I saw that both on the our colony video and the Gamespot video. I'm not tech wiz, but isn't that super powerfull? What's the PS3 supposed to be able to do?
So what kind of funky math gets us to this number? CELL(1-8 config) is supposed to be around 256GFLOPS right? Even if the tri-core Xenon CPU was that amount, how the hell would the GPU account for the rest? Is this some kind of crappy "functional equivalent" number? Stupid number whores...sounds like XBOX's 300micropolygons and Jaguar's "Do the math" crap again.
Hell no it can't, it's just MS attempting to combat Sony on a PR level. Real world gameplay induced degradations MS, look into them sometime as I hate maximum theoretical specs. Sony's PS3 wont even reach the teraflop plateau.
Remember when they said Xbox 1 had 80Gflops of computing power, making it equal to a Cray Super Computer? It's bullcrap. Or rather, misleading use of already fuzzy terminology.
The flops IBM talks about when they say the Cell has a peak of 256Gflops is not the same type of operations that MS talks about when THEY say 1 Teraflops
I think the term "NVFlops" has been used before in regards to this. Some kind of specialised calculations made by GPUs that while technically floating-point, and technically are in the billions, are not in any way related to CPU-horsepower.
