good fighters.

Wasn't Shenmue II Japan only? As in good fucking luck playing it on my US DC?

bangai-o if you like treasure. or fun games. whichever.

and i really like sega bass fishing. those are the 2 i can think of right now that haven't been mentioned.

Hey! You like videogames, and not just Nintendo!

You're alright in my book!

:)

Good picks btw.

I wish I had my DC with me...and a VGA box (which I've never owned)...I'll need that.

That's it, tomorow I'm going home (home-home, not apartment-home) and getting my GC and DC!

If you find a DC Gameshark and European Shenmue II it will work. It's the best version of the game simply because the american VA sucks ass as you may soon find out.

Hidden & Dangerous!!! :D

No...no, please don't,

I'd say Crazy Taxi, one of my all time DC favorites, captures the experience of the arcade game perfectly, and Skies of Arcadia:I just snagged a copy last year and it's held up surprisingly well, it looks like a first-gen ps2 game with excellent art direction, and an awesome story, and dungeons that are (ghasp) fun, it's like Zelda married with a traditional turn-based RPG.

Definitely play through Jet Set Radio first. Definitely my favorite game of this gen.

First games I would grab:

Sega Rally2
Berserk
Skies of Arcadia
Powerstone (it's waaaaaay better than the sequel imo)
Chu Chu Rocket
Ikaruga

EDIT// they have different voice acting?

Probably not needed in this case, but, what the hell.

bangai-o, mars matrix, ikaruga and Soul calibur were the games I remember loving.

Well, many of the Dreamcast's best games have recieved better ports elsewhere, but there are still a handful of amazing titles to get. Like, for instance...

blankfrank.jpg

...Sega's best game, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram.

Also, Border Down (probably), Mars Matrix, and Virtua Fighter 3tb.

Welcome to some of the most fun console games this gen. :D

To add to your list...

Chu Chu Rocket
Marvel vs Capcom
PowerStone
Rayman 2 (the BEST version of the title)
Dynamite Cop (good mindless fun)
Samba de Amigo (if you can find the maracas)
Toy Commander

Plus everything else everyone has already said.

You've got a LOT of catching up to do...and we want to hear your impressions on what you think. :D

Try to look for a game called Draconus Cult of the Wrym.
It a hack and slash adventure game with a fun magic system with some nice worlds to explore. Though the game does have frame rate and camera issues though,it is not perfect but easy to overcome if you can tolerate issues such as these. Its the DC's sleeper action/adventure game to hunt down, quite fun. I go back and play it once a year myself.:)

get LeMans and Berserk..

LeMans is still my favorite racing sim, and the dark, tragic world of Berserk drew me into the anime/manga series.

Trying to think of games not already mentioned:

Cosmic Smash
Psyvariar 2
Rez
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Metropolis Street Racer

Yes.

If only the internet rankings remained.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, i'm excited to play all these games. I love Sega :)

One more quick question though, where's the best place to find these games? eBay is obvious but do places like EB or Gamestop peddle used DC software? I've never noticed any...

This was a dilemma for me. To taste the best of what Sega had to offer would mean buying a GC or Xbox just for these games (already have a PS2). I thought i'd go the easier (and cheaper) route and get a DC.

I've enjoyed these games out of my collection. Some of the games have been released on PS2/GC that are better versions though. Others like Tony Hawk and Resident Evil 2/3 are better on the DC than the PSX.

AirForce Delta (fun mindless fun...)
Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 or Pro
Crazy Taxi (One of the best games released for the Dreamcast imo)
Crazy Taxi 2 (not as good as the first)
Daytona USA 2001 (must have)
Dead or Alive 2 (pretty good fighter for 2 player...not by yourself)
Dino Crisis (never did finish this one)
Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future (never did finish this one either, got stuck in the part where you have to guide another dolphin through a tunnel >:| )
Evolution: The World of Sacred Device (my first completed RPG...I thought it was awesome)
Guilty Gear X
Hidden & Dangerous (team based 3rd person shooter...fun but not spectacular)
Ikaruga (great shoot'em up)
Jet Grind Radio (classic)
King of Fighters '99: Evolution
Last Blade 2: Heart of the Samurai
Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
NBA 2K series
NFL 2K series
Resident Evil - CODE: Veronica
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Seaman (weird)
Sega Rally 2: Sega Rally Championship (classic)
Shenmue
Shenmue II (I have the Euro edition with the swap disc)
Skies of Arcadia (great RPG, GC version is better though)
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Soul Calibur (one of the best 3D fighters ever made)
Space Channel 5 (weird)
Street Fighter III: Double Impact (a great 2D fighter)
Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage (you have to play this...great game)
Test Drive Le Mans (the best driving game on the DC)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (better than PSX version)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (better than PSX version)
Virtua Fighter 3tb (classic)

I love you, Tain.

Hidden (or not) gems:

Samba de Amigo + maracas
Cannon Spike

Ikaruga
Tennis 2k2
Rez
Street Fighter III: third strike
The typing of the dead + keyboard
Gigawing 2
Mars Matrix
Shenmue 1 + 2 (pal versions)

BANGAI-O!!!!

Not only is it a 2D shoot em up, not only is it by Treasure, but it's the best thing you've never played.

It's the ultimate game of risk. The more of and the closer to you, the enemys bullets are, the bigger and badder your super lazer/missle super move is.

It''s a super fun crazy time!

OK, I don't want to thread hijack, but I absolutely ADORED this game. However, I never got to really play it 'correctly' because I couldn't afford 2 sets of twin sticks at the time. Are there any PS2->DC pad converters that will allow dual analog play with VO:OT? It's easy enough to google but I don't know if any actually support the dual analogs. I'd have to go get out the old DC if there are.

You own the US release of the game, right? If so, then I think that the game is playable on the DC pad. Rotating with the analog stick is much, much easier if you make sure to only move it to the left or right slightly instead of all the way from the analog center. I've fully enjoyed the game with either controller.

I've also heard that Marz has the dual analog control scheme, and that it kinda sucks, but I haven't tried it myself. I really should get around to buying Marz, but with all the hate around it, I'll get it at $10 or less. Can't help you with any converters.

Hmmm....I might give Marz a shot. As much as I do love VO:OT...something about dual sticks just feels more like the way VO should be played to me.

Thanks.

Call me crazy but after getting so used to the control set up on the Saturn version, I just couldn't handle the DC's loss of two buttons.

Is it true that the N64 import version of Bangaioh is markedly better in control than the DC version? A friend at E3 was telling me that it's so much better, it's almost a different game.
