SOCOM:FTB on PSP is amazing.

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I'm playing it online right now. I'm stunned. Looks pretty good and somehow they managed to make the controls very useable with a complex shooter! Seriously, this fell off my radar based on the fact it was a portable shooter (on PSP no less) and some bad impressions of the beta from a few parties.

Good god, it's great. Easy to get on, no lag, friend and clan options!!! I'm in a bit of awe. Plus I'm talking to everyone as we play. I never expected something so....complete. I expected these handhelds to go online, but in a very limited manner like the sports titles or Mario Kart. This is a whole different level of accomplishment.

Despite the obvious graphics upgrades we've seen this feels like the nebulous "next gen" of handheld gaming to me. Definitely one of the most innovative gaming experiences I've had this year. Anyhow, I know it won't be popular here because it's on PSP and it doesn't make you feel like your sharing in an abstract experience of being Japanese, but it's damn impressive all the same. Bravo, Sony.

About 400 or 500 on the PSP server. It's interesting because you pop through the main servers to get there. There were just over 20000 playing socom in general.

How are you "talking to everyone" as you play? Do you have a headset?

The headset is sold separately by Sony. Only $20. Nice little travel headset though. Voice and sound are great. It was a surprise by Sony that they launched with voice (sort of) so most gamestores knew nothing about it.

Like a phone headset that slips over each ear and a small but effective mic.

Sounds damn cool. Not a big fan of these types of online shooters, but I recognize the series as quality. I'm glad it seems to have worked out so well, even if it flew in a little under the radar.

They're seeing it wrong because you play on the "SOCOM" server. There's now 30000 online (!!!) but only about 450 on PSP.
So that includes SOCOM 1-3 and SOCOM PSP?

honestly, that's a good question. 30k a night is fairly typical for the latest socom, I don't know how many play the old ones or if it's the same server as well.

I was surprised so many people had the mic. Most of them actually in two games. I had to go to several stores (won't play SOCOM without headset :lol ). It's mostly everyone saying, "I can't believe we're playing this on a handheld."

yeah, socom PSP actually does the series justice on the PSP. the auto-targetting might piss some socom players off, but they still got the socom feel down. anyone got a pic of the *real* headset? i'd wish we could just use our cellphone headsets or whatever instead of buying a seperate PSP one

Hell, I can't believe your playing SOCOM online with voicechat on a handheld!

Musashi, I've also got FTB--if you'd like to play sometime add me as a friend (handle: druie). :)

I'm still looking for a mic, though. None of the stores in town have it and none of them could tell me when they anticipated on getting it in. So, I think I'm going to have to resort to purchasing it online. For the time being, though, I'm just playing Free for All (staying away from the team-based stuff :P).

Edit - I'd also like to see a picture of the headset too please! :D

guys, my camera isn't at home so I can't capture the headset. Not that exciting, but I don't feel ripped off for getting it. Feel free to add me to your friends list.....MusashiWins

Unfortunately, you have to be online for it to work. I am right now for another minute if you want to send an invite.

Weird thing...I just realized that this account is linked to my GAF/SOCOM3 account, though it doesn't show me in the clan. There was that original message from WasibiKing in messages, though.

btw...EBGames seems to have the headsets, but not GameStop. At least today.

This at dead time at work and in bed is crack city. So much fun.

Another thing...the headset plugs into the remote which plugs into the PSP. I had never used the remote, I was in a mad scramble to find it.

Does this mean we could use other headsets? (Like PC headsets)

Does the Microphone happen to come off? Does it work like headphones for everything else? I'm just asking because it still sounds like those pics that were floating around before and those looked just like my Sony Headphones I currently use. If they worked the same then that saves me having to tag along two sets of headphones.

i wonder if you could use the live headset?? its just an audio jack, i believe the same size as the headphones

nevermind the live headset plug is too small

Ponn01 - I would bet that the headsets are similar to the pics (if not the same as the pic) and you will be able to use the headset as stereo speakers, but you will not be able to remove the mic.

Sounds awesome - I have choose this or Mario Kart
due to my limited budget at the moment

I vote Mario Kart. SOCOM clearly has better online support... but shit man, we're talking about the BEST MARIO KART GAME EVERY RELEASED.

What if you were never a big fan of Mario Kart? I know it's hard to believe but everyone doesn't jizz over the series.

I'd rather play this. But I'm sure GAF overwhelmingly votes 4 people online. That's ok, for some reason several people on another board I post at got this as well.

I don't know what to tell you?

I'm not going to talk you out of buying SOCOM... all I'm saying is that I've had Mario Kart for 5 days now and have drained my DS battery almost once a day. Its affecting my work output.

God damn, I know I'll sound like a lame ass; but I fuckin' hate aiming with a game controller, so this version of Socom sounds like a Big Win© Target Corp. for me. :P

Not that I've been making much time to game lately, but maybe when I get a PSP. . .

yeah I have to beta and the only problem I had was the lack of headset support.

I'm getting the full version for sure. Loved every bit of it and yeah the graphics are a bit of a downgrade but like Musashi said, it's lag free and the controls are rather good considering the lack of a 2nd analog stick and the R2, L2 buttons.

The control balancing they did, and how they worked out shot accuracy is frankly amazing given the set up of the psp. It really, really nails socom if you're a fan. If you're not, it's still quite an experience to see this on handheld.

Musashi Wins! - you're in Japan, right? That means there's hope for me having a lag-free experience from Singapore with my bro' in Michigan and my bro' in Japan? Tight.

I'm in Michigan ironically.

The cover of SOCOM for PSP looks like a parody to me. I mean, I hate military games, and if I wanted to make an imaginary cover to a game showing exactly why I think the entire genre is boring, self-parodic, and creatively bankrupt, my poor Photoshop creation would probably look something like this:

I mean, Jesus Christ, I haven't seen someone that cock-hungry since Lara Croft:
