I checked the Samsung website and can't really tell the difference between those two.

Terrible idea...

Why would you want that? Seriously. The image quality is not going to impress, there WILL be ghosting, and 4:3 images will be tiny. Get a direct view.

So is switching to 16:9 worth it or should I just stick with 4:3? Oh, what about this?

800 bucks for a tv that isn't HDTV built in kinda sucks. Why would you want to buy a receiver for non-cable stations let alone another one for cable stations.

Standard big box CRT. The old standby.

I'd get a good 27" flatscreen direct view (Wega; $350) and a nice stand ($200), instead.

Yes, can someone explain what Direct View is as well as list some good widescreen TVs (assuming they're worth it)?

Direct view basically means "not projected," i.e. drawn directly to the screen. In this sense, plasmas and flat panel LCDs could be considered "direct view" screens, as well as non-projection CRTs.

As for recommended 16:9 TVs, DCB started a similar thread recently.

My wife got me a 30 incher for my birthday complete with stand. My cable box is on DVI, I purchased a component switcher from Gamestop for $25 and run my GC/Xbox/PS2 through component 1 and my DVD on component 2.

Heaven

Wait a minute... I just copped one of these...

i love it.

Please don't knock the size. Keep in mind I have a whole lot of monitors, LCD screens, 2 projectors... But this lil' guy just keeps on giving. I've played a whole lot of games that I wouldn't have played otherwise, just because I wanted to see how good the games looked on it. XBMC in 720 or 1080i is the sh!t!
