So, why did Final Fantasy: The Spirts Within bomb?

Personally, I think it was because it was so different than the storys of the games and didn't have any really cool magic or whatnot. I think if it had a setting like FFIX it would've done much better. What do you guys think?

Because....it sucked?

It's hard to screw up futuristic, post-apocalyptic sci-fi with top-notch CGI, but they found a way.

Probably because it was generic sci fi that you could tell they just said one day "this looks like it'll bomb, throw final fantasy in with it somehow" I like that movie and even bought the dvd, i'm so fucked up.

Atleast I thought it was good... or did I?

Brain: Aww, you don't wanna know what I think, now look sad and say d'oh.

As a sci-fi movie it wasn't good.
It didn't have Cloud/Sephiroth.
As a movie titled Final Fantasy, it did not deliver to the fans.
As a CG movie, it was overall good, but see above.

All the star power and special effects in the world wouldnt have saved a plot as bad as that one. The movie bombed because it sucked.

It was a shitty movie but that's not why it bombed. Tons of shitty movies do really well at the box office. It bombed probably because it got poor reviews, was not marketed real well and was different from what people expected from a "final Fantasy" movie. The fact that it totally blew ass didn't really help either.

There is a difference. A movie can be shitty and still be entertaining. Sometimes your in the mood for a mindless action flick. Final Fantasy didnt really get anything right. The action sucked, the dialog sucked, the plot sucked, even the music was bad.

I don't think realistic looking human cg characters have the same appeal as cartoony looking human cg characters. Also the fact that despite the hyper-realistic approach to the design of the characters, the characters themselves weren't very realistic in their movement. I can respect the movie for some of it's technical achievements though.

At least they will get it right with the Advent Children movie (hopefully).

What do you think the chances are that Advent Children gets released in the theatres after it hits DVDs?

The same chance that you have of editing that annoying looking post.

Psst (probably 0)

I thought the technology behind the movie was interesting, but it really didn't do anything worthwhile with it. It could have just as easily been done with live actors... The actual movie itself not being particularly good didn't help either.

My yes! Ah!

The failure was nothing to do with "not being like Final Fantasy". The failure was due to the story being completely hollow and unsatisfying.

I did my part. :(

16 bucks spent, took a friend along with me...let's just say she never let me choose what movie we were gonna see again.

It really sucked for me, what with the theater being 2 hours away.

I could have beaten the first game in the time it took to drive there, watch the movie, then drive home. LAME

If they had released something along the lines of Advent Children I garuntee it would have made atlesat 75-100 million domestically, and double that in overseas markets. The problem was, that people wanted to see a Final Fantasy movie, not some SCI-FI Channel saturday night movie presented with CGI visuals.

I'd like to buy a vowel. "E" !!!!!!!!! :lol

I thought that movie started awesome.

then it wanked on about some earth spirit and just sucked. some bits were cool though.

0. Uwe Boll was the Best Boy Grip
1. very un-American plot
2. why call it FF if it has nothing to do with the games
3. the CG was rough (biomechanics were off, people looked wrong, tech not really much better in Animatrix --> stripping CG = not boner)
4. They ran out of funding

This movie was utter trash. The only thing it had were the CGI and Steve Buscemi :D. The only thing that kept me in the theater was that I hoped that Cloud would appear somewhere...

It was a boring, uneventful sci-fi that wasn't original or well written. The hook was the CGI which didn't matter since there was no attention towards it. I went in a week after the premiere and there were three other people in the theater, which can hold about 200 people.

It was a 3/10 at best. They could have an A celeb cast and a cool punchline here and there and it wouldn't have saved it. Chalk it up as another Pluto Nash.

It sucked, just like the stories in FF games. The only difference is that there was no archaic turn-based gameplay to distract you from the plot. :)

The real reason?

I'm not so sure of that. It would have to be really, really good to make that kind of money, no matter what. The Final Fantasy fan base alone would not push it close to 100 million in the US.

It was a technical marvel, but the story wasn't anything special. I think they could have pulled in repeated viewings by having more references to the game than just Cid and a 'mysterious life force.' I mean none of the music was from the game and there wasn't even a damn chocobo (well except for the one on the shirt and briefcase).

oh really? that's pretty stupid reason so by your logic the FFs after FFVII suck becuase they don't have Cloud or Sephiroth?

the movie bomb because it wasn't nothing like the game series, no magic, no cool villian, no great characters and the plot was boring as hell.

Asside from the fact that it was lacking in interest..

The US market just won't accept an animated film not aimed at kids (Only exception to this I know of was the South park movie)

Put me in the "story/theme was total ass" crowd. Not only was the plot lame and cliched as could be but the newagey gaia spirit shit was laughable. They couldn't make a scifi movie without jamming it full of hippy crap in an attempt to make it apeal beyond the usual scifi/gaming genre fans so in the end it didn't appeal to anyone.

Shame, because I thought the visuals were great and a few of the scenes hinted at potential. But having mindless ghosts as the ongoing threat was just a dumb idea. Imagine those cool soldiers fighting demons or flesh and blood monster or other armored up humans - that would have been so much better.

It had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it was lacking any "Final Fantasy". It could have been an entire adaptation of <insert favourite FF(number/roman numeral/roman numeral + number) game storyline> and it still would have sucked ass. The writing was shit, pure and simple.

It couldn't have bombed because it was shit :) In order for an audience to know its shit they have to see it first or trust the reviewers and there have been many many movies which have done well despite negative reviews and some that have tanked despite glowing reviews.

The movie bombed because of the marketing and the genre. The marketing for the movie was very poor (and Serenity may very well bomb for the exact same reason). The marketing period was actually short and not sustained. Not sure why they would spend so much money on the movie and yet not market it accordingly. Next up the genre (mature animated film) just has never done swimingly well at the box office.

bad press
bad word of mouth
bad idea

this movie was so bad, that even video game geeks were embarrased to go to the theaters :)

This line of logic seems to work for a surprising amount of people. Other than that, the movie was still pretty flawed, since it seems that Square tried to marry Aliens and New Age logic into one movie and failed at doing so

havent read the thread yet but:

Q: "So, why did Final Fantasy: The Spirts Within bomb?"

A: Because it fucking sucked.

Well, to be fair the theme is lifted straight from the games. "Life energy" and whatnot.

On top of everything it alienated it's fanbase. I mean really, if you were to watch the movie without being told what game it was loosely based on, and at the end you had to guess, chances are you wouldn't pick Final Fantasy.
