So Mo'Nique wins an Oscar then just disappears

You didn't intend for your post to be like that, but it was like that.

only to you and one other poster because for some reason, you took my praise of her acting skills as me typecasting her or some other bullshit. then instead of asking for clarification, you assumed I was being fucking racist and saying "All black actors just have a natural affinity for churning out Oscar-caliber performances when playing impoverished, down-on-your-luck and violent, angry characters" when nothing in my post came off like that. but i'm done with this conversation and you can stay upset if you want.

I think her being obese is just a small part of it, Melissa Mccarthy has a tv and gets quite a few starring roles.

Melissa McCarthy is white, she appeals to a wide group of white women for the same reason All About That Bass is the #1 song in the country. Same folks wouldn't give the same attention or love to an overweight minority. Easier to identify with folks who look like you, basically. I don't think that's racist or prejudice on their part.

It's the ugly truth, though.

There's a lot of Oscar winners who went on to make garbage:

Anna Paquin
Halle Berry
Adrian Brody
Marisa Tomei.

An Oscar doesn't guarantee a Meryl Streep/Tom Hanks career.

Hard to judge without knowing what the choices were, though.
IIRC, his first role after Jerry Maguire was Boat Trip, which is one of those comedies that thought gays were just so damn funny to justify some really gross homophobia. And that was one of the bright spots.

True. But interestingly it almost always ends up leading to a career of garbage or type cast roles for black winners.

I don't know if an Academy Award is a way to make your career. It is a nice reward, but I don't remember many people that became famous because of their award. Just looking through Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, I don't see many people that went on to get great careers that didn't already have one.

Yup. And refuses to even consider losing weight, and has jumped on the "it's ok to be obese" train.

But to be fair even if she lost weight she'd still be a black woman in Hollywood, and thus irrelevant. In 2-3 years someone will make a thread exactly like this about Lupita.
Or Kerry Washington. I hate being cynical but everyone loves her now because of Scandal.

As someone with no acting experience whatsoever, I would've thought the opposite would be true.

well it really depends, if you're going by the extremes of comedy = doing a silly dance and drama = crying on screen then they're probably tied

but it's quite telling how there are always more dramas on screen than there are comedies, and how many more comedic actors ace the tragedy stuff compared to the other way around

I think to do comedy well you have to know drama, it's almost like drama is a subset of comedy. If you can play comedy well, and you know the beats and the subtleties then playing the tragedy is just the part of your acting repertoire you focus on for that role.

I have no acting experience either, just what i've observed and gleaned from some celeb interviews.

She's lost a lot of weight and is now on the whole health and fitness, do it for my kids, train.

This just reminds me of all the controversy when Howard Stern said the girl from Precious would have no career cause she was extremely overweight and black, and the whole planet hated him for it.

But there aren't really roles for big black women. Most of the time a character defaults to white. And then when they do get a minority actor, it needs to be part of the story somehow. Like when all Spanish character leap into Spanish when scared or just use Spanish catch phrases for no reason.

Gabby's also had a more successful post-Precious career than Mo'Nique, but she's mostly stuck to TV.

Lupita's already been cast in Star Wars. Even if she never worked a day after that, she leveraged that Oscar to get into one of the biggest franchises of all time. Far from just "disappearing".

Leading Oscar nominated role to bit parts?
Bit parts? She was a fairly prominent character on The Big C for four seasons, and she also had more of a role than several other actresses during her season of American Horror Story. Huge roles? No. Not "bit parts" either though.

... I read it that way to.
I mean, it's kinda like saying " I just read the script for this show someone's making called "Breaking Bad" annnnnd you know who I think would just naturally be perfect for this role?!? Malcolm's dad!!! Cause he ... looks like a white dad when I look at him?".

I think that there's a huge difference between having a role be tailor made and perfect for someone ( Snoop from the wire. All she had to do was play herself apparently and that's why she was so great) and saying that an actor just really knocked something outta the park because of their skill (Stringer Bell from the wire).

Buuuuut w/e.
For all we know Mo'Nique is happy with what she has now and is focusing on other stuff. It's not like there's a ton of roles for heavy women OR chocolate women in general.

i don't know why denzel won an oscar for training day. seemed like a fairly average performance.

but then again, alan arkin gave a completely forgettable performance in that affleck-directed film you can't even remember, and still somehow won the oscar.

the oscars are shit.

I'm talking Hollywood films

I also don't think she's a particularly good actress (compared to Mo'Nique, who floored me in Precious), so she's actually doing quite well for herself, given her talent limitations.

Absolutely loved her in the Parkers growing up and I thought she was fantastic in Precious as well. I'd love to see her in the media more as she definitely can act.

Yup, Hollywood is really racist, and they aren't exactly knocking down her door for roles.

Her role in Precious was pretty shocking. The last scene gave me chills and you could see Mariah Carey break character.
