The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Ordering anything for Tiger Direct is asking for pain and agony.

I got a good deal on 200 GB external Western Digital, I think it was $100 after the rebates.

I have only had it for a few months, but it has never given me a problem yet and it is fast.

I only use it to save tv torrents, but those suckers add up pretty quickly.

ha, i was just going to post a topic about this, I need room for my tv torrents and netflix ripped movies and all my psp shit, the encoded movies take up alot of space, Im also looking for an external HD, 200+

Just don't buy a Maxtor. Every hard drive I've had fail on me (usually in about 2 years of use) has been a Maxtor. (The second time I didn't even realize that was the brand in my off-the-shelf PC, _MAN_ I was mad when I found out too late.)

I've always favored Western Digital, personally.

from what i heard and from my experiences so far.....Seagate seems to be the one who King kong aint got shit on.

suppossedly most reliable and most quiet.

So far for me, my seagates have been reliable and they are VERY quiet

peace

So I thought Western Digital was near the top and I ended up with 80GB and 160GB external drives from WD.

Needing a backup drive for my WDs, I decided to buy an "ACOM" 250GB as it was pretty cheap compared to the rest. I was in line at compusa thinking, I'm gonna regret this.

It's been almost a year, and guess which one has been the most reliable? Yup, the ACOM.

The unit feels durable, & is smaller whereas the WDs feel like they got big boxy cheap plastic around them.

Plus, the ACOM always works when I insert it into my laptop whereas the WDs always have to be inserted from the start when my laptop is booting.

And, the old 80GB one died - thank GOD I had the contents backed up on the 250GB.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have 2 copies of anything important - even if the files are on 2 shitty drives, vs. 1 "reliable" hard drive.

The first rule of drive club?
All hard drives break

I've got a couple of 200+ gig Maxtors that are spinning along just fine after a couple years, but if I were to get one right now, I'd go with the 400 gig seagate.

i only use maxtors, and mine all work great, even my old (old {OLD!}) 10GB maxtor...

basically, every brand of drive is prone to dying, so choose based on price or performance!

The only brand I have anything against as of yet is the IBM line - never buying a hd from them again (if they are still making them).

My maxtor and new seagate as doing pretty well so far.

what are some websites that i can look into to compare prices?
ironically my IBM desktar is doing fine, 2 years and running. but i must get a 250GB drive and back all that up, just in case.

Argh. I've been having PC problems the past week or so (if you're interested), it looks like either XP or the hard drive screwed up the boot partition. (The HD itself has been acting funny since anyway, taking a LONG time to seek files.) Tonight was a last-ditch effort to see if I can fix it myself before dragging it in to take advantage of the PC's warranty, and while I was in the BIOS config, it listed the HD type... a bloody Maxtor.

That potentially makes _3_ Maxtor HDs that've bombed out on me. That's really just... beyond reasonability. Four months of reasonable use, and already a major error? If it were any other brand, I might've excused it as a potential "1 in a Million, just happened to have the perfect situation come together to cause a problem," but knowing now that it's a Maxtor drive, it feels like that "1 in a Million" chance is more like a "1 in 3."

nitewulf: Pricewatch is one, I think Pricegrabber is another.

Everyone has had problems with specific brands of HD's

I still have 2 60 gig Deskstars' running in my system, 3 years and never had a problem. Never had a problem with Maxtor, WD or Seagate either. It's just bad luck I guess.

Right now I'm running a WD74GB Raptor as my main drive (soon 2 in RAID0 :D) but as you're in the business of wanting a lot of space, I wouldn't exactly recommend these for you.

I'd never buy anything Maxtor ever again losing 200gb of data to them

Same here, 250 gig SATA maxtor drive crashed with all my data. I got it replaced by Dell for free, but they took away the pleasure of shattering it with a crowbar because they wanted it back. Go with WD.
