So, which state has the best license plates?

Driving on the freeway the other day and I saw probably every custom plate that California has to offer within a 5 mile radius. I think the plain old California one [written in red script] is elegant and simple. The whale's tail/art council are awesome, too. I like the "modernish" font on the "memorial" one, but the flag in the background is incredibly tacky.

Standard:

Arts Council:

This one is awesome because you can get a hand, a heart, a star, or a plus sign on it:
"Have A Heart, Be A Star, Help Our KIDS:"

For some reason the standard script/font reminds me of Cruis'n USA. :lol

EDIT: For the sake of conversation, if you got a custom plate what would you get written on it? When I had a 350Z I contemplated getting RJ's 350 or Zyal8er. :D Cheesy, I know... Now that I have an Avalanche I might just renew the license plate my parents used to have on our family van when I was a kid which was "RodJr"

And Tennessee:

This Mexico plate is pretty cool:

Probably the most awesome custom plate, though:

The new Wyoming one is okay. The old one had Devil's Tower too, but it looked ugly.

Montana has like 80,000 different plates; I see a new one all the time.

Is the horse really beveled/embossed? :lol Without that it probably would have looked fine...

Yeah, that's been the state emblem/logo thing forever, I think every plate has had the bucking bronco on it. I guess it adds to the 'space'...Wyoming plates have very few numbers, the 3 on that one is the county number, so the actual number on the plate is that 46. I've not seen any Wyoming plates with more than 4 numbers. Pretty crappy for custom plates..

Colorado motor vehicle division finds woman's proposed tofu license plate tough to swallow

DENVER (AP) -- One Colorado woman's love for tofu has been judged X-rated by state officials. Kelly Coffman-Lee wanted to tell the world about her fondness for bean curd by picking certain letters for her SUV's license plate. Her suggestion for the plate: "ILVTOFU." But the Division of Motor Vehicles blocked her plan because they thought the combination of letters could be interpreted as profane.

Says Department of Revenue spokesman Mark Couch: "We don't allow 'FU' because some people could read that as street language for sex."

Officials meet periodically to ensure state plates stay free of letters that abbreviate gang slang, drug terms or obscene phrases.

The 38-year-old Coffman-Lee says tofu is a staple of her family's diet because they are vegan and that the DMV misinterpreted her message.

80,000 different plates? According to the scant few numbers on that plate Montana has less than 1,000 registered vehicles.

First reply and it's the right fucking answer. I am impressed.

I live in Ohio, never been to Colorado, and it's still my favorite (Just to show I'm not biased).

It's clean, has a simple, bold color scheme (The silver in the mountains is a nice touch), good typography (The cursive of California absolutely ruins it), and is very iconic of the state. And I just noticed it follows the rule of 3rds. So from a design perspective it is pretty much perfect.

I can see the appeal of the simplicity of California's plate, but I'm definitely not a fan of the font or colors.

This one is great.

Also... I like how European plates look.

edit: look at the plates they give to DUI offenders:

Northwest Territories/Nunavut (they both look the same, evidently, except for province name and an "N" for the Nunavut ones). It's just so cool looking...

As for the US, I did always like the lobster plate... simple, but it is the only US plate with a dead animal on it! :D

Same colors as the Cavs. Hmmm...

Well, it's Wyoming, and it has 4 spaces for letters and numbers per county (the 3 there), and there isn't any county I don't think that has 80,000 people. If wikipedia is to be believed, only one county has over 80,000, and it has 85,000.

I dislike all those plates with designs on, looks cheap to me.

UK solid colour yellow/white plate with black letters is all you need and extremely easy to see.

Why is it that I hate people who drive with Ohio plates?
Could it be the design?

PS- There has got to be more than a dozen states that claim their state is the birthplace of aviation.

We're the opposite and don't like the original Colorado plates so we went with the 10th Mountain Division ones.

One of my favorite plates is from Kansas. Maryland has some good ones too.

Most retarded idea ever. It's became like a badge of honor in my area with some people.

One guy does have a 08 Mustang painted that exact color of orange and matching red stripes. Friends and I have a running bet if we ever see him outside his car to ask which came first the plates or the car.

Actually it's Ohio and North Carolina, I'm guessing you're from the latter from your pissy tone :lol

Plus it's official anyways....

Always loved the simplicity of Michigan's blue.

Google image search wins this round thoroughly.

And always thought Michigan's bicentennial was snazzy.

Okay, so North Carolina is "First in Flight" because that is where the Wright Flyer was actually flown. Ohio is the "Birthplace of Aviation" because that is where the Wright brothers were born.

On topic: California is pretty much awesome, and I also like Arizona's old plates.

But I don't know why.

I don't know if I like the new Utah ones or not. I get that they're going for both the desert theme up top and the skiing on the bottom, but they should have just offered two alternate plates. This would look really nice if it was just the skier.

How about them Jazz Jeff? ;)

No Okur = no win. Deron is a beast, but nobody else can hit a jumper aside from Boozer. I think we could have stolen game 2 with Okur in there, as his size would be enormously helpful. The team isn't playing horribly (except for when D-Will sits), but they are still capable of better. I just wish we were at full strength, this injury plagued season has been so painful.

But I don't know why.

I guess I came up with that conclusion because of the over abundance of Ohio and North Carolina plates here.
