So what's the latest word on Bioware's Dragon Age?

It seems like there's hardly any info regarding this Bioware title. Anyone got anything? What kind of game is it? Will it be party-based? Will it be like the BG series?

From what I can gather, Dragon Age looks like BioWare's follow up to NeverWinter Nights without the AD&D settings, D20 system, etc. It seems BioWare want's to move away from developing games based on someone else's property and start developing their own. Thus Dragon Age and Jade Empire.

I expect Dragon Age to be much like NWN. Single and Multiplayer system, heavy online play with improved tools for creating your own adventures. More DM interaction, and improved graphics engine to handle more actions in a 3D environment. (Swimming, flying, etc.)

I guess E3 will mark it's first real public showing as info will begin to trickle out from there.

what I'm really hoping for is:
a competent party system that allows for many teammates (more than 4)
AND/OR
a competent KOTOR style viewpoint

even without these the game will still kick ass

I'm not sure about the KOTOR point of view although you may be able to zoom in close enough to do that.

I do remember reading an interview with one of the Bio Guys who said that the engine for DA would be able to handle massive battles, like the kind in strategy games, with vast armies, which should bring some interesting elements to the game play.

The only reason to use the D&D system for videogames is marketing. The system doesn't really work for realtime simluation combat, and it's always tweaked anyway. They just want to throw D&D on the box.

Without a few custom tweaks the D&D system is flawed for pen/paper play too, but that's another thread.

Agreed, but I'm sure BioWare feels they've built enough of a reputation now that they no longer need the D&D logo on the box. Plus, there is a huge potential for bigger amounts of cash through developing your own properties. Merchendise rights, books, movies, etc.
