So what else has the Shadow Hearts team done?

PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
So over the past few weeks I completed Shadow Hearts and SH:Covenant, and they were two of the best RPGs I have played, aside from some really grating teleport puzzle dungeons. I already picked up the Koudelka import for about $8, but don't know if I'll ever get to that.
So what else has been done by them? Any future products?

Talking about Koudelka, what's that game like, compared to Shadow Hearts games?
EDIT: nevermind, just saw it has 59% on gamerankings, ho-hum

Not much in the past, probably nothing too major period.

Don't know about any future products yet, either. So...just stick with the Shadow Hearts "trilogy" for now.

Didn't they do Faselei, too? IIRC it was a mech turn based strategy game ala Front Mission for the NGPC, and supposedly a fantastic game. I remember it being my most wanted game for the system for such a long time. At the time it was pretty rare and went for quite a bit on ebay, though, so I never got ahold of it, and apparently another shipment was released, so it's went down in price. They also did Dive Alert for the NGPC as well, which was a pretty big dissapointment to me.

Don't use Gamerankings to judge the quality of titles, thanks

But the game isn't very good, anyway. It wants to be a mix of Resident Evil (exploration) and FFVII (battles), and fails miserably in both areas, but the story is very strong, especially given how experiemental the game is

Damn. I'd like to see more, as SH2 was really damn entertaining. Also some of the funniest bits I've seen in a game in a while. Don't know where they could go somewhere with the SH story, though.

good assessment. had really good voice acting for the time, and really funny character dynamics. the main (title) character is a bitch, the other guy is naive, and then the other guy is a priest. koudelka makes fun of both of them constantly. it's greatly amusing. to me, anyway.

also i am quite fond of the music, but it seemed to be a very divisive issue at the time.

it's a kind of a neat, weird little game that wasn't really that well made but was interesting. showed promise! and that promise has been fulfilled.

btw, does anybody know anything about the changeover from sacnoth to nautilus?

The Shadow Hearts team (assuming it's the team behind Koudelka)...isn't that the same people who left SNK and formed their own dev studio?

They were actually a working part of SNK... in fact the only part that survived at Aruze. Though they changed their name to Nautilus now.

I can tell you is that SNK's logo is on my copy of Koudelka, haha.

Now I remember...when SNK when was bankrupt and bought by Aruze, Aruze tried to change their whole operation into making those "video pachinko" things or something, but the sister of the president of SNK put up some money and bought the company back along with her brother or something strange like that, and then sued Aruze for stealing their IPs. Sacnoth was the only part of SNK that stayed with Aruze because they were a separate studio to begin with. Sounds like something out of a bad movie

actually, it's people who left square. it was run by ... i don't remember the dude's name, but he did the music for secret of mana. or he at least directed koudelka.

sorry, that's all i got. ^_^;;

Hiroki Kikuta?

I don't know much about the whole Aruze/Sacnoth/Nautilus deal, I just know of Koudelka, Shadow Hearts, and SH2... I'm really hoping for an SH3, I absolutely loved the second (though have never played the first, watched my girlfriend play a whole lot of it though). An SH3 set during WWII would be awesome.

Well the one thing I didn't really get was
Why did Karin end up going to the time to meet up with Yuri's father?
But I guess the ending they gave could let go for another title. And if it was WWII it would be a much refreshing take on WWII compared to the other stuff we get now.

Isn't it because she knew she's Yuri's mom, so she chose to go?

Okay, I definitely missed something then.

I thought that they just got randomly displaced throughout time - Karin gets sent back and coincidentally runs into Yuri's father, and Yuri gets sent back to the beginning of Shadow Hearts 1... but I probably have no idea what I'm talking about, I liked the other ending better :P

Oh yeah, I think I got it all wrong...they left Square and formed a new dev team over at SNK, that sounds more reasonable...

I figured that about Yuri (nice new model of his SH version too), I just don't see where the whole Karin thing comes from.
I should have gathered that there was another ending (like SH), but I wouldn't even know what to do to get it, haha.

They all chose where/when to be sent back to. Like how Anastasia didn't end up back in Russia, but with Kurando instead. Yuri went back to SH1, to achieve it's good ending:)

IIRC, Karin saw an old photo Yuri had of his family, and she was the mother(?) in the photo.

edit: oops, you were refering to another ending in SH2. There is one, where
Yuri is alone on a cliff with all his memories lost.

Right now, they're doing a re-issue of Shadow Hearts 2 for Japan (or is it already out?) with a few new areas/quests and items. That indicates that the series is still alive in some regard, so I wouldn't be surprised if they also do SH3 eventually. I hope so!

edit: Or, uh, they're not?

Woah!??!?! Please tell me this is true. SH2 with new content! Is it like an international version or something?

*edit* There's nothing about this on their website currently and it's not listed anywhere that I can find (Famitsu/Amazon). Are you sure this exists?

You know, I was just looking for the link so I could post the link to the screenshots, and now I can't find any mention of it on their website, either. The crazy part is that I remember visting the website and looking at the screenshots - it showed some new equipment and a new area in the Nemeton ruins. And now I can't find that page anywhere ... I wonder if it it was canceled or something?

I bought Koudelka off ebay around 2 years ago, but I never received the game.

By the way, I think it's kind of funny how SHII is called SH: C in NA only on the box and disc covers, while in-game it's referred to by its Japanese name of SHII. Then again, there were several instances where they didn't bother to translate some Japanese text.

Indeed it was. I still play it today. Addictive little SRPG. Kind of funny how everything you controlled was a toy.

Shadow Hearts 2 Director's Cut (PlayStation2 the Best)
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-43-77-1-15-shadow+hearts-70-gu8.html

but it does say:
The Director's Cut of the game includes several new areas and functions.

Yay! It would be nice if they added a bunch of stuff like SO3DC or SMT3: Nocturne, but as it's a budget release I'd guess the chances are low.

But since it seems to be a small team who really love what they do and are very fan-friendly, I'm guessing there'll be a few nice treats :D

Back on topic I don't really seeing them do a SH3 since SH2 very much ends the series, but they could go off on a side-branch like how SH is a new series with it's own unique gameplay style but it's still connected to the Koudelka world.

that's not the first time that sort of thing has happened, but i can't honestly think of any others off the top of my head.

i guess they didn't want people to think there was a pre-requisite SH1 to play first. whatever. the titty-based cover was more marketing genius. fortunately, i think the game's doing OK. potentially OK enough to greenlight the next sequel, i hope, although i have no idea if that's true or not. it's selling slowly but steadily thus far:

sep PS2 SHADOW HEARTS:COVNANT $862,661 17,355
oct PS2 SHADOW HEARTS:COVNANT $819,790 17,227
nov PS2 SHADOW HEARTS:COVNANT $300,832 6,089
dec MIDWAY PS2 SHADOW HEARTS:COVNANT 12,844

LTD = 53,515

no, it's not a stellar set of numbers, but hopefully the slow burn will continue and get somewhere decent before they have to discount it.

They could move the story across the atlantic and put the focus back on Koudelka, with WWII coming up and all. Did they ever finish up her
and her son's
story? Can't remember.

All they did was go to America to meet up with Halley's father. But I don't recall if they said who that was, or if it mattered.

I think the Japanese release made it to about 100-120k before it dropped off charts. Though I really don't know if that's good enough for the team/publisher. I mean SH2 looks like it cost a nice sum to make with the FFX quality visuals, full voice acting, FMVs. When a Nippon-Ichi game clears 100k you know they're out getting drunk that night in celebration, but making guesses on the SH team is tough.

Bebpo said:

i wouldn't go so far as to say "FFX quality." they're solid, but repetitive, and lots of the environments are small. i mean, it blows shit like suikoden IV out of the water, but honestly i think they were very smart about how they went about things. not to say i don't share your doubts ... as much as we talk about costs producing games, i don't think anyone really knows on average the economics of these things well enough to judge whether this game could be a profit or not.

BTW, ferricide, sorry for doubting you before. Baten Kaitos is one of the most lifeless, boring RPGs I've ever played. There's something about the animation and voice acting that just makes me want to pull my hair out. The fact that I'm playing it and RE4 at the same time isn't helping, either.
