RIP. Been on this forum for a long time, it's sad to see people pass away.

If someone could PM me the obit, I'd appreciate it.

Someone made this in the Curiosity "game", app, whatever.

Classy. RIP Gaborn.

Wow that's pretty fucked up. OT will never be the same. Gaborn (among other things) inspired me to create a website where I post weird news since 2009. Do we have details as to what exactly happened? I'm almost 27 myself and can't imagine what his family has to go through...

Gaborn is the reason I start visiting OT a lot. People reaction to his thread are amazing to read. :(

Farewell.

Wow. I never interacted with him on the boards personally, but it wasn't hard to see his presence here in the OT. He was one hell of a GAF member.

Rest in Peace.

Read the first few pages, then skipped ahead and was in a state of disbelief for a few minutes. Very tragic and surreal. I had no idea he had health problems.

RIP. He will truly be missed.

Always knew with a Gaborn thread there would be something interesting. Maybe not in the OP but if not, in the responses, maybe not in the responses but in the backlash. A worthy Gaffer.

I'll miss you, friend. Rest in peace. See you in another life, brother.

Never interacted with him much. Maybe just a reply or two, I ended up lurking or reading most of his threads, so you just expressed perfectly my sentiments.

It's strange to think about browsing GAF without his posts on here. He will surely be missed.

I'd love to see some kind of tribute in the NeoGAF header, even if it's just for 24 hrs or so. Wouldn't have to be much, even if it's just changing "Believe" to "Penetrating Your World" or something.

Or even, so as to not be specific to any one poster, maybe something like "NeoGAF: In mourning".

I just love the sentiment here. But I'm a bit wary of the outcome. Wouldn't want the GAF banner to be permanently at half-mast for example, and we are all going to die sometime, some sooner than others.

And Gaborn's tag would be really appropriate. But it's not going to be all that good for publicity if, say, thundermonkey or smokeydave bite the dust.

Life goes on. Gaborn knew that. Celebrated it even in his own slightly cranky way.

So probably the sensible answer is no. But the sentiment is spot on and supported.

I haven't posted here with any regular in a couple years now, and I was most active years ago as a dumb, selfish teenager with a shitty worldview.

I got in a few arguments with Gaborn when I was still a shitty teenager, and with the benefit of age and being kicked around by life a bit, I still don't agree with him much, but he made me examine my worldview a lot more than I ever admitted to him. Message board arguments about politics, especially with Gaborn and guys like him, taught me critical thinking in a way that formal education didn't.

I never told him that, didn't know he was sick, but frankly I don't think I needed to. He wasn't an idiot. He knew he was smarter than people like me but he took the time to engage anyway, so that's cool.

Excessive display of emotion is vulgar, in my opinion. Let's not do that, please, it's not necessary as we already have this thread.

'Tis sweet and commendable in your nature, Hamlet,
To give these mourning duties to your father;
But, you must know, your father lost a father;
That father lost, lost his; and the survivor bound,
In filial obligation, for some term
To do obsequious sorrow: but to persevere
In obstinate condolement is a course
Of impious stubbornness; 'tis unmanly grief;
It shows a will most incorrect to heaven;
A heart unfortified, a mind impatient;
An understanding simple and unschool'd;
For what we know must be, and is as common
As any the most vulgar thing to sense,
Why should we, in our peevish opposition,
Take it to heart? Fie! 'tis a fault to heaven,
A fault against the dead, a fault to nature.

(William Shakespeare, Hamlet)

I'd hardly agree that something up for a short amount of time to at least acknowledge the passing of two very well known contributors to GAF would be considered "vulgar", but to each their own... it's hardly a point worth arguing, especially in a thread like this. I just would have figured it'd be GAF's way of leaving flowers. Temporary, but leaves a mark on all who witness the gesture.

But I'm in agreeance with phisheep though. If such a gesture were to take place and something happened to another treasured member tomorrow, where would it end? Maybe just placing this thread in the "forum archive" area once everyone's said their piece would be something. At least that way it wouldn't get lost amongst the inevitable thousands of threads to be created in OT over the coming years.

It makes me so sad Gaborn and scorcho won't be here for election day

these are two people very integrated into the political discourse on neoGAF and it just isn't the same without them :(

Gaborn used to message me a lot when I was a mod, about people who were being homophobic or racist or whatever, and we'd frequently have very engaging back and forths about the nature of the political process and what crosses the line and stuff. He always struck me as a genuine dude, even when I didn't agree with him. That just makes me respect him more.

neoGAF, you guys are good people. Stay frosty if you can, GAFers :(

America lost Tim Russert just before the 2008 election, and now GAF loses their own top two political analysts just before the 2012 election. There will be a noticeable void in political discussions around here from now on.

RIP

I did not agree with him most of the time, but he had a huge impact on the OT.
Same. We had different opinions on a few things but he always had something interesting to post about. That made his threads and posts a priority when I browsed and skimmed through Gaf. I always respected the fact that even when debates were heated, he came at the issues in an informative manner rather than resorting to personal attacks.

I'll miss him.

just illustrates how fickle life can be. A true tragedy he was so young, before the issues most important to him were achieved. Hopefully we can all fight a little harder for transgender, homosexual equality and think of Gaborn while we do it.

I just wanted to bump this in light of the historic victories for gay rights that were made last night. Gaborn obviously was no Obama supporter but was deeply focused on this civil rights fight, and I'm sure he would have been celebrating with us if he were still here.

Yeah that's what bummed me out upon seeing this thread just now. Neither Scorcho nor Gaborn lived to see this :/

damn i just saw this thread. gaborn was by far one of my favorite posters. he always posted threads about new animal discoveries and stuff. =(

This is news to me as of a few minutes ago. Holy shit. Not a good couple months for neogaf. RIP man. Will miss the Gaborn threads.

Do we know what happened? Was he sick or was this a freak thing?

He was sick. Apparently, it was something he was born with.

Might try a huge board card type thing depending on how stump's call with the fam goes.

I know it is not the best idea ever, but how was his relation to his dad regarding to gaf ?

Maybe printing his best posts would be a great way for his family to know him more or something

Hope Stump can still reach his father or brother.

To be quite honest, I wouldn't be inclined to push it. Families can take this different ways.

For me, for example, I vanished off Gamefaqs for a while when my son was taken very seriously ill. People got worried and various threads cropped up. I read them but just did not have the mental or emotional energy to respond. But one guy took the initiative to find me out and send me a very simple postcard, just offering best wishes. I have rarely been so touched in my life - brought tears to my eyes, but tears of togetherness, not of sadness.

Best thing about it though was it was a postcard - it didn't demand or require a response, like a telephone call does. At a difficult time I appreciated the thought behind doing that more than anything else. Other best thing is there was only the one - I didn't get inundated with things.

I suspect the same approach might be most appropriate here. Phone calls are spectacularly difficult at a time like this. Emails are if anything worse. A brief letter or postcard, worded to express gratitude and sympathy but not expecting any response is probably best. And only one of them.

I'd leave it to Stumpy to do whatever he feels best.
