So I'm replaying MGS2...

AlphaSnake

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
And I still absolutely love this game for the most part. I've forgotten so much of the story that I'm not skipping any of the cutscenes, except the insanely frequent Codecs. The 60fps is really, really nice and I also love the item-select interface. I still could care less about who I'm playing with, since both Raiden and Snake control nearly the same anyways -- they just look different. The core gameplay elements are all there and that's what matters. That said:

WOOSH!

Amazing game. I myself loved the story. I basically beat that game in two 7-9 hour sessions, the longest I've ever played a game straight.

^ Cool Jim Lee picture. I haven't played MGS2 yet. I was told to play The Twin Snakes first and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now that MGS3 is out, should I play MGS2 before 3 or does it matter?

I suggest playing MGS2 first, then 3.

I suggest playing mgs2 first. If you played mgs3 before mgs2, mgs2 would loose some of its impact because the plot twists would not have the same impact on you, and you might find mgs2's gameplay lacking do to all the improvements that mgs3 made.

If you really really want to play mgs3 first, i suppose you could because the game works well as a stand alone game considering that its a sequel. You would still understand the plot of mgs3, but if you played mgs2 before you would understand the plot better.

MGS2 is shorter than 3, but is more "densely packed". It has a much bigger percentage of cut-scenes, and the story is a bit wacky. It's also harder than MGS3.

While MGS2 and MGS3 are both clearly better than MGS1, I like both equally.

I myself love MGS2 very much. Some of the story is wacky, but I respect and enjoy some of the risks and weird shit Hideo and his team tried to pull with this game. Post-Modern and very non-conformist to the usual videogame shit. This could have been just another forgettable stealth game, but instead, it's something else.

Some of the story is really cool too. The ending I really liked. Plus, Substance added a hell of alot more to it.

I'm so stuck on MGS3... I went back to MGS2 out of frustration. Played 2 games and now that save is corrupted. The game won't boot at all if the memory card is in there. Take it out and it works fine. Load the save and nothing.

So, it looks like I have to replay the b!tch.

Dacoco, you played MGS2 from the HDD, right? That's where your problem is. You need a patched Hdloader. Your MGS2 save is not corrupted though. Just copy it to a different memory card, and then copy it back to the memcard in slot one. The game will load fine from where you saved.

What I actually got:

The Great Deception will not be forgotten. But with MGS3, at least it's forgiven.

The PSM hit the nail on the head when they said a certain twist in MGS2 would end up making it the most talked about game of this gen. I'm still amazed that they were able to keep Raiden hidden from everyone.

MGS2 was a decent game, the tanker part was awesome. But the Big Shell stuff was kinda crappy (not just because of raiden, I hated the boss battles there (cept the harrier one).

On a related note, I got to The End in MGS3 (been working a lot, so haven't had the time to play this as much)...it's fucking amazing, I tried to kill him for 2 hours, got really close then died. In most games, I would have destroyed my PS2. But instead, I wanted to boot it up again and try to face him for another 2 hours (probably take a lot less time now that I've got a system worked out). The boss battle with The End is better than all of MGS2, a true testement to its greatness.

I thought MGS2's story was fantastic. After playing MGS3, you will appreciate MGS2 and it explains everything in MGS2 that kept everyone confused. And the best part of the MGS series is putting everything together yourself like a jigsaw puzzle and figuring out the total picture.

While I do agree with MGS3 as far as MGS2 you are SO wrong! So wrong even that it's blasphemey! MGS3>>>MGS1>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yep. Silent Hill, Xeno~, MGS series all have this and that's what makes them so enjoyable to story-lovers IMO.

...and after some thought I agree with the person who said MGS2=MGS3 but I think they also = MGS1. All three games have their own individual strengths and each gives me something to remember them fondly by.

I don't have MGS 3 yet.. (I live in Europe) I finished MGS2 about 4 times.
I just adore it's story, in every run through the game you discover some new details about the story.

definetly one of my best next-gen games.

At the end, I liked Raiden more than Snake! End after MGS3:
Big Boss >>>> Raiden >>>> Solid Snake
Am I the only who thinks: BIG BOSS rocks?

Hey, I have a name, and it's not like my post was 10 pages back. :p

To me MGS2 is clearly better than MGS1 in every way (save for having a less straightforward story, and main characters who aren't as interesting). The setting for both games is similar (mainly indoors), but MGS2 has so much more variety in its gameplay, that it makes MGS1 look very simplistic (like the boss fights, for example).

MGS2 and MGS3, on the other hand, are very comparable in many aspects, and different enough that I can't choose a favorite.

I still love all 3, and in fact I've replayed MGS1 the most out of all 3, although that's mainly due to having had it the longest.

I dunno, Solid was a newbie in MGS1 but by the end of MGS2 he seems to have a great sense of humor, is intelligent, and is just a nice cool guy. Raiden & Big Boss are just newbies who become better people.

IMO Solid >>>>>> Big Boss = Raiden

I'll remember your name next time, I promise :P

I think MGS1's strength is in the simplicity of the level design. It's more like an arcade action game on replays than a long stealth adventure. Small rooms, lots of a great boss fighting, and quick pacing (moreso on TTS since less backtracking). It also has the most interesting character(s) with Liquid and even some of the other folk. It might just be nostalgia but when I think back of the fist fight with Liquid on the Rex, the Hind fight on the tower, The Psycho Mantis fight, and the Rex fight itself; there's no way I can put the game below the other two. Those are just too many great memories. When I think of the 3 games now I think MGS1 = characters, MGS2 = story, MGS3 = gameplay.

Ugh. Why?

And anyone that likes Raiden more than Snake deserves some serious genital stomping.

So you're saying you liked Raiden, then? Cool, another fan.

I love MGS2, but you know what? Screw it and go straight into MGS3. It's a much, MUCH better game, and you don't really need to play MGS2 to understand what goes on in MGS3.

Raiden is pretty sweet. All his moves are a lot cooler looking that Snake's and he takes on a carp load of Metal Gears at the end. Snake had trouble with just one in MGS1.

Something I like about MGS2 more than MGS3 are the details and textures, for example the watermelons, flour, rain, etc.... and the textures look way better in sons of liberty, but the story and bosses of Snake Eater > Sons
