So, what is there to do in NC?

needs to show more effort.
graduated from college, moved to the Research Triangle Park area in Raleigh-Durham for work, don't know anyone here and I'm bored.

searching the internet for a popular night place to go to and meet people lead me to an abandoned warehouse type place that had long since been closed... so I'm hoping gaf can provide a little more up to date suggestions.

head to chapel hill on a weekend night. there's enough to keep you busy for weeks. i recommend the cellar bars. good music and lots of women. the booty clubs are a waste of time.

I just moved to NC, and I have the answer: NOTHING. Everybody goes to bed at like 9 :lol

Although I don't know what it's like in the Raleigh area, it's just that way here in Asheville. Does anybody live in Asheville around here? If so, then why the HELL is it called "Ashevegas?" Gambling is fucking illegal here; it makes no sense!!

And there's always the mountains to explore, if you're into that. There's gotta be a few crazies out there to meet.

i despise north carolina.

it will kill you. run.

ride around town during the day i guess. if you like that kind of thing. most people just get drunk and things of that nature. i don't, but people do.

I only knew the Charlotte area, there were a couple cool clubs. Almost every town is going to have your typical bar scene. Smaller bars with local musician and people, still good for meeting people.

But yeah, it's not an exciting state, that's why I left at least.:P

masturbation can only last one so long... eventually it gets raw and painfull (or so I'm told by someone that once did it 23 times in one day for reasons I still don't understand)

my shirt is already off, and has thus been twirled.

Darth Togo, any specific bar/club reccomendations? Trying to compile a list here of places to map out and drive to. I'm terrible at just driving around without getting lost so I need to have a 'plan' as it were to have any hope of getting back home.

oh also, I'm not asking solely for night life stuff. That just seemed like a good guess to me as to meet people. And while meeting a girl would be nice, its not a purpose I'm hellbent on achieving. If I meet someone I like at a bar or something, then hooray.

but also I just need to find a place to meet people. Seeing as I've left all my friends to come to NC, its time to make some new friends but I've walked around my apartment complex and have rarely seen anyone around my own age (20-25)

also, just anything that exists that might be fun. I'm trying to go someplace new/trying somethign I've never done each weekend this summer. Last weekend I went to a game shop and played... I forget... warmachine or something? I had never played a miniature game like that and wanted to try one out.

There are a LOT of coffee shops here, I've noticed. Like one in every block. The question is whether or not you want to meet... those kind of people.

I don't really know what kidn of people I want to meet >_<

beeing a geek and all I figured the people at the goblin whatever game shop would be my kind of people. I was wrong... very wrong.

Those people took the definition of geek to levels I didn't know existed in real life. They were nice people and all but just uh... not my kind of people.

I'm starting to think my crowd isn't so much geeks as it is bastards with geek tendancies.

anyone know anything about these places? (I'm just browsing around citysearch, looking for places to try)

Orange County Social Club
Kings Barcade and Tavern
East End Martini Bar
Cat's Cradle <- I gotta go here at least once... just cuz it has the same name as an awesome vonnegut book ;)
He's Not Here

citysearch also had the following two places that I noticed but didn't have descriptions... making me think that they're more adult entertainment... in which case I'm not very interested but I wanted to make sure:

Bedz at Kryptonite
Masse Lounge

Asheville is the whitest, most hippy-filled city in the country. If you're racist and love weed, this is totally the place for you.

Screw all you NC haters it's a great state. Too many Christian nutjobs in my opinion but other than that the people here are really nice.

I don't go to Raleigh much, but if you're ever in Greenville or go up to the Tidewater area I can tell you some places to hit up.

Oh yeah, I'm geek city, but I could never hang around an actual geek in real life. I've only known one huge geek, and it was only a one-time conversation. He came up to me and started dropping some wrestling trivia on me -- for no real reason at all, btw -- and I'm like "yeah, wow, cool" and then it somehow turned to movies, and he was citing Cary Elwes' best performances and quoting lines from The Princess Bride. It was like the INTERNET COME TO LIFE. I should've tried talking about video games with him though. :(

I haven't seen the potheads, but I have seen the racism, and it was actually pretty surprising. I used to live in Florida, and people would do it with reckless abandon there... but not like here :lol And from my experiences, most people I've come across are into prescription drugs like perks, but there's still a few crack or meth addicts around. One time we picked up some lady standing by the store, and she was talking about her meth lab being burnt down :lol, and then of course we were like "so you do meth?" and she said that "no, I prefer crack." I love that lady.

the skylight is pretty awesome. chapel hill also has cd alley which is all the friends you need.

The pour house in raliegh is a pretty fun bar at times.

for your daytimes hours all the shops you'd ever need are in the area, and some nice parks. i dunno what people do besides work in the daytime really

Which corner of the Triangle do you live closer to?
Durham, Raleigh, or Chapel Hill?

my apartment is in raleigh, but I think I'm basically right on the broder of durham/raleigh.

skylight I've seen mention of, I'll check it out. Had't heard of pour house but I shall add it to my list ^_^

whats cd alley?

I just moved to Raleigh 3 months ago. Theres a few decent places to hang out downtown. Try Hibernian or the Redroom. Those areas tend to have a lot of people hanging out and drinking and what not.

Other than that I dont know to much. I work all the time.

Good luck :)

OK, you're in the Brier Creek area-easy enough. Nice enough place to live if you work in RTP proper, since the commute is easy (despite TW Alexander's shitty roads).

First of all, if you're just looking to dork around and go bar-hopping, hit up Franklin St. in Chapel Hill. I recommend actually starting the night with dinner at Crook's Corner (get the shrimp'n'grits!) and then working back to Franklin street. There are lots of nice bars and hangouts there.

Personally, I found the best way to actually meet people is to figure out your interests and work from there outwards. I'd start by grabbing a copy of the Independent, seeing what looks cool, and stopping back. If you're not sure where to get a copy of the the Independent (I usually get my from an area resturant, a great place to start would be the Salsa Fresh on Duraleigh down 70 (take a right past the CompUSA). There's heaping of activity listings in the magazine.

For outdoorsing, the Triangle is pretty nice. Biking joggin, boating, hiking, walking, or just bumming around and having a picnic, there are some snazzy open spaces in the Triangle. If you're into any of that, just post here with which activity and I'll be able to find you someplace great to get started to do it.

I've been a couple of times to the Hibernian downtown. Nice place, would definitely recommend a visit if you're out with friends. Good food, good drinks, good atmosphere.

Raleigh, eh?

Then you can head down to Hillsborough St.
There are some hangouts along NCSU's strip there.

Find some local weekly papers and see what's going on.
Check out the museums, book stores, parks, etc.

Hillsborough Street is nice and all but I think UNC's Franklin Street is a bit better of a "college strip" for hanging out than it.

Of course, nothing, and I mean NOTHING sucks as much as Duke's strip. God, going near there twice (To eat at the Blue Corn Cafe, which is superb, and again, to see Madeline Albright speak at a bookstore there) made me long for the days of Mike's Beer Barn and Bullwinkle's at FSU's Tenneessee Street. Just that bad. >:(

Duke's West Campus is 10/10 on the ghettometer, that's for sure. Of course, that's where they put the freshman dorms. :D

One thing any Triangle resident needs to know-all other things being equal, Durham is worse than Chapel Hill or Raleigh. ;p

Durham as a whole might be. I don't get into non-statisical claims about "crime" when talking about the Southeast US for what, I would hope be, obvious reasons.

There's probably not too much merit to that statement-heck, I live in Durham now and it's fine. I just like to make fun of Durham. :)

I basically live at briar creak (I could walk there) Ashley Park Apartments on little brier creek road.

I actually drove over to chapel hill tonight to walk around and parked right near franklin street. (took me forever to find parking...)

maybe I just need to be more outgoing, but the places on franklin street that I saw looked too small. I guess I should have expected that since I think I was technically on the UNC campus? The problem with small places is people that I saw had a group that went and got a small table, etc. I didn't see anything that looked open/crowded enough to just go up to a random group of people and say whats up without getting looks of, 'who the fuck are you and why are you talking to us.'

Not to mention that it isn't 'college season' so most of the college kids are gone. I swear, most of the people I saw on franklin street had kids =\

interests eh... interests is my problem, I don't have any that work well for meeting people =P

interests include anime, video games, computers. Hence why I'm trying to branch out into areas that aren't of my direct interests.

is this the independent that you mentioned? http://indyweek.com/durham/current/

oh, also need to find a place to play racquetball... perhaps find a league or something. There a Y around briar creek somewhere?

edit: I see that yes there is... and learn that there are far more ymca's in this country than I ever imagined.

Yeah, that's the magazine I was referring to. Ashley Park is a decent place for decent prices, nice work-but that traffic near there is a complete bitch. You *do* have an EB in walking distance though, which is nice.

If you're into anime, you might want to PM FnordChan-he was, at one point, out near UNC and he could probably suggest some related activities.

As for videogames, that's a pretty solitary thing. :)

If you work for a certain Big EMployer in the Triangle, then I would highly recommend their rec center. If not, then the Y is good and you should be able to get
a good match. I bet there is a more-offical racquetball club around too, if you search the internets you might find a number or email.

I do know that one of the more-hopping social sports in the Triangle is Ultimate Frisbee (we just call it Ultimate). Guaranteed brutal exercise and at least four-six parties a year of druken shenanigans.

I've really never had the traffic you speak of. I work for a smaller company in the triangle called randrop geomagic, and I've never had bad traffic. Alexander is always basically deserted between here and miami.

and video games wasn't a solitary thing at my college but there are never really any 'clubs' so to speak for one to join. In the dorms, one could just walk up n down the halls and probably find something to play. I wasn't expecting to be able to find anythign in that area though.

never really played ultimate frisbee, who would one talk to to join such a gathering?

If you're not sure where to get a copy of the the Independent (I usually get my from an area resturant, a great place to start would be the Salsa Fresh on Duraleigh down 70 (take a right past the CompUSA).

I live right across the street from Salsa Fresh. So if you do go there please wave in my direction.

feel free to invite me to any parties/gatherings :D

In a similar vein to ultimate frisbee there are a few disc golf courses.

http://www.radl.biz/index.htm is the site for the Raleigh Area Disc League.

I'm not a member but I live a short walk from Cedar Hills park and during tournaments there are hundreds of dudes out there, can't even walk the dog. I'm a big park guy and there are great parks all throuh the Triangle.

http://www.tfda.org/ is a site for ultimate, only played casually so I'm clueless about joining a group.

You've already looked into racquetball and there are a few other places -like gold's gym and other clubs- outside of the Y but it would probably be best for getting in a league.

Finding people to play video games with outside of college... yeah, that don't happen much. How long have you been here and where from? Howl's Moving Castle has just left town as far as I know, so If you didn't catch it, ya missed it! Somebody at work has to play games. It's the fate of the mid-twenties to lose old friends and be doomed to acquaint with co-workers.

Salsa Fresh is cheap and awesome(Strickland off of Six Forks). I hardly miss California - possible sarcasm. My wife will be working some at the Skin Sense day spa at Brier Creek after August so you could go there and she would touch you naked for a price - definite sarcasm.

I'm from about an hour away from chicago, been here a fouple weeks now. Only one of my co-workers plays games and the only one he plays is counter-strike. Most of the others are just kinda, 'buh? video games? those are for kids right?'

I actually get along great with my co-workers, but they just wouldn't work as social friends. Most are married and older. So yeah we talk and joke at work, and I eat lunch with a couple of my 'work friends,' but I wouldn't really want to do something with them outside of work.

does your wife give happy endings? ;P

I'm from palatine. bout an hour nw of chicago. other towns one might recognize that are kinda near me: rolling meadows, schaumburg, naperville (thats a little futhter away though).

edit: I'm right near woodfield mall if you've ever heard of it. like ~10 years ago it was the biggest mall in the US, possibly the world, I think. And I think it might still hold the title of largest mall in the world shelf space wise. As in, of all malls, it has the most shit one can buy.

I can't remember the name, I didn't know the kid personally. friend of a friend at my highschool (Fremd in palatine)

I just moved to NC, so I don't know of anything to do... but if any of you find yourselves near Carrboro, feel free to stop by my place and face my wife and me at Mario Kart! :D

I'd say drive down and visit Atlanta, though I'm not sure how far it's from the triangle. Or check out South of the Border and get some fireworks :P We used to drive through NC on my way down to Florida when I was little, I don't remember much about it except for some people rudely commenting on our accents.

Welcome to Carrboro; I'm just up the road in Chapel Hill. It's a nice area, as long as you don't show up expecting non-stop urban adventure.

I belatedly noticed this topic, but gave Slyan the anime hook-up via PM. For anyone else interested, I hang out with the Carolina Otaku Uprising in Chapel Hill, there's Duke Anime (never been to a meeting, but they seem pretty cool), and finally there's the Triangle Area Anime Society over at NC State (haven't been in ages).

For video games there's nothing too exciting to mention. Buy-Rite was finally shut down (ha!) and the arcade scene is less than jumping. If you really want to challenge the kids at DDR and Initial D, head over to Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh. For other sorts of gaming, there are several good local shops - I'm quite fond of Cerebral Hobbies in Chapel Hill - as well as a UNC gaming club, the Carolina Otaku Role-Playing Society of Evil. Yes, it's a silly acronym. CORPSE meets for board games at UNC every Saturday night during the regular school year and just might manage to get off it's ass and have summer meetings one of these days.

Movie Minder is a nice, ad-free local listing of theatres and what movies are currently showing. For some reason some of the larger (read: scarier) theatres aren't mentioned, but for everything else it's pretty damn great. There are plenty of good arthouse theatres in the Triangle; for mainstream flicks I prefer The Lumina in Chapel Hill, a nice little independent theatre on the edge of town.

Speaking of movies, if you want to rent a flick you want to go to Visart Video, which has several locations in Chapel Hill and Durham. Raleigh I dunno about.

There's a ton of good used book shopping to be had in the Triangle, with Nice Price Books (which also sells used music and video) locations in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh, as well as The Bookshop in Chapel Hill (one of the best used book stores I've ever been to), The Avid Reader in Raleigh, and Books Do Furnish A Room in Durham; all three are near respective Nice Price locations, so a trip out to any of those shops is worth your while. For comic books I recommend Chapel Hill Comics or the Foundation's Edge if you're in Raleigh.

On the sports front I've known some friends to be into Rainbow Soccer in Chapel Hill. I also have a friend who is heavily into ultimate frisbee; if you're interested in giving it a go, drop me a PM and I'll see if he knows where you could find a pick-up game for the not-so-hardcore.

Tune into the local college radio stations: WXDU 88.7 FM Durham (where yours truly DJs), WXYC 89.3 FM Chapel Hill, or WKNC 88.1 FM Raleigh.

Live music abounds in the area. The Cat's Cradle in Carrboro is legendary, but be sure to also check out other local clubs such as the Local 506 in Chapel Hill, King's Barcade and The Brewery in Raleigh, and Ringside in Durham. There are tons of other small clubs and bars, particularly on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. It's not my scene, but my friends like to hang out at Hell and the Orange County Social Club in Chapel Hill. Finally, keep an eye on alt.music.chapel-hill for the heads up on local happenings. Alternately, read The Independent.

For music shopping, all you really need is the CD Alley in Chapel Hill. Alternately, any of the Schoolkids locations throughout the Triangle are decent, if not up to the CD Alley's high standards.

Good food abounds. If anyone's curious, I can hold forth on Chapel Hill eateries at length. Either way, be sure to take a trip out to Maple View Farm outside of Chapel Hill sometime to sit on their front porch and eat incredible ice cream.

And that should be plenty to get any new arrival to the Triangle started. Welcome to North Carolina! Don't worry, the overwhelming heat and humidity recedes eventually, I swear.
