So what's bad about WOW?

All my friends are playing and want me to start playing. Problem is I have a huge backlog of games not to mention I just got laid off my job. So tell me what's bad about WOW so I can convince myself not to get it.

Oh oh, and lets not forget you are obliged to use P2P to download the patches. So if not behind a firewall, you are sending you IP to a shitload of people.

Also, the game takes forever to install and patch. :lol

You ever read about those people that never leave the house and just play the game and rot and never shower and get smelly?

This will be you if you play this game. Why did I do this to myself??!

I know... one... more... quest................................ AHHH

Server lag (item buying, AH lag ect... really bad now in IF due to xmas vendors) , crashes (mostly servers going down, game barely ever crashes), various annoying bugs (bugged quests, skills (cheap shot), instance bugs).

The game is great but does have quite a few flaws.

Dude... I've lost so much sleep because of that.

"I'm just gonna head back to Ironforge to cash in..."

*Hour and a Half Later*

"Well... I need to see if this new hammer WORKS!"

Now don't get me wrong, i'm level 35 and will play to 60.. but the game is definitely getting old.

Go to new town, get same 'kill x of theses quests' that turn into 'kill x of same thing but slightly tougher' which goes into 'kill boss of x'.

THEN there's drop quests which involve killing 50 or so of the things you just killed in the hopes they're they're going to drop 8, 10, even 24 of this particular quest item you need just so you can take them back to someone else and have him tell you to go get more crap.

Essentially you've got maybe 5 quests that the game cycles you through to the point where stupid fed ex quests actually feel like a change of pace.

Reall the first 30 levels or so are awsome, then its a slow decline to 60 where you're just doing it so you can compete in the battlegrounds :P

Dungeons? Instances? Raids? Professions? Skills?

I dunno. I think you're taking this on a much too linear path.

I find it interesting that I'm grouped with someone different like... every hour. It's nice.

Agreed with Vark, unfortunately. I saw this hilarious quote from some Blizzard dev about how every quest will be a unique experience. They obviously failed to follow through on that particular promise.

I still keep playing, of course. Two characters even.

To the OP: I would suggest skipping WoW for now. You'll presumably have a lot of free time while unemployed, and WoW could easily take a majority of it. That's time you're not searching for a new job, and WoW could be a bad habit to form.

Then again, you could say you're getting it out of your system while you can. :p I'm just wary of MMOs... I'm starting school soon, and am not sure I can balance it, work and WoW in an appropriate manner.

Are you on PvP server? Every quest is a new one too me....... cause usually the horde is involved somehow.....

Also people don't usually read the quests. There's a ton of story in a lot of quests and people (I do it all the time) just glance through to find out what we're suppose to do. Though the platinum disks and the whole Creators saga that starts in Uldaman is really cool so far and I'm hoping to learn more.

Oh and Gadgetzan=HELL

I dunno, I feel the exact opposite. I'm at level 31 now and I like it just as much (probably more) than when I was level 1. This is the first MMORPG since Ultima Online that I will get to the level cap. Every other game I've stopped 1/3 of the way through due to boredom... the last too offenders were CoH and FFXI. Though I think a lot of it has to do with PvP. :)

And the crazy part is WoW is only going to get better from here. Improved quests, battlegrounds, dynamic weather system, housing, hero classes and who knows what else they are keeping secret.

GOTY 2005

What Ferrio said. Lots of little latency bugs, instance bugs and almost every class has one or two very annoyingly broken abilities.

I retain the same opinion. Fucking excellent game design, but wait a few months. Let them iron it all out, slap in Battle Grounds (hopefully) and it'll be solid gold.

As for it getting old...eh, not so much in my opinion.

Lots of little rewards spread throughout the game much like FFXI was for me as well.

I find quests mostly geared to filling out maps and exploring.

And of course padding your wallet/offering up some decent equipment to start tackling pieces of instances. WoW has some terrific dungeon design.

I do wish there was some side content, that's pretty dissapointing, and a little more story/lore to pad the overall thing, but that's not a big deal.

Class balancing could also use a kick, but for the most part, nothing is absolutely terrible, not even Warrior IMO, but some shit needs to be done. It'd also be nice if they'd splice in more quests for every job, and not just a select few.

My real problems are:
classes aren't perfectly balanced (although it's not nearly as bad as every other MMO I've played)
no real incentive to pvp yet (although I'm glad pvp's there as I'd get bored of pve, and it will be addressed)
high level dungeons require specific classes (I'm thinking of stratholme and scholomance requiring a priest, specifically)

In terms of content, outdoor zones pretty much offer the same types of quests from area to area, but the instances rock.

The biggest problem I see if how fast you progress. This doesn't hurt really anybody but the hard-core (read:powergamers.....me) crowd. PvP better get hella good and fast. I have faith they'll add some worthwhile content through patches and expansions, though. The Christmas additions kick some serious ass and are an absolute blast. Snowball fights! This is exactly the kind of things they need to keep doing to make the game feel fresh.

The graphics don't bother me in the least. I find it more attractive than EQII, despite the much lower poly count.

Classes are very unbalanced at the moment, which is to be expected. I think over time Blizzard will balance things out. It's already the most balanced PvP game I've played yet.

I don't see how people can complain about the quests. They're easy to find, fairly straight forward, and are a nice diversion from the normal MMO grind tedium.

I've already quit EQII, at least for the time being, despite my earlier comments on it. I sincerely hope they keep the game on the right path. I can see myself playing this for a long time to come.

First of all classes shouldn't be perfectly balanced. A Priest shouldn't be able to take a warrior on solo and live. But a priest&warrior versus 2 warriors SHOULD be able to. My point being you shouldn't expect every class to be a soloing machine that can take on any challenge. They should have their actual invididual abilities make them special so they're strengths show in different situations. Like wise some classes should have strengths over others, and weaknesses to others. I can take on a priest/mage a helluva a lot easier than say a shaman/warrior.

wait till you get to the indian jones themed instance, one of the most fun dugeons ever created in a MMORPG hehe.

Haha, the staff scene had me rolling.

Repetitious quest system. That would have to be my #1 complaint. Yeah, they give you XP, but there are pretty much only a handful of quest types and some of them can be extra annoying to complete for purely arbitrary reasons. I rue the day I'm forced to kill another tribe of quillboars!

I don't think you understand what I mean by perfectly balanced. Perfectly balanced means each class does what it's supposed to do and has all of their strengths and weaknesses. Right now I don't think warriors and druids are really fitting their strengths.

there are some bugs.. for instance I'm posting here because the servers are down...

repetition is VERY low in this game.. whoever says it isn't hunts around the world... the real meat of this game is instances and PvP...

instances are anything but repetitious.. whether you are going through the labyrinth of Scarlet Monestary, the winding maze-like caverns of Wailing Caverns, etc... they each hold something very distinct and require entirely different play styles... and PvP.. well, what is more diverse than playing against other living breathing characters.. and the best thing about this game is if you don't want to participate in full on PvP on one of the PvP servers, the normal servers STILL allow for a complete amount of PvP gaming.. you can still do town/city raids (or defense if yours is being raided) and at a high enough level you can still go into enemy outposts and slaughter all of the poor noob quest givers... on a non-PvP server to boot...

this game is THE definitive MMORPG.. they need to get the servers more stable and iron out some of the bugs, after which point it will be hard for any other existing game to stand against them..

just like everything else they do, when blizzard does it, they go all out on it.

I'm really not understanding how World of Warcraft is as tiny as people claim it to be.

I think the game length and progress is tuned just about perfectly.

People who sit on MMO's and grind 20 hours a day really shouldn't get a say in it. :p

1) Loot lag.
2) Login server problems.
3) Those stupid collection quests.
4) Lot's of Bnet kiddies and 'uber' assholes.
5) It's far too addictive.

Bout all I can think of.

Then no, dont even think about it, WoW will hinder all your motivation to find a new job, as soon as you'll start to play this game 8+ hours a day, and trust me, it will happen quite fast when you dont have a job, WoW, or any addictive mmorpg for that matter will become your main focus when you wake up and until you sleep, you wont shower, you'll order from restaurants because cooking yourself just takes too much precious time away from wow.

I've been Handshaking for the past hour...

Blizzard I love your game and all but, Christ, I'm gonna need that hand back.

Some problems I have:

-Probably the worst community I've seen in a mmo. Every mmo has there group of whiners, cheer leaders and elitist morons, but WoW seems to take the cake by far (especially the first two)
-The solo'ing atmosphere makes it harder to have a good group game going. Sure you can get instance groups together but if your not in a clan or have a group of friends it may be tough at times. Also grouping with the people I listed in my first point ruins the experience.
-The fast "let any mainstream gamer get somewhere" system really gives you no gratification... everyone is good at the profession they do. I'd personally rather you have to spend a lot of time to get good at it.
-Bugs can get annoying at times.

"People who sit on MMO's and grind 20 hours a day really shouldn't get a say in it. :p"

I play for about 45min at lunch during the day and between 2-4 hrs a night. I'm level 35 and i've benn to all but a few areas.

repetition is VERY low in this game.. whoever says it isn't hunts around the world... the real meat of this game is instances and PvP...

I don't pvp and i've only seen 3 instance dungeons. One that was really cool, one that was okay, and one that was totally retarded. The instances are fun but inconsistant (sometimes enemies stay dead, sometimes they respawn, sometimes they only respawn when they die), they really should all function the same way. To say that traveling around the world doing quests isn't the 'main' part of the game, well I fail to see how you can avoid doing that and be high enough level to participate in the pvp.

don't see how people can complain about the quests. They're easy to find, fairly straight forward, and are a nice diversion from the normal MMO grind tedium.

I'd argue that killing 15 jungle fighters just to go somewhere else and kill 20 jungle warriors to go somewhere else and kill gnolls, the murlocs, all in the same way. Just so you can get another quest to go kill murlocs until they drop heads, or satyrs for ears, or troll for ears etc, etc, etc... its just level grinding in desguise.

Some negatives: server crashes and lag (loot lag in particular), buggy quests, and I have had the client crash to desktop a couple of times. I have done quite a bit of instances and PvP (which is a blast), but the game is repetitive (especially the quests). The number one problem though is the community. If you get in a good guild or have some friends that can play with you you should be fine, but my experience with pick-up parties (which the design of the game encourages) has been pretty poor.

Personally, I'm debating whether I'll continue playing after my first month is up. It's enjoyable, but I am tempted to wait until Blizzard has squashed more of the bugs and implemented more of the PvP stuff before jumping back into the game. I think PvP is what will ultimately make this game.

I am likely doing this. Wait a few months, come back to a hopefully much cleaned up game, complete with shiny new features.

I'm level 43, and It's getting too slow to level. So now I'm taking advantage of the rested state that you get while not playing. 3/20 of a level is given too you for each day of no play basically.

Someone I know got to level 60 over a week ago. Just insane.

YES! Even tossing out a few heals with your 15 Undead Priest when Sepulcher's being raided, (and being vivisected by a Human Warrior for my trouble), it's smooth, fun, and *mildly* balanced, (FIX WARRIORS! :P).

Dynamic weather and housing? Has Blizzard talked about those two? Also, what is the attraction of dynamic weather? Housing might be interesting, but has Blizzard said how they'll handle it? Will it be anything like UO?

Housing hasn't been discussed at all other than "it's on the table." I think Eno (lead designer) hinted that it will probably be in an expansion pack. As for weather, they said they want to do it right... whatever that means. At one point they were talking about the weather being very dynamic and everchanging.. not just static rain every 4 hours. I'm betting they are holding it back right now due to lag issues and other things that it could potentially cause. Let them get the engine in better shape before introducing something like that.

The AH system in this game pisses me off.

Much preferred FFXI's AH system for the stability of the prices as well as the stability of the stock.

Plus, camping an item on AH without buy out, or with a buyout at ridiculous price is just no fun.

I like it this way, the economy is more freeflowing. Supply and demand take over a lot quicker than it does in FFXI. Ya paying 1.5 for a lesser elixir of defense was fucking outrageous.... but people were willing to pay that cause there were so few at the time. A items worth is only what people are willing to pay for it.... there should be no concrete prices.

Whenever someone is going WTS an item I have. Then they ask "how much" I always reply "How much you want to spend?"

Kinda like how I sold stacks of 5 Gingerbread Cookies for 1.5g at the AH the day the Christmas patch came. :O Ahh yes good times.

:)

One thing the expansion needs is like five times the music. It's beginning to get very repetitive.

The servers are the most inconsistent of any MMORPG i've ever played-- be it in the first real month or not.

It's pretty ridiculous. This isn't the first day that its been down atleast four hours with no real response other than "We're working on it".

No word why, or when it will be fixed. Honestly, I won't pay for this.. After this free month, I'm gone until they smooth this out.

Its seriously THAT bad. Even when they servers are up, 50% of the time you are lagging noticeably. And I'm not just saying that out of frustration. I was through being frustrated 3 hours ago. Now I've just come to terms.

Great game. Too many connection issues.

Gamespot = Pwned. Factor in everything, you dolts.
