So I nearly died on Monday :(

Wellll I'm at home now, discharged from hospital at last (it's Friday 3.15 PM here in NZ). Still feeling pretty weak and lightheaded and I should probably be sleeping but hey. Tell me your story, you say! Ok then.

On Sunday I woke up with a really sore left knee joint, and I knew I hadn't slept on it funny or hurt it by walking strange or anything, coz it wasn't that kinda pain. Anyhoo I didn't think anything of it. I went out and about, got my hair cut, bought some stuff etc., then came home and washed my car (this is about 3pm). Straight after washing it, I started feeling freeeezing and my knee really started hurting. I then got uncontrollable shivers and was just lying there teeth chattering and all (it was a perfectly sunny, warm day). So I quickly ran a hot bath and lay in that for about 30 minutes, trying to call out to my dad who was outside doing stuff. Eventually I managed to get out of the bath, and that's when I started vomiting really heavily, it hurt my stomach so much and my whole insides were cramping up every time I vomited. So I just went and lay in bed and tried to sleep, which kinda worked. My dad came in and I told him that I felt like crap etc., he said it was probably just a 12-hour bug or something and I thought it was too. So I was sleeping on and off, all my joints started aching (acheing?) and I kept having to stumble to the bathroom to vomit.

Anyhoo, I didn't sleep much at all during the night coz I was so uncomfortable and hot-then-cold etc., and it seemed like the night went on for days and days. I woke up at about 7.30 Monday morning and the first thing I noticed (apart from feeling even worse than Sunday) was this circley purple rash on my lower arm, just by my right hand. I immediately freaked out because I knew then what it was - meningitis. It's a huge epidemic in our country for some reason, and you hear stories all the time of people losing legs and arms or going into comas or going to their GP and being told to go home and rest up and end up dying. Even this British scientist lady who was over here researching it ended up getting it about 2 weeks ago; she has since had one leg amputated, one arm amputated and all the fingers on her other hand amputated. So it's one scary son of a bitch of a disease.

So I scream out to my parents 'I have meningitis! Hurry!' and my stepmum comes stumbling in, half asleep, and is like 'I'm sure you don't' (they always think I'm making shit up when I'm sick). Anyhoo I show her the rashes (there was now another one on my left arm) and tell her that rashes were the first thing they told us to look out for at school, as a symptom of meningitis. The other symptoms I had were the stiff joints and not being able to touch my chin to my chest (the chest thing is because there's fluid building up in the back of your neck or something so you can't move it), so I was pretty sure I had meningitis. Anyhoo so they call my GP and make an urgent booking, so I had to go have a shower. At this stage I could barely control my arms and legs (I now know why) so I just sat down in the shower for ages and then finally grabbed a towel and dried off. I then stumbled back to bed and had to get my stepmum to dress me, that's how weak I was. Then finally after taking about 10 minutes to get downstairs (sitting on my ass, one step at a time) I get walked to the car and off to the GP. My GP checked over my body, asked me all the questions etc. and said that yes it's possible I have the early signs of meningitis. So they give me a penicillin shot whilst they write up my papers to take me to the emergency ward at hospital, at this stage I'm thinking 'shit, this must be bad'.

We got to hospital and they quickly checked me at the front desk, by this stage the rash was spreading so fast and was all over my arms and hands (it's about 8.45am Monday at this stage). They sit me in a wheelchair and take me to an emergency ward and then it gets really freaky. They start trying to find a pulse and couldn't really find one, so they were all getting anxious. About 2 minutes later I'm surrounded by 7 or so doctors and nurses, all shoving needles and IV lines in both my arms, putting in a cathoter (didn't actually hurt that much, considering the pipe goes *all* the way down your penis into your bladder) and hooking me up to all sorts of machines. They all start talking to each other really fast about my blood pressure, which at this stage was extremely low and really dangerous. So they take my parents outta the room, they're both kinda in shock at this stage because they doubted by self-diagnosis of meningitis but now they realised how fucked I was.

They told me what was happening, that it definitely seemed I had some form of meningitis and it had begun putting holes into all my blood cells. When that started happening (overnight I guess), my heart thought 'oh shit, I don't wanna spread this disease around the body, I better stop pumping' and slowed right right down, hence me having extremely little blood in my limbs and therefore being unable to move. My feet were a disgusting white/purple colour and I was scared I was gonna lose them. So they gave me all this liquid through both arms (IV lines or whatever) at once, to try and increase my blood pressure and get my heart going faster. I guess it wasn't really working that well because they quickly moved me to the resuscitation ward and then did all sorts of shit. At this stage my parents came back into the room and my stepmum had tears streaming down her face, I wasn't that scared until then but I thought 'oh shit they told her something' and freaked out a little. I managed to avoid a lumbar puncture (thank god) because my blood pressure was too low to handle it or something and they already were pretty sure I had meningitis so didn't need to test it that way.

So eventually all the antibiotics and the drugs all kicked in and I stabilised a little, so they moved me to intensive care where they watched me like a hawk and put the hugest IV-kinda line into an artery in my neck, and one just by my wrist (so I have four of the bastards plugged into me now). My stepmum eventually came back with my dad, and my stepmum told me that I came *this* close to dying. The head doctor had taken my parents aside and said to them, if you have any family that can get here right now, you have to get them here, because it's not looking good. That's why my stepmum was freaking out so bad and kept saying 'I've never told you this before but I love you'.

Later that night I got moved to a regular-ish room, still hooked up to everything and oxygen masks and all, but it was a sign that I was stabilising. Then over the past few days they've given me more antibiotics, supplements etc. and I was finally discharged a few hours ago so I'm now home. I'm so thankful that there were no side effects, one of the doctors was obsessed with my feet and kept checking them every 10 minutes because they were frozen and she thought I might lose them. I think I've lost quite a bit of hearing in my right ear, but hey if that's the worst to come of it then thank god.

My final diagnosis was meningitis, caused by meningicoccal type A (something along those lines, I know it was type A). The scary thing is that the vaccine they introduced a few months ago here since so many kids were dying from it, only protects you from type B, so even if I had been vaccinated I still would've been screwed.

WOW just realised how long that story is, must be kinda boring. Sorry if you read it all and found it boring :D I'm just so glad to be hooooome and not have lost any limbs.

Holy shit... that is really scary.

Good to hear that the infection did not warrant any amputations.

Welcome back.

Man, that's going to give me nightmares. Imagine waking up to those symptoms...

Well, good on you for getting through it. Here's your second life, man.

Wow. I don't really know anything about meningitis, but that's scary as hell that it took over your body so fast. This all happened in one day?

Glad to hear you made it out okay. That must have been one hell of an experience.

Well that's great, every time I shiver for no reason or get an ache in my knee I'm going to get paranoid. Thanks.

But seriously, it's good that you're okay, sounds like a terrible ordeal.

(and the thing up your dick really didn't hurt that much? really?)

Dear lord, that's frightening. Very happy to hear that you're, err, alive! o_O You need to party as hard as you can now to make up for the time you missed! :D

What country do you live in, btw?

Wow, as a fellow NZer I'm pissing my pants. I know somebody who died from it, my flat mate has had it, and now you.

dear god that would freak me out horribly. You're lucky you were so on to it with what it was.

I got viral meningitis (sp?) Which is like the lame version of what you got (bacterial right?) That fucked me pretty bad, but I had it for 6 days before I went to a doctor. Did they spinal tap you? I guess not since it would have been so obvious. Fucking spinal tap was the closest I have ever come to actually shitting in my pants. I had to hold the nurses hand and everything. Fucking LEARNER doctor assisting... "Is this where I stick it...."

EDIT: Oh, you dodged a tap, sorry, skimmed then replied. You are one lucky dude. Wait, your a kiwi right? please say auckland.......

I know, it's killing our country at such a scary rate. The public health people came and talked to me and asked me what I had been up to; only thing I could think of was the Saturday night the week before the Sunday that it all happened, I shared a joint and I hooked up with this guy. But they say they typically look back 7 days absolute maximum, so that can't have been it. They (scientists, researchers, doctors etc.) just have no idea how the thing spreads, which is what scares me most I reckon. Sure there's the sharing drinks and saliva thing, but I hadn't done any of that in the 7 days prior and I still got it. They say in most cases they never find out how the 'victim' got it.

It's scary how fast the disease takes hold of your body; they say even 30 minutes longer and I would probably have been in heaven right now, surrounded by hot greek studs who are all baby oiled up.

It felt weird not painful, first of all they put some sort of numbing thing down the shaft (I assume it was a Q-tip/cotton tip or whatever, I couldn't move so couldn't really look) then they do the actual cathoter. The doc who did it was really good, he obviously understood how fragile penises are. When a female nurse took it out, now that hurt for a split second, felt like my penis was gonna explode.

Yea I was lucky enough to already be nearly dead so they didn't need to confirm it with a lumbar puncture/spinal tap. I'm so so glad, because the head doc said at one stage 'ok I'll need an LP kit' and I instantly knew what LP meant, I was so scared. I kept thinking of that guy on Scrubs, the hypocondriach (sp) guy who used to be on Spin City, who always goes into the hospital on Scrubs and says he has something wrong with him, so they gave him a lumbar puncture to get rid of him. And he was like 'I made noises like a whale giving birth'. *shudder*.

And yes I'm in Auckland, haha. Although that scientist lady who lost so many limbs is in Wellington I think ;) (if that's where you are)

Jeez, what a horrifying ordeal that must've been. I'm glad to hear that you pulled through. :)

A kid at my college that I used to play ball with died of meningitis a few years back; it was big news given rarity of the disease.

ARRRGHHH.

I don't want the gitis, not again! did the doctor mention scrubbing yourself with a cheesegrater to avoid it? Cause I'm willing to do that.

Since the thread title mentions nearly dying, I have a nearly dying story too

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~3 years ago I went to the "Warbirds over Wanaka" Airshow with my flying school. We took 6 planes and flew down the island making stops along the way, I flew a few legs on the way down and 1 on the way back. Everybody took turns swapping around the planes which were, 3 2 seaters, 2 4 seaters and a six seater. On the way home as we were leaving Queenstown I say to my instructor "Which plane am I on?" Hoping for the 6 seater as it was the fastest and i was on it for the previous ride. He hums and has then points to the 4 seater and says "You're on that one with me"

We take off from Queenstown right behind the 6 seater we catch up to it 10 minutes later where it is sticking out of the side of a hill, the pilot got spooked, attempted to turn the plane around too low in a valley and stalled, crashing and killing everyone. We had to do mayday calls, circle it, the works. Out of 20 students and instructors, 14 of us came back. That's close enough for me.

Oh man, that's freaky! I'm superglad you're ok now though. So are you feeling fine 100% fine already?

Jeez, I wonder how you got it?

Whatever, you're all good now bro! :D

Ewww... Meningitis... I know first hand about that. I had it when I was a newborn and it nearly killed me. I lost nearly all my hearing in my left ear as a result, so I count myself lucky that's all that happened. I really don't remember anything else about the experience (I'm not sure if it's even possible for someone to remember their baby years... I remember NOTHING about it... only know what I've been told).

Yea I think I've lost most of my right ear's hearing, but as I say if that's the worst I get out of this I'm one happy camper. Who needs both ears anyway, I say! That's just overkill.

I wonder how I got it too, miyuru, nobody seems to know. I had a really quiet weekend so there was no partying, hook ups or anything, which is so totally bizarre to have it turn out the way it did. I'm not 100% fine yet, more like 80% :D Still a tad lightheaded and sluggish.

catfish, that plane story is scary indeed. It's things like that that really make you wonder if someone's watching over you (for me I know who it is :)).

I'm glad you're better now. I pray you get will soon and that no one else contracts it.

Eat some vitamin C and take multi's until you're completly well. Strange bacteria don't play.

Thank God you're ok.

Sorry to hear about your hearing, but honestly when you compare that to what could've happened, it's not that bad. Are they sure that it will be gone for good?

Actually the doctor I told about my ear just said it was most likely an ear infection, so I figure it'll pass. If not though, I won't be too disappointed. As you say, it's a small inconvenience, all things considered.

Glad you made it through that experience.

This just reminded me of a terrible nightmare I used to have when i was a kid. The nightmare has me waking up and looking at my leg and seeing a big hole going through it. Then I'd put my arm through that hole. It looked like some kind of acid was eating away my leg. I'd always wake up once I put my hand through the hole though.

Holy.... I am so very glad that you are alive and well, even if not 100% ....you are able to post here..... glad you beat something that is truly terrifying. and that was an incredibly scary thing that you went through. scared the shit out of me as I read it. welcome home. hope you recover 1000% :D

DAMN. That's a scary story, and a good reminder to pay attention to your body -- you can get very sick, very quickly.

I'm glad you got through it OK, and hope you're back to full health soon.

Boring? That was a fucking horror story :( I still wasn't sure you weren't going to die by the end of the story. Jeez! Glad you're ok though... Don't scare me like that!

Damn, that is one heck of a story. Glad you made it through that ordeal. Must have been awfully scary.

Also, what the hell is a lumbar puncture?

it's a spinal tap. a very very large needle is used to draw a CNS fluid sample from your spinal column for diagnostic purposes.

Holy shit, that story is scary as hell.
There have been a few known cases here in the Netherlands, over the past couple of years, but I've never heard so much detail about it. Thank god I once took that gigantic needle in the ass to protect me against the most common form.

Oh, fuck. I'm a total hypochondriac (I can't even spell it, hah) so now I know I'm gonna freak out if I get a stiff neck or sore knees. Kick ASS that you're still alive, man. That is a wicked story to tell. Seriously, glad you didn't die. :)

Garrett's Story Time! If it's alright, I have a near death story to share too.

I was up in Pismo Beach ATVing with a group of friends last year. Now, when you're ATVing you gotta know a good dune /\ from a bad dune \/ . We were all racing around, I was in third place, and my friend Eric is up ahead by a post. He turns around and starts waving at us - I take this to mean, "Here's the finish line!" so I hit the gas and blow past second place. Suddenly, I see the ground before me just dissapear...I was coming up on a bad dune. I slammed on my breaks and went right off the tip..flew through the air, and full-on crashed into the wall of the dune. My crotch slams against the handel bars, my wrists snap backwards, my stomach and chest scrap and slam against the top of the handel bars, and my body bends around to front of the ATV and my face slams into the bumper. (luckily I had a helmet on!) The ATV stopped dead and slid down the dune with me still on it...when it came to a rest, I just fell off. All the wind had been knocked out of me, I was dizzy, seeing spots, my friends pulled my helmet off to make sure I didn't choke...that was gnarly...

I think that's the closest to death I've ever been (Even worse than when I had Geardia or Appendicitis). Don't really want to get that close again, so I've never been ATVing since and don't ever plan to go again. :lol

Glad you pulled out ok, now you can brag to your future girlfriends that you beat meningitis. Probably that'll just freak them out but atleast you'll score the smart ones. :p

What country was that, btw? :( And does anyone know what meningitis is called in swedish? (Though I should probably be more afriad of legionair decease that has broken out in town)

!!!!! Fuck dude!! That is some scary shit!! (not a boring story by any stretch btw). Glad you pulled through buddy! :)

btw- Did anyone else try to touch your chin to your chest when you read that part? :lol

Oh shit, as if I wasn't freaked out about meningitis already (I live in Auckland, too)! Glad to hear you're OK and didn't have to lose any limbs, I dunno if I could handle that.

Is there any way of preventing it? And the injections against B take like, 5 months until they actually start working, don't they? This shit is insane.

Freestyler, thanks for sharing that story. I'm glad that you've made a almost complete recovery. Do you know if your hearing loss from your right ear is permanent?

And does NZ have a public health care system? I can imagine this costing a boatload if you were in the US with no medical coverage.

Lucky you caught it in time, and knew what the symptoms were. Chances are if you let it sit and see if things got better, you would be sitting in a coffin right now.
