So where's Gaborn? (RIP Gaborn)

Jesus Christ...

I never met Gaborn outside of the forum, but he was easily among my favorite GAFers: intelligent, principled, honest.

I feel bad for not being able to say something more substantial... you "know" someone through message board postings, and what do you really know of them? But Gaborn was, I think, one of the few posters I would have wanted to hang out with in real life, had we met under difference circumstances.

Rest in peace, man. This place is far less rich for your absence.
 
To think that I'd just stumble upon this thread like this while just checking out the OT.

He was such a standout guy that everyone recognized here in the OT for his topics. Had no idea that he was so sick too, and if it weren't for someone being genuinely concerned and making a thread, we would have never known.

Even I noticed his lack of posting, that in itself shows how well-known he was around here.

R.I.P. Gaborn, you even went out with a shock thread for yourself.
 
Was sad to hear about this one. The Priapism thread he had going was one of the first things I read on GAF while I was lurking back in the day.

May he rest in peace.
 
Wow. Friend who has an account but lurks mentioned this today. He posted some very screwed up shit but it was interesting screwed up shit. I shall miss seeing his posts without a doubt.
 
Its fitting that Gaborn, the master of depressing threads, would leave us with another depressing thread, and boy its a doozy.

When I first started posting on GAF he and I had a conversation in which we discovered that we had both learned what an adze was from Home Improvement. He didn't have an avatar or tag at the time and I never remember anyone without either of those, but I always remembered him just because we had such a bizarrely specific yet utterly pointless thing in common.

He was a great poster.
I knew not to get into a debate with him when I disagreed with him, because I knew he'd been able to whoop my ass.
 
Kind of chilling that he checked into GAF hours before. Did stump find out what happened?

I remember him being stubborn about Ron Paul and how Obama had failed the gay community...I knew that was a bad way to look at things but I always respected his view on it.
 
This is crazy. I'm shocked and saddened...the death of Gaborn (and scorcho) had a much bigger impact on me than I expected. RIP

Called the number that matches his father twice today, got voicemail. Would rather not leave a rambling message ("something something internet something your kid good kid call me back") so hopefully I can get him on the phone over the next little while. I'll reply when/if I have anything.

Thank you Stump. This news has punched me in the gut. I know this is an internet forum and you're not supposed to get attached to the person behind the text. But Gaborn was special, man. A real part of our strong GAF community, a brethren, a unique poster and person.

A form of closure would certainly help plenty of us.

Gaborn has long held a special place on GAF for me. I respected his passion and intelligence, and regret that I never pursued a more substantial relationship with him. He was easily one of my favorite posters - perhaps my very favorite - and I will truly miss his contributions to the forum and to my life through his posts. He was the sort of person I think more of us should endeavor to be.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends, both here and otherwise. If losing Gaborn is this depressing for all of us, I cannot imagine the emptiness felt by those who knew Kendall.

Rest in peace, you remarkable man.
 
This is pretty sudden and unexpected. A large portion of us didn't know about his illness, maybe he rather have it that way then to make us worry.
 
Fuck; GAF is supposed to be this abstract place where people disappear because of growing up or being banned, not because they pass on. It's weird and sad to think how many other accounts may have gone the same way. Rest in peace, Gaborn.
 
Damn, so young . . . That fucking sucks.

I didn't often agree with Gaborn, and I found his circular logic annoying, but shit, he fielded the other side of several at length discussions I've had on here. Plus, just knowing him as a member of the community, seeing him around all the time, etc. . . Really makes you consider the simultaneous strangeness and coolness of an online community. Never knew him in person, like 99.9% of you, but still shaken to hear this news.
 
Tragic. Him and Scorcho were staples around here for many years. I'd argue with him here and there on politics, but that was also because I knew I'd get a good response back, even if I didn't agree with it.

Would anyone mind posting the cause of death if known? I really don't want to poke around and play internet detective, that seems more creepy and invasive to me than just knowing what happened.

And even though there was a notable amount of "bad news", you could tell that it wasn't posted for the hell of it, that you could see it was posted because he knew there'd be some genuine, perhaps conflicting but honest discussion about it.

I hadn't visited OT on a regular basis for a while (probably a good few months, if not more) and I feel even more down because I missed out on his stuff. And from what I gather, he was quite spirited in PoliGAF, even though (as an Australian) I never ventured into those threads.

I'm glad that while not many who have posted in this thread necessarily contributed in his topics (myself included, to a large extent), his presence definitely touched us all. It's a shame he couldn't have seen this before he left, but I think we all say that before a loved one leaves this mortal coil.
 
You know what feels kind of weird. I had a few replys back and forth with him on a few occasions but I'm probably not known around here so he wild never have known I really existed but I felt I knew about this man. A man I've never met, never seen his picture (until last night) nor never knew his name but I could tell people about this man, the way he championed causes he believed in and would fight for them no matter what, a man who loved to entertain with stories of cute kittens but also educate on the nastier side of humanity. It just seems so weird.

Thanks Lexi and Stump I think it's only right that it was discovered, a member with that stature deserves a goodbye
 
I don't really visit the OT, but when i did, I'd make sure to always check in Gaborn's weird and wonderful threads. I got the feeling he was well respected around here. Thanks man, for making my reading material funny and insightful :D

I just keep hoping he'll post in this thread and make this thread a lie.

I was just talking about him with a buddy of mine about how Gaborn could make this place super depressing. He raised the bar with this one.

You'll be missed, you crazy bastard.
 
I only know what I know about Gaborn from what he posts on this forum.

Outside of his traditionally depressing threads, he was well spoken, and intelligent.

He also brought insight to me about the LGBT community, and actually sparked dialog between me and my sister, who is a lesbian. It actually helped my relationship with her.

I live in an era of the internet, where someone who I've never met in person, is not a "celebrity," or a distant family member, has died, and I have a sense of loss now that he's gone.

Goodbye Gaborn.

Yeah...it was definitely an uphill battle against an intellect like that. =) Guy whooped me a couple times, changed the way I look at and approach certain topics. If you think about it, he's probably influenced hundreds of people.

Though I personally never interacted with him, I came to respect Gaborn's ability to intelligently and rationally argue points in more than a few often-heated discussions on GAF. He was one of the members who set an example of what a good and passionate debater looked like, one who could make their points without descending into petty verbal attacks.

Like many Gaffers, I noticed his lack of presence a few weeks ago, but I thought something else had cropped up in his life that was taking his time. I am sad to hear that he has passed away, but I am happy to see that he touched so many lives with his caring attitude and friendly, intelligent demeanor.

Goodbye, Gaborn, and have a better one. GAF has lost something unique with your passing, but has gained so much with your presence.
 
I'm glad my last memory of him was watching him run circles around transphobes instead of some of the unsavory things he was wont to advocate.

Can't believe he never lived to see full marriage equality for LGBT people. :(
 
when someone posted that topic about the rare whale being seen for the first time, i thought it was a gaborn thread at first

didn't know him but he seemed like a good person.
